While I could easily have passed the information up, something was revealed to me in connection with the PAWLING family that prevents that... "Henry Pawling came into the Cumberland Valley in the 1740s when he purchased lands in southern Antrim Township. ... He had come from the rural area near Philadelphia in what is now Montgomery County. After erecting his log home he married Mary Hicks, daughter of a neighbor, Nicholas Hicks. Their first child, a son, was named for the father and their only other child, a daughter, was given the name, Eleanor." The mention of Nicholas HICKS, and child Mary riveted my attention. Can any among us tell me of Henry PAWLING & Mary HICKS, or, perhaps even better, Nicholas HICKS? There seem to be one to three or more Nicholas HICKS out there in the early-mid-1700's, and I want to get to know who they were, who their parents were, etc. Thanks! Vince Summers
Thanks Vince, Did not have the name Mary Hicks as the wife of Henry Pawling of Antrim. Had his two children Henry and Eleanor. Can't help on the Hicks at this point. but daughter Eleanor married Dr Robert Johnston. George Washington dined with this family when in this area during the Whiskey Rebellion 1794. Book B, pg 355. Robert Johnston, Major General, Antrim Twp, w/w 12 Nov 1808, w/p 29 Nov 1808. Wife Eleanor * of my personal estate, also her living in this my dwelling house and * of the income of my plantation and all my negroes. Nephew John Boggs all my library except such German books and novels as my wife may chose, with a Bible, also my pistols and fire arms with my side arms, also the diploma I got of the Cincinata, with the medal and I appoint him to be my representative in the Society of the Cincinata. Eleanor Johnston Corman is to receive 100 Lbs.. Johnston Elliott Jr, son to Eleanor Warden, formerly Elliott, 100 lbs.. Aunt Browns four daughters - $200. Sons of Samuel Findlay, deceased, they being my nephews and to Elizabeth Dunlop, daughter of William Findlay, deceased, and to the sons and daughters of my sister Mary Beatty and the sons and daughters of my brother John Johnston and the sons and daughters of my sister Elizabeth Boggs and the daughters of my sister Martha Campbell, all of the said legatees being my nephews and nieces.
