Let's not be too hard on people. Remember, we're the folks who will spend hours plodding through a census hoping we are looking in the right place. I agree that a.) capitalizing helps, b) using appropriate subject lines help and c.)posting appropriate material to the site helps. What caused me to respond was I just got a posting titled Re: PACUMBER-D Digest V03 #6 wherein the person posting was just complaining of people doing that. Tony
You are absolutely right, Tony! I caught my oversight myself, just as soon as I saw my message come through on the list this morning! By neglecting to change the Subject heading, I broke my own rule! The fact that I am distracted (out of my mind!) by all I have to do to get ready to move back to Lincoln, NE from the boonies of north central Indiana (at age 73) REALLY is no excuse. I was in a rush and I was careless. But it has been my experience that many list administrators will admonish their members to PLEASE put your surname(s) in the Subject and CAPITALIZING SURNAMES throughout the message is the accepted and most efficient way to go. I apologize to those who are offended by my failure to adhere to my own preaching. It certainly was a lapse! I won't repeat myself, other than to say that long lists of messages headed only with "Roll Call" in the Subject are particularly frustrating ... to me, at least. As for plowing through census returns on a microfilm reader, yes, I too have spent many hours doing that (wearing a cervical collar, which I also have to wear while at my computer, because of a pinched nerve where my cervical spine is collapsing down on itself) -- BECAUSE there is no help for it. It HAS to be done that way. Capitalizing surnames, both in the Subject AND throughout the message is a way we all can help ourselves and each other.
