This will give me something to work on the next time I'm in Pa. Do you know anything of the Palmer family? Mary Palmer married George Palmer, son of Jacob Boyer and Anna (Nancy) Swartz. I note you are in the Boyer family. Do you have info on Jacob Boyer's parents, grandparents, etc? >From a family source I show Jacob's father as Fredrick, however I believe his father was Philip. I was unable to find an online list for this cemetery. It is my next trip, maybe this coming weekend. Who are you looking for? If I go, I will look for you. It is very close to the Oyster Point area we have been discussing. I'm not sure how big it is but if possible, I will record all the names there. Janice: I am curious if Abraham Oyster,1775-1864 is buried there. His wife, Maria Kiesecker Oyster, 1790-1865, and at least three of his children and three of his son George's are in that cemetery according to my mother's records. Mother listed 17 Oysters buried there all told, including Abraham Jr. (1824-3) [I am pretty sure that she actually went to the cemetery, although she may have consulted some records as well. She does not have any written records footnoted.] Perhaps Abraham was buried there and his stone has deteriorated too much to read when she was there in the 1960's. This is not really urgent, so don't go to any real trouble, but let me know if you see his grave. OK, after reading the postings I received yesterday, I couldn't take the suspense anymore, so I got in the car and went to the Camp Hill Cemetery this morning. It has been a while since I was there, and I had many more names to look for - mostly Bowmans. I was not disappointed since there are so many. Anyway, I walked to the far corner (away from 23rd street - I think the northeast corner) and there under a huge pine tree/bush were tombstones, almost hidden from view. The inscriptions faced into the bush, and I was able to climb in there and identify Maria Nichols and Ann Nichols. There were 3 others beside it . One was definitely Jacob, but the last name looked like it started with an "S". The end of it looked like "berger" but the top of the "b" had a right hook to it. I believe it may be in German, but it is almost unreadable. The one beside it also looks to be the same last name, but I can't read the first name. The third on in this group is undreadable and is broken. There are a few other broken stones and one stone that looks like it was just a blank stone marker near these. Another note - there were new American Flags placed by the tombstones of Anna NICHOLS and Maria NICHOLS. There was also a new flag in a Revolutionary War holder placed by the stone for Jacob. Is there a special reason the flags would have been placed by the womens' graves? I have Anna HERSHBERGER's will and in it she officially establishes the Oyster's Point cemetery and says her husband is already buried there. She directs her executors to place stones on each of their graves. I am sure their name was HERSHBERGER or a variant spelling. I also have her deed (via executors) transferring the land per her will to Samuel, Ann and Maria Nichols. An abstract of Anna HERSHBERGER'S father's will (FUNK) says his daughter Anna is intermarried with Jacob HERSBERGER. So, why were the burials recorded with a different name, and why do the stones look like the names begin with an "S"? I guess it is within the realm of possibility the names were spelled incorrectly on the stone since they may have been done at the same time. I have seen the file on USGenWeb showing the transcription as Martzbager. I can't figure out how the names begin with an "M"- the stones don't look like an "M". Maybe a typo or a fancy H that either looked like an M or one of the sides looked like an S? The Abraham FUNK listed is Anna HERSHBERGER's brother. I believe the Christiana MAY listed is her daughter, but I don't have that documented/sourced yet. I am curious - where is there a plot listing of the Camp Hill Cemetery? Is it available for review? There were quite a few Bowman and Wolf stones that I couldn't read. The boro only has the plot holder cards and the layout of the cemetery. Thanks to everyone for all the information, you've been a tremendous help! Any chance you have any maps, etc. for 1880? I would be very interested in hearing more about the Thummas of Monroe Twp... thanks...Susan
Is there a list (hopefully, on line) of the graves in the Poplar Church or Old Poplar Cemetery in Camp Hill near Holy Spirit? I saw the name on the list of cemeteries in Cumberland County in the PaGenWeb archives, but did not see a list on line. Ame
It was the Wolfs who were in Monroe Twp.. There are 3. C. Wolf is in the NW corner along Trindle Springs Road near the Churchtown Road which runs at right angle to the Trindle Spring Road. G. Wolf is in Roxbury town. L. Wolf is just south of the Yellow Breeches on the western side of the township. Two Thummas are in Lower Frankford. P.Thumma is along the Conodoguinet and S. Thumma in the same area, but along a branch of Stine's Run. Sorry, this is pretty imprecise. I don't know these townships well. I have no later map except Camp Hill. Maybe someone else hasd one. This latter source also has Michael listed twice and the two soldiers in their index - Michale Egolf died 1817 and Elizabeth Egolf, died 1795, are found in Necrology, Cumberkland County. Other researchers gave me "Marriages and Deaths from the Carlisle Gazette and the Western Repository of Knowledge, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, 1786-1800 - suppose this is the reference. Maybe I misinterpreted the death date but I had Micheal; dying September 9, 1795, born October 2, 1727. And I had no information for his wife, Elizabeth. This was probably my mistake. What I now have from the above cemetery records - Micheal EGOLFF death: April 8, 1817. From his age 91 y, 6 d, 6 m, I caculate his birth date October 2, 1725. And Elizabeth died: Sept 8, 1795 at age 66 y. Therefore born: 1729. I would appreciate an Egolf seeker's comments. This may not be new but in any case I would appreciate confirmation of these dates. Does anyone know where the two soldiers fit? Regards Hal
