    1. Re: [PADAUPHI] Remains of the Mumma Family Re-interred at Shope's Meeting House
    2. Joan Bretz
    3. About 1958 the old Shoops Church (a union Lutheran church) and its graveyard were eliminated to make room for the cloverleaf off I83 at Colonial Park - near the Colonial Park Mall for those familiar with Harrisburg. At that time, "they" opened the graves and extracted what might be human remains (very little of substance as you might suspect). The remains were placed into special plastic bags and placed into ten or eleven tombs (probably concrete vaults) and placed underneath a memorial stone across Route 22 in the public Shoops cemetery. There is a list of who was buried there which has been published in the Egle volumes and probably elsewhere (my 3d great grandfather was buried there but we didn't know that in time to shift him). I believe but cannot verify that the stones were buried in the vicinity of the graveyard. At the time of the removal the reformed church had already relocated to a new facility and the evangelical church that had shared Shoops were planning to relocate (that is now St Marks, not too far from the old location). There are some church records of baptisms and church attendance but little else available. There are some pine trees still standing to the right of the ramp leading off I83 which I believe framed the church and there are in fact a handful of stones still standing, I guess because they were behind the church. There is some literature available from St Marks (at least a photo copy) that shows the old church. One of the things I want to do is try to find photos of the old cemetery. Don't know if I will be successful or not. I would be happy to check the list and/or send copies of that and the early church photos is some are interested - by snail mail as they are all on paper. Happy hunting! Joan Bretz ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charles E. 1. First minister of the Brethren in Christ or River Brethren lived in Dauphin County and a description of a meeting held by a descendant
    2. Richard A B
    3. I found some references in early Dauphin County newspapers (107 and 108 years old) that one of the founders and the first minister of the religious sect known as the Brethren in Christ or River Brethren originated from Dauphin County. Apparently his descendant Daniel Engle continued in this faith, and hosted one of the largest meetings of that denomination, which is well described in the second reference below. I'm nor related to the Engles, but thought this might interest some to learn a little of the history of the first minister and of an "old time" gathering : F 13 1897 Middletown Press: Death of Henry M. Engle, residing in E. Donegal Township [Lancaster County], near Marietta in the 78th year of his age. He was married three times and was the father of 21 children and grandchildren. The great grandfather of Mr. E was a Swiss immigrant, Uriah Engle, whose son, Jacob, became one of the founders and the first minister of the religious sect known as the Brethren in Christ or River Brethren. Deceased was a grandson of Jacob Engle. May 30, 1896 Middletown Journal: Annual Love Feast A Large Gathering of the Brethren in Christ At the Farm of Daniel Engle Many Prominent Ministers and Members of the Church Present In Lower Swatara Township, Dauphin County, on the banks of the Swatara Creek, just opposite the Stoverdale campmeeting grounds, is located the farm of Mr. Daniel Engle. It was here that the annual love feast of the Brethren in Christ of the Dauphin-Lebanon District was held this year. An ideal place it is for such a great gathering as met there Thursday, with its broad, deep fruited orchards, huge barns, large and commodious farm house, spacious porches, and pleasant yards, all surrounded by fields of waving wheat, tender plants of corn and oats and fine growing grass, entirely away from the tumults of town or city. On Wednesday evening the people began to gather, and all day Thursday teams were arriving hourly, and each incoming train on the M. & H. R.R. brought many others from a great distance. The services began Thursday morning about 9:00, with Rev. Jacob Kreider, of near Annville, the bishop of the district, presiding. The meeting was held in the barn. Two large floors and the side mows were provided with seats, all of which were filled at times. All day services were held. In the evening the sacrament of the Lord's Supper was administered. Around the two long communion tables were seated about 200 members of the church. The service was a most impressive one and even the spectators appeared to be filled with a deep seated reverence and to realize the solemnity of the occasion, and make it, in every sense of the word, an ideal old fashioned religious love feast. At an early hour Friday morning the brethren began the holding of services and continue until noon. This was said to be one of the most successful and largest attended love feasts ever held in this section. People drove for many miles and the long orchard was filled with teams, and had the weather been more favorable hundreds more would have driven there. Among the ministers present were Rev. Jacob Kredier, Annville; Rev. Heisey, Canada; Rev. John Wolgamuth, Lebanon County, Rev. Samuel Brehm, Dauphin County; Rev. Daniel Wolgamuth, Lancaster County; Rev. Tyson, Montgomery County; Rev. Hostetter, Harrisburg; Rev. Jacob Brubaker, Lancaster County. These meetings are held over the district among the members who have the facilities to entertain the people. At this gathering over 400 people were dined, and over 100 horses fed. It has been 19 years since a love feast was held at Mr. Engle's farm." [The previous meeting at his farm would therefore have been in 1877.] ---Richard

