    3. Hello Fellow Listers, I'm looking for information on Henrietta (Kelly) Neff, born approximately 1848. She had one daughter, Bertha, born around between 1885 and 1898 (the 1920 has her age at 34 and the 1930 census has her age at 32). Bertha apparently never married. I don't know the first name of Henrietta's husband, but I understand that he work for the railroad. The 1920 and 1930 census has them living in PA in Harrisburg's 4th Ward. I would very much appreciate any information on these folks, no matter how minute you may find it, such as the husband's first name, where they may be buried, etc.anything. Thanks in advance for your help! Todd A. Zeigler Seven Valleys, PA

    1. Ledger entries - LENKER,WEAVER, CREADEY, WEAVER, BUFFINGTON
    2. My mother purchased an old ledger at an auction years ago. It belonged to John Weaver, and the entries begin Nov. 14, 1833. Many upper Dauphin County families' accounts are included. John was apparently a shoemaker early in life, and ran some sort of store later on. I will post the names of the account holders and the names of others mentioned in the accounts...most of those mentioned are children, but some are other adults that may have been hired help, or relatives, etc. They are usually noted with a first and last name whereas the children are noted only by first name. Persons are in the order seen in the ledger, and I use the spelling of the ledger as well. 2. You know, Family Tree Maker has the entire set including annuals on one CD. I bought mine last year from them for $20. Much as I like books, the advantage of the CD is that it is entirely searchable by names. Unlike the books, looking for more general information is more difficult because you have to call up each table of contents separately. I finally printed them out separately so I could look up stuff. 2. Hi All, Both the books & the CD of Egle's Notes & Queries are on eBay right now--they are frequently available there. The CD is considerably cheaper at about $8 right now, but the description for the set of books ($300 right now) gives this information: Egle's NOTES & QUERIES Set of 13 Pennsylvania Genealogy "Notes and Queries: Historical, Biographical and Genealogical Relating Chiefly to Interior Pennsylvania," edited by William Henry Egle, M.D., M.A., copyright 1970 (from the original published 1894-1900), thirteen volumes. This is an impressive, complete set, in pristine condition. According to the Publisher: "Egle s celebrated Notes and Queries is the most important multi-volume work on the genealogy, biography, and history of central Pennsylvania ever published. Included in its nearly 5,000 pages are a vast number of genealogies, family sketches, and biographies, as well as extensive lists of early settlers and soldiers of the various wars, including the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. In addition, the work encompasses an impressive array of genealogical source records--early wills, church records, marriage and death records, tax lists, and lists of early immigrants and frontiersmen." "Notes and Queries was originally published between 1879 and 1895 as a series of newspaper columns in the Harrisburg Daily Telegraph, then carried forward and published in five annual volumes between 1896 and 1900. The columns (and offprints of the columns which appeared in pamphlet form) were reprinted in seven volumes between the years 1894 and 1896; thus, with the five annual volumes for 1896-1900, the complete set of Notes and Queries totals twelve volumes." The thirteenth volume is an index to the Main Families, Persons, Places and Subjects. Published by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., LoC# 70-114834, hard cover, 5.75" by 8.75" by about 0.5" to 1.5" thick, before packing weight 17 lbs. I don't want to be too redundant if you have already had a response. Let me know if you are still interested. By the way, you can get a CD of Egle for about $30. I happen to think that it is an essential resource for folks with central PA connections - this is the place that gave me the name of my 4th great grandmother. Regards, Joan Bretz

    2. George F. Nagle
    3. Egle's complete "Notes and Queries," originally written between 1879 and 1900, were republished in 1970 in thirteen volumes. Lately the entire work is available on CD-Rom for a tenth of what the actual books cost. You can find the CD-ROM at FamilyTreeMaker.com and probably a few other genealogy sites on the web. However I bought a copy on eBay for less than ten dollars. In fact I just checked and there is one up for auction right now. "Notes and Queries" is the collected newspaper columns of Dr. William Henry Egle, who was the Pennsylvania state historian, among many other things. His work is heavily centered around south central Pennsylvania data, people, genealogy, history, etc, but does occasionally range afield into many other counties around the state. He pays a lot of attention to the Pennsylvania Germans, which is nice because many of the collected county histories of his time ignored them in favor of the English/Scots Irish. He also gives limited space to stories and notes about African Americans, which almost none of the other histories from this time period do. Egle's work, it should be noted, has errors. It was a "work in progress," in the form of a regular history column. If he wrote a column with errors, he would simply make corrections in a later column. Also, many of the stories were submitted by fellow historians, usually identified only by initials. The CD-ROM has a complete name index, which is handy, but I would like to see a comprehensive subject index, too. All in all, it is a very useful work, fun to read and browse, and full of thousands of stories that you just don't find in the typical county history. George F.
