PA -- who they married, where they ended up, etc. Both show up in wills of Cumberland Co. in the late 1700's. The first is the son of John Mitchell whose will (Rye Twp.) was dated Dec. 27, 1773. He lists a wife Agness and children David, Mary, John, James, Jane (Parkeson), and Searea (Hart). The second is the son of Gawin Mitchell, whose will (Newtown) was dated April 18, 1778. He lists a wife Isabella and children Alexander, Ezekiel, Susanna, margaret, Agness, Jean, Ruth, James, Robert, and a son-in-law, Josias Brown. I am descended from a James Mitchell of Cumberland Co. who was b. ca. 1739 and m. Esther (Hetty) Gibson. They ended up in Washington Co. PA. I suspect that he was one of the two Jameses in the Cumberland Co. wills... but which one? If anyone knows anything about either of the James Mitchells mentioned in the wills above, it would be very helpful! Thanks, Gordon Bonnet Trumansburg NY

I have been searching for the parents and siblings of my David Houser for along time. The birth date (year) of your John Houser is close to my David Housers, with my David being born in 1814, your John, 1815. When did your John marry? The reason I ask is that my David married ca. 1838 to his first wife, Leah Saunda, and their first child was born in 1839. He married his second wife, Catherine after the death of Leah (1851,) ca. 1853. It's seems to me that your John must have married later in life as you mention Samuel, born abt 1852. My David and his first wife Leah had 5 children by 1851. David had 9 children with his second wife, Catherine, with the first being born in 1854. What I find interesting is the names of your John's children. My David had a Samuel, born 1860, Matilda, born 1858, and a John Henry (my ggg grandfather, b. 1849,) and a George, b. 1842. Also interesting that my David's "Samuel's" middle name was Augustus, (i.e. your George August.) I do not know whether the names are just what one would call "popular" names for that time, or could it be that these folks were indeed related as they did do what I call the "naming pattern" after family members. Hmmmm..... I am still searching, so please keep in touch if something pops up. I will do the same! Tammy

Siobhan, Wilson Taggert Vanasdlen (Vanasdal), b. 6 Jul 1836 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, was the youngest of six children of Isaac Vanasdlen and his second wife Margaret Steel. He married Catherine A. Beetem at Gill's Hotel in Carlisle, Pennsylvania on 7 Oct, 1858. They had three children before his death 31 Dec 1864, Carrie A., b. 1859, John, b. Oct 1861 and Wilson Elmer, b. 9 Aug 1864. Wilson is buried in the Centreville Lutheran Church Graveyard in Centreville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. As I recall he is buried next to his wife Catherine though she later remarried (Jacob B. Kling/Cling) and had another daughter. Wilson's cemetery marker says simply, "Vanasdal, W. T., Co. K. 20th Pa. Cav". The Cumberland County Historical Society has microfilmed copies of the local papers that contain articles concerning his death and the trial of the men who shot him. Specific dates I found were Jan 5 and 6, 1865 and April 21, 1865. I'm currently living out-of-state and unfortunatel! y don't have copies of the articles with me. John appears in the 1870 census of Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in the household of his mother and her new husband Jacob. I lose track of him after that except for a marriage notation in "The Snohomish County Washington 1926 Biographys" that indicates he married Anna Francis 7 Nov 1891. I don't have anything to put John in Monroe Township, though his grandparents and other relatives certainly spent some time there. I descend from Isaac Vanasdlen and Margaret Steel as well, though through Wilson's older brother William. I hope this information is helpful. Let me know if you have other questions or would like to share more information. Wolf can be a Brethren surname. What kind of church is Rehoboth? Or was at the time of Jacob's death? Rev. Thomas Craighead was "relieved" of his position of minister at the Pequea Church in Lancaster County. This was due to a disagreement between he and his wife. Thomas insisted on moving his son and daughter-in-law into the parsonage, which his wife disagreed with. Thomas refused to serve communion to his wife because of this family dispute. The congregation took the side of the wife and Thomas then moved to the Middle Spring and Big Spring Presbyterain Churches in the Newville area of Cumberland County. This was in October of 1738, so he became the very first Presbyterain minister to become pastor of a church west of the Susquehanna River. His son, Alexander, also a Presby. minister, installed his father into this position. Thomas died in the pulpit of the Big Spring Church as he was giving the benediction at the close of his sermon in April, 1739. Rev. Alexander left the area and became a minister in N. Carolina. This Rev Thomas was born in Scotland, son of Rev. Robert.. Thomas and his wife were parents to four sons and one daughter (Thomas, Andrew, Alexander, John and Jane).. Thomas (jr), was born in Ireland in 1702. He married Margaret Brown and they had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Capt. James Mackey, and secondly married Rev. Matthew Wilson. There is much more Craighead genealogy at the Cumberland County Hitorical Society.