    1. Remains of the Mumma Family Re-interred at Shope's Meeting House
    2. Richard A B
    3. Dear Doug and Charles: I checked back in my extensive newspaper archives on Dauphin County, and found an article in 1897 which indicates that the remains of quite a number of the Mumma family were removed from the old cemetery on the Mumma farm, near Highspire, to the cemetery at Shoop's Church. The article gives the names and tombstone dates for all those reinterred. It indicates all the Mummas reinterred were from John Mumma, who died Aug. 13, 1857 aged 83 years. At the end of the article it indicates "In this cemetery repose the remains of the first Mummas who settled in Pennsylvania," which I take is a reference to the cemetery at Shoop's Church. Maybe someone else can comment on the location of this cemetery today, as I don't even reside in Pennsylvania. Anyone wanting a copy of this send an SASE to me within a month from this date to: Richard A. Bisbee 135 Covell Rd. N.W. Grand Rapids, MI 49504-5932 After a month I'm refiling this in my Archives, so please let me know within a month if you want a copy. Do any of you have anything further on the descendants of Abraham and Barbara (Mumma) Rife? Some of my family married into the Rife family, but I haven't found a very complete listing of Rifes of Dauphin Co., despite the fact they seem to have been at once very well regarded people in the county. Weren't the Mummas originally Mennonite? I have found them quite often in old legal papers of my own family's records back in Dauphin and Lebanon Counties. ---Richard ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charles E. 1. Snyder Query
    2. I'm at a brick wall.   I have been searching for the parents and siblings of my great grandfather George Snyder born June 30, 1823, Married Elizabeth Hoover Aug. 15, 1843 in Harrisburg, PA.   His 1850 household is listed in So. Hanover Twp, Dauphin Co., PA. Elizabeth Hoover dau of Abram and Rebecca Hoover of Lower Paxton Twp., Dauphin Co., PA. I think his father was a George or a John.   The 1880 Census says that both his parents were born in Germany.   At present I am interested in the 1830 & 1840 household of Mary Snider/Snyder of Middletown, Dauphin Co., PA.   She has two sons listed in 1840 of the right age range to fit my George.   However as yet I have not been able to find any info on her.   I've essentially eliminated a George and a John Snyder both of Derry Twp., Dauphin Co. as possible fathers of my George.   So I remain at a brick wall. Will appreciate any suggestions that may aid my research. Bob in MI

    1. Old Union Cemetery at Lykens
    2. We visited the cemeteries at Lykens on Saturday and were amazed at the poor condition. Many stones in the Old Union Cemetery are broken and some lay on the ground. Some of the grass had not been mowed which is a shame on Memorial Day weekend. We've seen a lot of cemeteries that are kept in nice condition and wonder why these cemeteries are so poorly maintained. 3. Hi Marcia, I realize you posted this message quite a while ago, but I was wondering if you might still have the info on the Halifax Public Sale of Newbecker's. I believe this may be the land or be next to the land that my grandparents bought. I believe the name sounds familiar from the census. Thanks for any help. Also, I believe you at one time were researching William Reed who operated and owned a mill in Halifax. I believe the land where the mill was is being sold at public auction on June 3rd (or it is next to the land). It is in Inglenook just north of the Clarks Ferry Bridge. There had been an oil refinery there which is no longer in operation. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Houston" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 30, 2004 7:06 PM Subject: [PADAUPHI] Penn'a. 1. Lower Swatara Former Residents
    2. Charles E. Fies, Retired
    3. Jean: Good to see the nice write-up about the formation of the Lower Swatara Historical Society and the desire to provide a complete history of Lower Swatara Township. I've been invited to the meeting Friday (even though I live in Londonderry Township) because I have already provided a lot of history of the former residents by way of grave-yard headstone transcriptions. One such stone is somewhat fascinating because it states something like ....here lies the Bones of Elizabeth, daughter of.... It's written in German, as that was the language of many of the early settlers of Lower Swatara Township. Some of the web pages I've prepared can be viewed at: <http://home.att.net/~charliefies/ShopeFarm.html>. If there is any way you can let Shelby Class know about these Lower Swatara Township web pages so she can view them before Friday Evening's meeting, it might prove beneficial to all. -- Regards, CHARLES EARL FIES -- Fies Family Fotos <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/> FIES/FEES Family History Research Site <http://www.fies-fees.org> BABB - HARTMAN <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/Babbs.html> DAUPHIN CO.
