I think every veteran of any of our wars is entitled to a free headstone, and if to be buried in a National Cemetery there is no charge for the funeral and burial. Try contacting your local US Office of Veteran Affairs. An aunt pinpointed her parents burial lots, and while I found great-grandparents, aunts and uncles, there were no stones for grandparents; just an empty space. Reporting this to my aunt, she said, "I thought so! That cheap brother of hers that inherited the house, the furniture, and everything else therein was too cheap to buy headstones, even though he promised everyone involved that he would!" Not to be dismayed by this story, I looked around the cemetery until I found the stone of another George, photographed that, and placed it in the appropriate place on my genealogy page, finally giving my grandparents a headstone where they had none before. The cemetery involved had no active caretakers and no one to confirm burial locations. In many other instances the caretakers gladly dig up their old files, and provide details of what names are associated with what burial sites. Have a nice day - it looks great for shooting headstones, which I intend to do this fine morning. Regards, with regrets to Netscape6 users (what a mess!) You can take your photos to any photograhy shop and have that done. I had negatives done from tin type and they set the negative on a floppy disc. It only costs from $5 to $10 depending where you go. RhodaJ
Hi Andrea, I will go back and look again, but, yes, as in every cemetery, there is too much blank space. That is, too much grassy area between stones. I get really intringued by that! I want to know who is buried where there are no stones. I'll look some more, but, if you find a way to know if no one ever ordered gravestones, could you please let me know. I will look for Dellinger and Shields, and get back to you. I don't recall seeing them however. Thanks, Judy --- ANDREA CAIRO <ACAIRO@webtv.net> wrote: > Sorry it took so long to answer, I was away for the > weekend. I take mine to a photo lab that DOES NOT send them out. The photo is reproduced with negative it is done right on the premise. Even the tin types. Very reasonable priced, under $10. Shirley
Hello List, I had a web address for a company to which you could send an old photo (even a tintype) and they would make you a copy plus produce a negative. I can't find the web address. Does anyone have any such address? Thanks Karen
Could someone tell me how I might find out the parents of Margaret Burgert/Burgett, who was born May 27, 1841. She died Dec. 3, 1900. SHe married George W. Hoover. Is there any Dauphin County Historcial Society that could search their records for me? Anyone else have any other ideas? Sorry it took so long to answer, I was away for the weekend. I don't know what to do other than ask the office if they have any idea if there were any stones there, is it just a empty space? Thank you for all the help, I was hoping there would be something there, the cemetery worker did give me two other names that are buried near the COFFINS Dellinger and Shields.

I recently ask the list if anyone knew how Mohn Street in Steelton received its name. Someone thought possibly because there was family in Steelton by the name of Mohn. The reason why I had posted that question was I had seen on another web site someone saying they were "dying for good Muhn strudel". I have never heard of Muhn strudel before and the name of Mohn Street in Steelton immediately came to my mind. That is where my family, who were of German descent had lived years ago. I know this isn't a genealogy question, but has anyone ever heard of Muhn strudel? Joyce
Hi Bob Long shot here. Do any of these SHEETZ folks look familiar to you? I am trying to find out where my GGrandfather, David SHAFFNER, born abt 1814 in Harrisburg PA, was before the first documented record I have of him, when he married Elizabeth SHAFFER, (no n) in Preble Co OH in 1851. There were lots of SHEETZ and DUEY in Preble Co at that time. I got the divorce info, by accident, by doing a search on "david shaffner" on Google search engine at: http://www.google.com/ This came up, among others, in Cumberland Co PA Divorce Records at: http://dueyhistory.org/ged/d0000/g0000058.html#627 [626] Cumberland Co., Divorces 1789-1860, by Eugene F. Throop. Jan. 1849: On 7 Dec 1843, David Shaffner & Elizabeth Duey, married until 14 Aug 1844, "She refused to perfrom any of the duties of a wife for & towards the petitioner." (Eleanor Duey, who read and transcribed notes in shorthand from the proceedings, mentioned that the language at times was rough and showed that Elizabeth did not care for her new husband, was in fact defiant.) David Shaffner (1844) lived in the house of Joshua Elders, with Frederick Duey (his father-in-law). Shaffer was moving to his brother-kin-law's, Jacob Sheetz. (There is a Sheetz connection with Dueys: John Simon Duey (J. Conrad's son m. Ann Cath. Sheetz, who gave birth to Elizabeth's father Frederick). In the notes on David, which see, David moved into a house where his father-in-law Frederick was living, but planned to move on to the house of his brother-in-law Jacob Sheetz. Divorce finalized 13 Feb. 1849. [627] [S45] Divorces, Cumb.
