I'm searching Sara Irvin (some records list her as Irwin) born about 1811 in Pennsylvania, she married Solomon Lightfoot in about 1832. Their daughter married into the Gushard family. Most of the history I have compiled is related to them in western Pennsylvania and then later of their life in the Richland county areas of Ohio. Do you see any possible connection? Kevin Frye sent this offer along and some may be interested in it. He has a great site and has put in a lot of effort in this project..... his site and email are in the following message. From Kevin Frye: Hello veterans and newbies of the RootsWeb. There are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are more than 32000 prisoners on record from the Union, and quite a few who were held prisoner here as Union regiments from Confederate states. There are also nearly 13000 marked graves of those who died here. I thought I would send my offer as these would lead to a great many descendants who might be looking for them.. I feel the need to say I am not in anyway trying to focus on the horrors of Andersonville compared to any POW camp in the north ..( i.e.Elmira ) or any others and do not wish to stir up arguments on this site. My focus is dedicated to ALL of those held prisoner during this war , on both sides as well as all Americans who gave their freedoms for those that we enjoy today.. I just happen to be near Andersonville so this is where I do my work Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as "UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I also have the continued update database which is dated October 01 2002. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as thephysical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please do not consider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking. Please email me directly at Frye@gnat.net If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask. Kevin Frye Local Historian / National Park Service Volunteer Thanks you for your time. Some time ago I asked What age male was required to take the oath? I would like to thank those who responded. The answer to my original question was found in a very interesting Introduction in the reference given below -- page xxii "male passengers of 16 years upwards were ordered to sign ..." in acknowledgement that they had taken three oaths. Three oaths. Yes. This posting goes a bit beyond that original question. If you have not read the text associated with the following reference I would suggest that if you are working with ship's records it is a must - Pennsylvania German pioneers Vol 1 1727-1775 A Publication of the Original List of Arrivals in The port of Philadelphia 1727 -1808 Ralph Beaver Strassburger Edited by William John Hinke Second Printing in Two Volumes. Volume I 1727-1775. Published by the Genealogical Publishing Company in 1980. In the Preface the publishers state that they have omitted the section containing the actual signatures (Volume II), but with that exception and a few other minor comments this version is said to be an exact copy of the original publication. I had it on CD 267 Broderbund. Also on that Cd are the following which I do not find helpful - to say the least--- [One Thousand Immigrant names in Pa 1727-1776 p 255 did not have all of the data given above- I will not use] [Foreigners Who Took the Oath of Allegiance p 174 did not have all of the data given above-I will not use] There are three lists in Volume I. The A list was the captain's ship list. It is not often available. An example p 360 List 110 B "Foreigners Imported Ship Ann Galley William Wilson, Captain from Rotterdam Qualified Sept 27, 1746" [ A note states: This is the Endorsed: list of Palatines imported in the Ann Gally (not Galley).] The oath associated with list B was an oath of allegiance to King George II Included are: Michael Egolff ( ) Johannes Egolff ( ) vs spellings Michael Egolff jr ( ) A note explains that the ( ) means that a clerk entered the name for a person who was absent and did not sign. The same names, with small differences in Johnnes spelling - including the ( ) are found on List C. List C was a Oath of Abjuration - I will summarize it - but you really should read it - One swore that he abhorred the thought of the Pope having jurisdiction of the king, and in the other one abhorred the claims of descendants of James I'st of Scotland to king George's throne. In other words on September 27, 1746, Michael EGOLFF, 1st, and Michael Egolff, junior and Johannes Egolff (vs spelling) are listed with those who gathered at City Hall to affirm their allegiance to King George II. And swear that they abhorred ..... so and so - but they were not there and they did not sign. Strassburger in the Forward page ix, states that the oath of allegiance lists are incomplete in that they only are those who were not sick on the day they were supposed to sign. In the Introduction page xxiv he further states that after 1739 the Clerk of the Council wrote in the names of absent passengers. I have made up a little story as to why they were not there and I will send it as a PDF attachment to any one who wants it. Several have already let me know there know interest and I have them on file - no need to duplicate. best regards Hal

I am trying to locate the parents of my Josiah (or Isaiah) Stevens (b. bet. 1790-1800) as well as the maiden name of his wife Ruth. I have found Josiah in the 1850 census of Huntington Twp. with his wife Ruth. In the 1860 and 1870 censuses there is an Isaiah Stevens with wife Ruth. There is also an Isaiah Stevens listed in the 1810, 1830, and 1840 censuses in Adams Co. My records indicate that the marriage of my Lydia Stevens to Edward Menges gives Lydia's parents as Josiah and Ruth Stevens. Finally, a Judith Stevens, wife of Josiah Stevens died on 2/16/1879, aged 84 years. If anyone can shed any light on my Josiah/Isaiah Stevens, it would be greatly appreciated. I was hoping someone could check to see if there were wills for the following individuals in Cumberland or Adams Counties: (1) Thomas Stevens (d. 2 Jun 1795 Cumberland Co., PA) (2) John Stevens Sr. (d. 2 Apr 1813 Cumberland Co., PA) (3) Hannah Stevens/Stephens (d. 14 Oct 1818 Cumberland Co., PA) (4) Other Stevens??? I am trying to track down the parents of my Josiah Stevens who was born between 1790 and 1800 and was living in 1850 in Huntington Twp., Adams Co., PA. I have found a Josiah Stevens listed in a 1795 Chester County will of Rachel Stevens, which lists Rachel's father as John Stevens, but the date is likely too early to refer to my Josiah. Any help with wills, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Don Lerew DLerew@messiah.edu
