Reading is in Berks County. Don't know about Highspire but Steelton had another name earlier, Baldwin (I think). -----Original Message----- From: Lakeanatink@aol.com <Lakeanatink@aol.com> To: PADAUPHI-L@rootsweb.com <PADAUPHI-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, February 20, 2001 6:53 PM Subject: [PADAUPHI] HIGHSPIRE/STEELTON >Is Highspire considered part of Dauphin County? For Dauphin county it is Harrisburg; but a marriage in 1821 must usually be found in church records not in a courthouse. -----Original Message----- From: milton krug <mmkrug@cin.net> To: PADAUPHI-L@rootsweb.com <PADAUPHI-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, February 20, 2001 10:41 PM Subject: [PADAUPHI] Krug, Orth >Searching for a marriage licence for George Krug and Mary Orth. Steelton was founded around 1866. Originally it was named Baldwin. In1870 it was named Steelton.
Searching for a marriage licence for George Krug and Mary Orth. I don't have a marrage date on them but their first child, Sarah was born may 19, 1821. I beleive they met in Dauphin co. I don't know where the county seat is, as I am from Illinois. I need some one to go to the courthouse and see if there is a marrage licence for these two. I'm thinking that they should have been married close to when their first child was born. thanks
Is Highspire considered part of Dauphin County? Could it have had another name in the 1850. How about Steelton? Also wondering what county Reading PA was in during the early 1900's -1930?Brenda

My Uncle Carson lived with his wife, Maude, in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He was a retired Colonel, US Air Force, and I remember he was a Security Officer at the Olstead Air Force Base. Uncle Carson and Aunt Maude had a daughter, Mary Jane. I know that Uncle Carson was very active in the Red Cross as a volunteer, and appeared in the local newspapers being honored for his service to the Red Cross. Uncle Carson took my father, Kenneth Stover, into his home and raised him as a natural son; when my Grandfather, Clinton Jacob Stover left his wife and abandoning my father as well. When my father died in 1977, Uncle Carson and Aunt Maude passed away within a few weeks as well. This is all I can remember about my uncle Carson Stover and Aunt Maude (maiden name Hoaster). I would really appreciate it if anyone who knew or remembers, or has any further information regarding these Stovers, please let me know. Aloha and Mahalo (thank you). Kenneth Clinton Stover, Jr.
Thank you, I'm looking for Minerva L WINDLE born 1872 died Sept. 15, 1966, last residence 17070 New Cumberland Pa, if you know which cemetery is the closest to this address, please let me know.
As to weavers in the 18th and early 19th century. My ancestor John Anderson is named in A History of Franklin County (PA). It states that he was a weaver by trade who came from Ireland in the early days and settled in this county. What I also found interesting was that at least one male in each succeeding generation was a tailor or saddlemaker and even my father worked in retail selling men's suits and knew good fabric. Just for clarity - New Cumberland is actually its own borough, and is not within the jurisdiction of Lower Allen Twp, although it is geographically within Lower Allen Twp as Karl said. (Hi Karl!) Also, there was once a cemetery in downtown New Cumberland, somewhere between 4th and 6th Sts. along Market St. No one seems to know exactly what happened or when (I asked at the borough bldg), but there are buildings on the site. I assume the remains were moved to Mt. Olivet (just south of town), but have no confirmation of it. Does anyone know? This cemetery is shown on a map inside Gilbert Beckley's book on New Cumberland's history. Who wove the cloth? In Ohio it was made from flax and wool. The flax was converted to linen thread on the little wheel. Carded sheep's wool was fed to the big wheel and came out thread. Every home had a big wheel and a little wheel sitting in the corner. One loom served several families. The common cloth was linsey or linsey-woolsey, the chain being linen and filling woolen. In some cantons of Switzerland, Baseland for example, weaving was the main occupation. Not farming. Grapes and wine making was also important. The men were skilled weavers of silk ribbon. Were men important as weavers of cloth in Alsace and in Lancaster and its children counties? Were any of them Matter men? We have two and maybe three weavers in Cumberland County about 1830-1860 and probably before 1800 - Mater men. Henry and Michael. What did the Matter men of Lancaster County do beside farm. Most every family had enough of a garden to their family and a milk cow and a horse but the women and young children did most of that work. Larger farms required the full attention of the adult men - but in some families the men were money-lenders, blacksmiths, carpenters maybe weavers, wagoneers, harness makers, stone masons and toward 1800 they may have worked on building or operating the canals. Did anyone brew beer, raise grapes and apples for supplying other than themselves? If so they probably didn't have a large farm. How do the Matter families fit in? Did they all have large farms which they passed on to their sons? Or were some of them tradesmen?

New Cumberland is in Lower Allen Twp., Cumberland County.. Harrisburg is on the East side of the Susquehanna River and is part of Dauphin County. There are no cemeteries in New Cumberland, PA that I am aware of. However, just South of town in York County, there is Mt. Olivet Cemetery which is very large. To the North West in Camp Hill (Cumberland County) there are three: Rolling Green Memorial Park (very large) and two smaller church cemeteries. These are used by New Cumberland. Harrisburg (Dauphin Co.) has two Harrisburg and Harrisburg East. There is also a Catholic Cemetery - Cathedral or Mt. Calvary Cemetery. There are a number of others in the area, but these are further away. Dauphin Co. has 228 cemeteries that I am aware of. Would anyone have a list of cemeteries in Cumberland (Harrisburg) thank you.
Hello, I am seeking information on, and ancestors of my g-grandparents Mary ZIMMERMAN married to Luther GRACE circa 1860/70s. This could have been her second marriage. They lived in Dayton near Williamstown in Upper Dauphin Co. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jay M. Osman Landisburg, PA ----- Original Message ----- From: Ralph D.
