Jack, As I understand it when a message is gatewayed from a message board to the list, the list owner has very little control over it. But if you go to the Cumberland county message boards you will find that the message has been deleted. Some of you may be interested in a 38 page book by Rev. Wm. Swaim, former minister of Big Spring Presby. Church, Newville, PA. This book, "...Over the River..." is still available through the Newville Historical Society, Cumberland County Histroical Society, or through the William Swaim Historical Trust (LtcMax117@aol.com). This book covers the first 100 licenses issued by Samuel Blunston in 1734-36 to pioneer settlers in the Cumberland Valley. Nearly 300 families are named. The Valley at that time also included Franklin County. Several maps are included which indicate where the earliest families settled. There are Kilgores and "McLoghlins" mentioned. The oldest existing public building in Newville is the Laughlin Mill (ca1762) on Rte. 641.

Good morning, Tom Thank you for the information about McLaughlin/Laughlin of Cumberland County. James Kilgore and family were residents of Green Spring, Newton Twp, Cumberland County from something like 1754 until his death in 1771. He had been present in the area since 1734, having at one time owned land where Carlisle was established. Big Spring Presbyterian church was where certain marriages, etc. took place in the Kilgore family. Alexander Laughlin must have been a close friend, I do not think he was related to the kilgores. As I read through the various documents of that era I am impressed by the number of close associates these people had. There seemed always to be someone to name as guardian for the children, or to witness wills and deeds. Please keep me in mind if you should come across some Kilgore information. Dear Rita, As I understand it, McLaughlin was the original spelling, but some dropped the prefix upon coming to America. There were Laughlins in the Mifflin/Newton Twps. (Cumberland) area at the same time as the McLaughlins, but my information is too scant to tell if they were related. The only record I have of Alexander McLaughlin was in 1790 at Big Spring Presbyterian Church where he is listed as renting a pew. I believe he was the brother of our Daniel McLaughlin whose name is also on the list along with a Hugh McLaughlin. All three were, we think, sons of Hugh McLaughlin Sr. who died about 1775.
