You can check county-level resources by ordering microfilm from a Family History Center for probate records and deeds. You often find children named in probate records, of course, and often even when there is no probate, deeds can show family relationships particularly when property might be partitioned when the parents die. Or even transferred before they die. I have on PA ancestor who was in one county in 1870 with one wife and in 1880 in another county with a different wife. I assumed the first wife had died. Until I looked at the probate records for the second county. The man had died in late 1880 from a boiler explosion. Even though he owned no property, he did have some life insurance and the probate was necessary to distribute that. It came out there that the man and his first wife had been divorced two years prior to that and it told where those records were to be found. No way I could have known that through the Intern! et or even in books. There are almost no transcribed records for this county.
