Cumberland Listers, Thanks to all who responded to my questions; what quick and helpful answers! In response to Donna: I am researching Jacob Edelblute (listed in 1790 US Federal Census, PA, Cumberland Co., Hopewell, Newton, Tyborn, and Westpensboro Townships census as "Jacob Edlebloot"). I show b. ~ 1746, but ancestry.com AGBI states b. 175? in PA. I am wondering if there is a way to tell in which Twp. he lived from the location on the census rolls (i.e., Roll M637_8, p. 84, image 0553). My ultimate goal (right now) is to find out who was his wife. Are there marriage records that go back that far? As a side note, the 1790 census shows 3 males over age 16, 6 males under age 16, and 1 female for Jacob's household! Whoever his wife was, she had her hands full with house full of boys. ;-) Trevor > > >-----Original Message----- >From: Donna Heller Zinn [mailto:djzinn@pa.net] >Sent: Saturday, October 26, 2002 9:35 AM >To: PACUMBER-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [PACUMBER] 1790 US Census - PA > > >Hi Tevor and Fellow Listers: > >I don't have the 1790 Census form in front of me - so I can't say for >sure what you wrote is correct or not but feel sure you are. Right you are Joe, I sure it was done frequently, and it was done for all the age break points, not just the 16 year mark. Bill, great reference..... Have seen on another list a caution on ages of children. Ages are not always what they seem. And it has to do with cost of passage. Age 4 and/or under were free, 4?-12 were half fare and full fare over 12.... So some who might have been 16 and able to pass for 12, might be listed that way to save a few £. -- joe
The township was probably TOBOYNE or TYRONE. The 1790 columns from left to right are; 1. All white males 16 or over, including head of household 2. All white males under 16 3. All females, including head of household 4. Others 5. Slaves
Could be either Toboyne or Tyrone twps. both existed in 1790. Right next to each other Toboyne north of Mifflin Twp and Tyrone north of Frankford. > > I feel pretty certain that your Tyborn Twp. is actually Tyrone Twp., now > Perry County. > -- joe
I've looked every where...I have a question. Harry P. Thumma b. 1879? was the son of John Henry and Susan (Wolf) Thumma. I can't find them in the 1880 census. Would his birth be documented anywhere? thanks...Susan

Hal, The following is from an ad for Henry Egle's book on the subject. "Names of Foreigners Who Took the Oath of Allegiance to the Province and State of Pennsylvania, 1727-1775" see www.genealogical.com It says the age was 16.: In 1727, the Pennsylvania Provincial Council passed a law requiring all "foreign" immigrants (i.e. those of non-British origin) to swear an oath of allegiance to the Crown. Lists of these immigrants were originally assembled for publication in the Pennsylvania Archives (Ser. 2, Vol. XVII), and they are reprinted here without change. This work, then, is an exhaustive list of "foreigners"-mostly Germans-who immigrated into the Province and, later, the State of Pennsylvania between the years 1727 and 1775 and again during the years 1786-1808. More to the point, it is a collection of ships' passenger lists, in many cases the lists being transcribed in entirety, with Captains' lists of passengers running up to the relatively late year of 1808. Along with the full name of the immigrant, including the names of all males over the age of sixteen, since that was the age they were obliged to take the oath, such information is given as name of ship, date of arrival, port of origin, and, in some instances, ages, names of wives, and names of children. An exhaustive index of surnames, running to more than 100 pages, contains about 35,000 references.
