I have another Bowman/Bauman query I have been answer- ing, and may have sent you confusing information. I have been trying to link the Bauman of Ephrata [Johannes] with my grgrgrgrandfather Christian Bowman,b. 1794 that married Mary Mohler. He was supposed to have been born in Lancaster Co., but I am no longer sure, as I have tried every source in Lancaster to find his parents. I have a big file on the Ephrata Bauman\Bowman family and will share what I have. Myron Dunning

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JaB.2ACE/2916 Message Board Post: Hello all, Just started in on my Bowman ancestor and already have a tangle of knots. There's Bowman's everywhere ! And I'm trying to figure out which are mine. The facts I have (and not because I found them but because I trust the two researchers in the past - Silas Diller c.1905 and Robert Diller c. 1940) are there was a Jacob Bowman at least in the vicinity of Cumberland County Pa who had a daughter Elizabeth old enough to be married in 1800. Meaning he was born circa 1760 or before. I've started searching the Internet (I know there's no such thing as Internet genealogy but all the work and effort put out here has got to provide at the very least some great clues). I was beginning to focus on a cluster of Bowmans in Berks county in the 1790 census (per abstract). But questions have been raised ; which is great - I know genealogy is a never ending process and it never hurts my feelings to be challenged. And upon reviewing my source a disturbing new monkey wrench appears. Suppossedly the Diller family had an old family Bible from the original Diller, Frantz Tueller of Switzerland (to use the old spelling). But Robert Diller, in 1944, noted some discrepencies in the provenance of the Bible. In particular he noted that the Bible had " a brass plate with the letters 'V,B,' and the back has a similar plate with the date '1754.' ' He speculated it came into the Diller family from either Elizabeth Behme, wife of Francis Diller (1743-1814) or through the family of Elizabeth Bowman, wife of Francis Diller (1776-1845). I've noticed a few posts that reference a "Anna? Fronica Froeny Verina." Married a Jacob Bowman in Md or Pa about 1746. " I show he died in 1803. in Rockingham Co. Va." The Jacob I'm focusing on died im 1820 and is buried in Cumberland County, Pa. Could the Virginia Jacob be the father of Elizabeth ? David

It is very plainly for the Jacob buried in the Diller Church Graveyard. The only Jacob I can make any statement about with certainty is Jacob Bowman the father of Elizabeth who married Francis Diller on 25 May 1800. This Jacob Bowman also bought his "son-in-law Francis Diller" a farm in 1803 in Cumberland County. [Heck of a wedding present !] Now I'll admit just because he bought a farm in Cumberland County doesn't mean he lived there. And if you received information from Noel Trout I need to get in touch with him ; he also descends from the Dillers. David, ps. the only reason I added the "Bauman" is because I've seen other families go through that name evolution. In the mss Silas and Robert consistantly call Jacob "Bowman."

Second, you are switching families, from Johannes Bauman to Wendel Bowman family. There was a Jacob Bowman, son of Christian Bowman and Elizabeth Oberholtzer that moved from Berks Co. to Cumberland Co probably in the 1770's and had Christian Bowman, Samuel , Elizabeth, Magdelena and Abraham. Jacob was married to Mary Fohanzer 10 Jan 1752, and Elixabeth was born 25 july 1777. Jacob was buried in the Diller Mennonite Church Graveyard. I was giving info from Yvonne Bentz and Noel Trout. But, these are descen- dants of Wendel Bowman.

Elizabeth was present in Bedford, PA, by around 1820, and married William Fletcher, son of Jacob and Anna Margaret Fletcher of Bedford by 1825. I've not found a Rippey relative in Bedford during that timeframe, though the Piper's were plentiful. A question: would Elizabeth have come to live with a Piper relative in Bedford, presumably after the death of one or both parents in Shippensburg? I don't have death dates for either John Rippey or Mary Piper Rippey. The only proof of parentage is from the Hugh Rippey article inlcuded in the "Biographical Annals of Franklin Co." On a similar front, Julia Ann Fletcher, sister of William Fletcher of Bedford, married Col. John Piper (b. either 1798 or 1800, Shippensburg, d. 1870 in Gaysport, Blair Co.) in 1819 in Bedford. This John Piper is believed to be the son of William and Sarah Thompson Piper of Shippensburg (later in Bedford?). Was the Mary Piper, wife of John Rippey, tied to this William Piper? Was Elizabeth Rippey a cousin in some way to the John Piper who married her sister-in-law in Bedford? Calling all Rippey and Piper experts! David Fletcher Richmond, VA

A. - Millers, Tavernkeepers, Papermakers and Printers" and a book published in 1957 by Laura K. Heinhold, titled " Genealogy of John Bowman of the Seventh Day German Baptists of Ephrata, Pa." On the Church of the Brethren website, there is a list of the Cloister Members at the Ephrata site, and other information. I have a large file on the descendants of Johannes Bauman and Margaretha Guth. I have been trying to tie their son Christian, b. 1734. He is supposed to have married Nancy Ann Huber [Spohn] "Bowman/Bauman Family of Cocalico Township, Lancaster Co.,P A, Millers, Tavernkeepers,Paper- makers and Printers" , but I have not found a record of it. The book by author [Heinhold] "Genealogy of the Ephrata Bowmans" also states this. His will, gives the names of all of his siblings or surviving spouses and children, but makes no mention of children of his own. He was said to be a stone cutter and millstone -maker. Heinhold errs in attatching the children of my grgrgrgrandfather Christian Bowman, b. 1794 to Christian Bauman,b. 1734. Christian Bowman, b. 1794 was married to Mary Mohler and their children were: John Bowman, m. Catherine Longenecker; Anna Bowman, m. Daniel Balsbaugh; Mary Bowman, m. John Longenecker; Christian Bowman, m. Elizabeth Brightbill and Samuel Bowman, m. Susan Koons. I have not found the connection. I made a list of the Bowman I found in the census of the years 1795-1850 and 10 of them were related to Christian, b. 1794; 28 of them were related to Johannes Bauman and 4 of them were related to Wendel Bowman. Of course they could all be related in some way. Myron Dunning
