Roger Cubs - who runs the Matter list has natly tied John Jacob MATTER into the well known line of Matter's who came over from Alsace in 1851. They have this family in some detail. This John Jacob MATTER is the only one I have seen who came to Cumberland County about 1800. Another interesting, at least to me, is a Diewalt MATTER who along with Philipp Jacob MEDER arrived at Philadelphia on the Janet October 7, 1851. I note that this MATTER line which you and Roger Cubs have described has five Diebolt MATTER men from 1648. I have long wondered if this Diewalt MATTER and maybe Philip Jacob MEDER were not related to the Jacob MATTER, husband of Anna Marie Wendling, as you mentioned. They also arrived in September of 1751. I have made inquiry earlier on the Matter list but no one seems to know what happened to this pair of lonely travelers. Philadelphia, Monday, 7th October 1751 . Present: Joshua Maddox, Esqr. The Foreigners whose Names are underwritten, imported in the Janet, Capt. William Cunningham, from Rotterdam & last from Cowes, were this Day Qualified & subscribed the usual Oaths. By List 99. Whole Freights 220. Strassberger says in Vol 1, page 475, Diewalt MATTER age 20 years. >From Church and Cemetery Records of Cumberland County Historical Society. In records of St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church graveyard Shiremanstown, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, on the line between Hampdon and Lower Allen Township. Dewalt MATER d: August 4, 1821 in the 90th year of his age. A note in record, b: 1731 (he would be 20 years old in 1750) With him are Margaret Mater, d: May 18, 1819 age 77-4-18. (my note born 1742.) Samuel b: August 2, 1808 d: December 31, 1855. Susanna b: April 17, 1805 d: March 18. 1892. It would not surprise me to find a Diebolt MATTER as Dewalt MATER in Cumberland County. He is 20 years older than the Jacob MATTER who died 1812 and is buried in Old Graveyard, Borough of Carlisle, Cumberland County.... could Diebolt be an Uncle - he doesn't show up in the records I have seen.... regards Hal ----- Original Message ----- From: Rhnmdn@cs.com To: zzurlauben@mindspring.com Sent: Sunday, October 13, 2002 2:23 PM Subject: Re: [MATTER/MOTTER] MATTER Cumberland city 1812 Jacob Matter is listed as first child of Jacob Matter and Anna Marie Wendling in Genealogy of the Dill Family, page 361 and 362. Birthdate is given as 12 Jan 1752. May have been christened at Trinity New Holland PA. Married 14 Nov 1780 in Hill Lutheran Church, Quitapahila, Lebanon Co, PA to Elizabeth Wolf. One child, Anna Magdalena, b 14 Aug 1784. No info in Dill book on date of death. This is of interest to me as I am a descendent of Jacob's brother Johannes born 1762 and married to Magdalena Sieg. They are buried at the Hill Church . I am trying to confirm the birth of Johannes but in a recent contact with Trinity New Holland ,they do not have a record for Johannes. Dill book refers to Brian Christenson as source of info on Trinity New Holland. Does anybody have any other documentation.? Martha D Nelson
