All I know about the family is that a GRUNDON family lived a couple of houses up Burd Street from me in Royalton. I'm passing your e-mail along to Nancy UPDEGRAFF for her information. I was taking a chance on the spelling variance, since so much of it took place years back. For instance, a FIES ancestor of mine had his last name spelled four different ways on the SAME WILL transcription back in the early 1800s. Again, thanks for the quick response. -- Regards, CHARLES EARL FIES -- Fies Family Fotos <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/> FIES/FEES Family History Research Site <http://www.fies-fees.org> BABB - HARTMAN <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/Babbs.html> DAUPHIN CO. Can someone please tell me what Neidigs Cemetery might be called today. The death certificate for Abraham Landis says he was buried in Neidigs Cemetery, Upper Swatara, Dauphin Co. Is this the cemetery in Oberlin? Thank you. Beverly Walmer Wyld
Karl Fox, I asked my shopkeeper about a cemetery on the farm property (Aaron Hoffer farm) where the gift shop is located and was told there is none. Sorry. (snip, snip) Updated old & new Hummelstown cemeteries, including a few photos, have been been installed at: <http://home.att.net/~charliefies/HummZions.html> I noted several discrepancies, such as a guy being 107 years and died about 20 years after Egle recorded the last transcriptions. Also Anna Stoner's dates on her headstone don't agree with the listings (which only mentioned one Anna Stoner). I'll pursue verification when I get a round tuit. I didn't locate the SINGER Tombstones, since it was a large territory to cover, and most of the old tombstones were illegible. Since I couldn't find any details, I decided to dig them up myself. You can see the results and locate your ancestors by going to my uncompleted web page at: <http://home.att.net/~charliefies/HummZions.html> This page is lacking completion with photos and the like, and hasn't been proofed by anyone yet. List, I found my gr grandmother in this directory and she had died that year 1930 it had her death date in the info. And everyone in the household which included my grandfather and his brother and children at home at this time. it was very helpful to me http://distantcousin.com/Directories/PA/Harrisburg/1930/ The Harrisburg city directory consists of about 600 pages each with about 100 city residents and workers (who live in nearby towns) providing information including spouses names, job / profession, sometimes place of employment, and address of residence. Please do check variant spellings as with this particular work there are many different spellings of names which sound alike or similar. Nadine

Since you didn't provide time frames, I can only guess these are the graves you are looking for. Incidentally, the HUMMELSTOWN CEMETERY is not directly related to the ZION EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, and is several blocks distant from that graveyard. Copied directly from Dr. Wm. H. Egle's "Notes and Queries" are the following entries for the ZION EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN graveyard: BEINHAUER, Christina, wf. P., b. July 30, 1752; d. Mar 26, 1826. BEINHAUER, Peter b. Feb 22, 1744; d. Dec 4, 1818. .... HUMMEL, Eliz., d. F. b. Sep 23, 1807; d. Mar. 24, 1836. HUMMEL, John, b. Sept. 11, 1774; d. Ap. 8, 1832. These may (or may not) be the ancestors in Hummelstown you are looking for. Since nearly every HUMMELSTOWN CEMETERY page I reached by searching the web only listed partial names and inscriptions, I can't say if there are other Beinhauer or Hummel internments matching your brief references there. -- Regards, CHARLES EARL FIES -- Fies Family Fotos <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/> FIES/FEES Family History Research Site <http://www.fies-fees.org> BABB - HARTMAN <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/Babbs.html> DAUPHIN CO. My apologies, with explanation: Frequently women are listed by maiden name, and sometimes 'husband of'. To make the listing of thousands of names useful and meaningful, I sort alphabetically by Last name given. This separated Elizabeth from Norman, but I put her back in her rightful place (where she always anyhow, regardless of what my database said!) I also left her in the "W" listing, and notice she is in the same row of, most likely, her mother, father and grandparents. Also Witmer siblings pop up on the "W" page. This provides TWO pieces of information: natural family and married family. Sound OK? I've delayed responding waiting for a nice day to confirm my listings with photographs, but the weather isn't cooperating. In this dreary atmosphere, the headstones are almost illegible to my camera. -- Regards, CHARLES EARL FIES -- Fies Family Fotos <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/> FIES/FEES Family History Research Site <http://www.fies-fees.org> BABB - HARTMAN <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/Babbs.html> DAUPHIN CO. Hi Charles, I was wondering if Hummelstown Cemetary was known by any other name. I was looking at your web pages for Dauphin Co. Cemetary's and didn't see it listed. I have finally connected my John D. Singer from Ashland, OH to his parents in Hummelstown, namely Johann Nicholas and Elizabeth Barbara Hummell. They are supposed to be buried in Hummelstown Cemetary. John's wife, Catharine Beinhauer's grandparents, Peter Beinhauer and wife Christina Weber Beinhauer are also supposed to be there. Thanks for any leads you may be able to send. Myrna Singer Casey
Re your request for information about your Lykens-born ancestors, at the moment I can only offer what is in the single copy of the 1879 Lykens Register newspaper that I have, but I will try to harvest all news that may be of genealogical relevance. I will gradually post to this list everything I find. There are only four pages, though, and only some of two of those pages has local news. Lynne

My father, Charles Hartman Penrose, was born in Lykens on August 1, 1879 to William Howard PENROSE and Mary Jane MILLER. William was born in Millersburg on August 31, 1856 and Mary Jane was born in Lykens on Nov. 1, 1859. William's father was Charles Hartman PENROSE, who was a shoemaker/dealer in Millersburg. Mary Jane's parents were William Miller and Caroline Coleman. I believe William Miller was a Hardware dealer in the area. Any information that you can provide would be gratefully received. Has anyone come across any information on families that were tenant farmers in the 1830's and 40's? I am looking for information on how the farmers agreements would be made with the land owners, whether they were verbal or written. When looking for a Frederick FRANK in the Middle Paxton tax records, Frederick is listed as a tenant from 1834 to 1837 on the property of John GARMAN est. In 1837 the land is sold to William ETERLINE. From about 1837 to about 1839 Frederick occupies the property of Daniel HAIN and by 1840 occupies the property of John KLIPPLE. I would like to have a better understanding of what it meant to be a tenant farmer. My thoughts are that you may just be helping with the land owners farm work, but then I think you would be considered hired labor. I could also see a land owner who is not farming the land himself would keep the land under cultivation by renting it out. As a tenant listed on the tax records, Frederick Frank owns at least two horses and three cattle. He later moves to Perry county, continuing to be listed as tenant farmer. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Marcia Fronk

Colebrook Furnace was in Lebanon County, built in 1791 by Robert Coleman. Coleman had made a fortune from Revolutionary War profits from his leased Elizabeth Furnace and bought Speedwell Forge, a portion of Cornwall Iron Furnace and the lower and upper Hopewell Forges. In 1791 he built Colebrook Furnace. Several years later he expanded his acquisitions by buying Elizabeth Furnace and most of the Grubb Family shares of Cornwall and Hopewell Furnaces, most of the Cornwall Iron Banks, and all of Mount Hope Furnace, becoming Pennsylvania's first millionaire. This is from the PHMC site: http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/ppet/cornwall/page4.asp?secid=31 The village of Colebrook is not far from the site of the furnace, which was on the Conewago Creek. The village is located on Route 117, southeast of Hershey and southwest of the village of Cornwall. Beautiful area! Full of history. This was probably then part of Dauphin County, as the birth record you refer to is dated prior to the formation of Lebanon County. I'm not sure which part was Dauphin and which part was Lancaster, as Lebanon was formed from parts of both. George F.
