Hello Fellow Listers: Just letting you know that The Perry Historians / Harry Lenig Library will be holding their annual Genealogical Workshop on Saturday, March 13th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. This is FREE and there is no need to preregister - just come that day with a notebook and a good pencil or two. Harry Focht, our "main man" and long-time genealogist will speak on research at the Court Houses and the treasure trove that can be found there of valuable information in the morning. We will then break for lunch - on your own. Continuing with research in our library. If you are interested and planning on attending I would like to know an approximate count as Harry will have "handouts" and I need to make sure there are enough made to be presented. For more info .......... contact me Donna Heller Zinn [email protected]

There is a transcription of the St David's records at the State Library in Harrisburg and at the Evangelical and Reformed Library at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster. However, if there were records for the bulk of the time period you mentioned (1790-1820), I have yet to find them. My Ludwig Bretz is said to have died in 1807 and been buried at the church but there are no records to substantiate that other than a published family history. So if anyone has found records for that time period, I too would be interested. Does anyone know of any church records for the Zion or Powell's Valley United Methodist Church in Halifax Township? Or any history on how old the church/congregation is? Thanks, Marcia Fronk

Bob, she tells me to say hello to you, remembering you from school - she was the school nurse. The ladies (Cassie Wright, President - 939-6806) have been working on this history project for a while, and have the support of Jennie's son, a history teacher from the Steel-High school. He's done much, I understand, in documenting the area's history. I spent the past two days searching for a listing of all of Highspire's Postmasters, and finally found it just after talking with Jennie. Jeremiah KIRK is recorded as taking charge Dec. 2, 1829. He was followed by a long list of Lower Swatara residents: Alleman, Garman, Stoners (Henry, Milton, and U.S.), Ruth and Parthemore, just to name a few. The Highspire Historical Society is being assisted by the state somehow, and I would imagine there is a lot of Lower Swatara Township history in their files. I plan on attending their next meeting. Just missed last night's, and this morning's meeting was called off due to threatening weather. -- Regards, CHARLES EARL FIES -- Fies Family Fotos <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/> FIES/FEES Family History Research Site <http://www.fies-fees.org> BABB - HARTMAN <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/Babbs.html> DAUPHIN CO. Can anyone give me information on the White House Tavern, on White House Lane at the Susquehanna River and on the property of R. Niebling? On February 28, 1851 Mahala NEIBLING RITTERSPACH petitioned the Dauphin County Court for a license to operate the tavern. On October 16, 1852 Mahala died and is buried in the Stoner Farm graveyard. So how old is the White House? Who owned it before R. Neibling? Anyone with history of Lower Swatara Township is welcome to contribute to our growing data file. A publication is in the making, and due credit will be given to submitters of Lower Swatara information. Since Highspire is surrounded by Lower Swatara, shouldn't that also be included? The interests are intertwined, such as Henry STONER from the STONER Farm being one of Highspire's Postmasters. -- Regards, CHARLES EARL FIES -- Fies Family Fotos <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/> FIES/FEES Family History Research Site <http://www.fies-fees.org> BABB - HARTMAN <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/Babbs.html> DAUPHIN CO. Bob & Frank, et al: Charlie Selcher's remarks about the really old graveyards in Lower Swatara Township prompted me to check Egle's "Notes and Queries" on the Gayman and Greiner farms. I put up a new web page showing burials as early at 1783 that were recorded by E. W. S. Parthemore back in the late 1800s. You may be interested in viewing them at: <http://home.att.net/~charliefies/ShopeFarm.html> Now I need to polish the page up by double-checking my typing, and maybe getting photos, if at all possible. -- Regards, CHARLES EARL FIES -- Fies Family Fotos <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/> FIES/FEES Family History Research Site <http://www.fies-fees.org> BABB - HARTMAN <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/Babbs.html> DAUPHIN CO. Books, Corporal April 18, 1861; transferred to 191st Regt., P.V., May 31, 1864; veteran Pg. 233 - Middletown Volunteers in the One Hundred and Ninety-First Regiment John D. Books, Corporal, Co. F, May 31st, 1864; captured, mustered out with company, June 28, 1865; veteran Pg. 204 - Middletown Volunteers in the Ninth Cavalry Jacob R. Books, Private., Co. C., Oct 11, 1861; 3 years; killed accidentally at Louisville, Ky., September 9, 1862. The above listings are the only information on the Books in the C of M. Doris Menear Dougherty's notes on 1-20-2001 indicate Cyrus & Jacob were brothers.
