I can't find an article that specifically gives his name. Why was this town chosen for the Indian School? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
Good hot afternoon folks: I believe that the town of Carlisle, Cumberland Co., PA. was actually named for a town/city in England also called Carlisle. As for the Indian School being in Carlisle - I think it was because of the "Military school" that was already there and also because it was in the "east". I think a key point has been overlooked... Carlisle England is in the north of England just south of the western end of the Scottish border. The border clans spanned both sides of the border with many living in/around Carlisle. Given Cumberland County was settled circa 1750 by Scots-Irish, I think it is safe to say they named their new town after one near and dear to their hearts. For those who want more detail, I suggest they read The Steel Bonnets which describes the border clans (English & Scottish) between 1503 & 1603.
