To RHilands Your books are in the mail, including "Over the River" by Wm. Swaim that mentions one of the pioneer settlers of the Cumberland Valley , Willoughby Winchester. Now, I want to tell you about Willoughby Winchester. He is mentioned by name on Page 15 and Page 32 of "Over the River." However, there is more data on him in the Swaim collection. 1. Samuel Blunston issued a license to Winchester on 11 Sep 1734 for a total of 200 acres. 2. A Blunston License was not an official warrant or deed, because the Penn family would not sell land until they had made a final purchase agreement with the Indians. This treaty finally was approved in Oct. 1736. So the license gave permission for a pioneer to settle on the ground, but the land survey and deed may not follow until several years had passed. Sometimes, the pioneer took out a license, but then moved onto "greener pastures" without ever paying for the land. The land would then be resold. 3. Here is a verbatim copy of the Blunston License #94: "On the South side of Conegochege at a place called the two spring meadow, between Edward Nichols (no license) and John Bossett (no license)." The notation, "no license," means that Nichols and Bossett were already settled in this area but had not gotten a license from Blunston. They might have been "squatters" or may have had some sort of paper previously issued by the Lancaster County or Philadelphia Land Office. 4. Swaim then goes on to say, "see License #59." License 59 was issued by Blunston to Thomas Brown on June 10, 1734, for 400 acres. Brown's license says," On a South East Branch upon an improvement he bot of Willoughby Winchester (#94) up Falling Spring Run." This is odd because Brown got his license in June and Willoughby got his in September. So, who was there first????? However, it is important to note that the license spoke of the Falling Spring Run which is near to current-day Chambersburg. Hope this helps you with your search.....................Wilmer

Wilmer - Could you tell me where I could find more specific information on Blunston licenses? I saw an index that said my William CARNAHAN had one - but I don't know where or when. Do I have to contact the land office or is there a book somewhere? Thanks for your help.
