    1. [PACUMBER] License 222 BLUNSTON
    2. I must apologize to all listers. A message was prepared and sent to PACUMBER-L yesterday, but somehow never appeared on the list. Maybe I hit the wrong "send" button. My message stated that Lic #222 was issued to William RALSTON: "January 3, 1736, 100ac to William Ralston, on the south side of the Conedogwt amongst the Barrens joyning to the lower side of Widdow Jacks place (no license)." This should be in the vicinity of current-day Roxbury and Newburg, not far from the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church. Widow Jack (having no Blunston license) means in all probability that she and her husband were "squatters" and definitely were located there before 1736. Since Blunston started to issue licenses in January, 1734, it is also probable that Jack was there prior to this date. As long as squatters cleared their land and built a cabin, they were usually allowed to stay and eventually obtained a deed. The exception to this is when the squatter built on land that was not yet purchased from the Indians; in this case, the Sheriff and his posse may burn down the cabin and drive the pioneers off the property.
