Perhaps someone can help me. I am looking for Irvins/Irwins who moved to Virginia in the late 1750's? Their given names are John, Christopher, and Abraham Irvin. Men of the same name appear on the Petition of Defence from Cumberland county dated Aug. 7, 1755. They also appear to have served with Joseph Armstrong in the Militia from Cumberland. I have seen them perhaps associated with Lurgan Township, or Hopewell, and maybe the Middle Springs Presbyterian Meeting House. As far as I can tell, these Irvins are not related to the Irwins (James & Archibald, etc.) further south in Peters Township. John Irvin married one Mary Boyd, supposedly in Ireland and son Abraham was born aboard ship on the trip over to Pa. Maybe around 1739-1743? They probably settled in the Valley prior to the formation of Cumberland. Christopher may be John's brother and Abraham's uncle? Who knows? Lots of speculation and drivel from the old "vanity histories" but ver! y little primary source evidence. Does anyone have a clue? I can help someone with Virginia sources but I am just now working my way up the hill to Pennsylvania. Thanks, Edwin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
