Carlisle was named for the English town of Carlisle, and we are in Cumberland County, which is also an English county. After the Civil War, and several years as a training ground for cavalry, there evidently was no need or use for the "empty" Carlisle Barracks, so an army cavalry officer, Richard H. Pratt, received permission to establish the school. He rose from Lt to Brig. General and the school operated from 1879 to 1918.
