Loyd- John GASS received a Samuel Blunston License (#11) on February 25, 1734, for 250 acres along the Conodoguinet Creek near Carlisle, PA. This data is reported (with an actual photocopy of his license) in the Swaim book, "Over the River..Cumberland Valley Farm Tracts licensed by Samuel Blunston." LtcMax in Carlisle, PA

Kathy, Apparently there was a Josiah Brown born to a James and Sarah Brown on the same date?, for sure the same year listed as Josias was born. It was submitted to LDS and from there it was picked up by several others. I E-mailed all of my "cousins" and also a man known as Chuck Brockman and asked it to be taken off unless they had documentation. Everyone has agreed so far. I have been reading Histories of Ulster in several books, history of England, history of Scotland, and Ireland. The "James" came from southern England and Josias came from Ulster. Until I have proof, Josias is without a father. Thanks, Jan O'Brien Jan
I have been working on getting this changed. Is there a way do change the information on Ancestry? Apparently there was someone who found a Josiah Brown born to a James and Sarah Jan
We have John SINGLE household E. Pennsboro, 1840, with about ten "free colored." What crop would they be raising? Or was it a half-way house? My great-grandfather, George MATER, is listed next door and he never purchased any land. He is either living on the Single land or on the land of his other neighbor, Elizabeth MORISON- she was 40-50 and no male in the household. George MATER was probably a weaver. George, a Lutheran, married Elizabeth KINDER in 1823 and she was probably a Mennonite. Were either of these families, that is SINGLE and MORISION, Mennonite? George and Elizabeth died in 1848 but there is no record that we can find of where they are buried.. This part of E.Pennsboro became Hampdon Township in 1845. I am trying to check out the known cemeteries in that township. Anyone have an idea. Hal
Hi Jan: Don't know much on the BROWN families - anywhere. I would suggest contacting the Cumberland Co. Historical Society for research. I know they do research requests for a fee. Sorry I couldn't be of any help at this time! I had a major breakthrough this afternoon on this line...the only Charles N. Burkholder that matched in the 1880 census was in Rush Co., KS, s/o James C. and Anna B. Burkholder, all of whom were born in PA. I got the idea to check the 1900 census to see if they moved back to PA, and found this same James and Anna in Lower Mifflin Twp., Cumberland Co.! Further research revealed James as the son of David S. and Margaret Craig Burkholder of Lurgan twp., Franklin Co. Would appreciate any information anyone might have on this line. Tom
Awhile back there was mention of two books on Scotch-Irish in Pa. "A tribute to the principles, virtues, habits and public usefulness of the Irish and Scotch early settlers of Pa." Pub. in 1856. And: "Histories of Lancaster, Cumberland and Franklin counties" by Rupp. I cannot locate either of these two book in local libraries and wonder where they might be located? Ann agatha1@flash.net

He married a Mary ( Povenmeyer/Bovenmeyer ) and had several children. One of them was another John Hale, who was born in 1803 in Cumberland co. I'm stuck and cant find more info on John Hale and Mary. Mainly I need John Hale's parents, and when/where he was born. I know John died in 1856, and Mary in 1860. Both died in Cumberland county. Usefull info would be their dates, & places of birth, and both parents names. Also names of siblings. If there is a CD I can buy that has this data I'm not against spending some $ if its going to help. Thank you. Jim Hale
Thank you for checking, Doug. I have since found a lot on the Cohick line (Bertie was the daughter of Willis and Elizabeth Stout Cohick of Mifflin Twp.) but not much on Burkholders. The only children I have for Charles and Bertie Cohick Burkholder were Ethel, b. 1898 md. Cloyd William George, and Vera, b. 1911. There may have been others. There was a Charlie Burkholder, age 4, son of David and Margaret Burkholder, in the 1880 census for Lurgan Twp., Franklin Co. but our Charles N. was born in March 1874 according to 1900 census for Frankford Twp. Cumberland Co. Jan: The Family Trees on Ancestry.com have quite a few entries for your Josias Brown, showing parents to be James and Sarah Brown of England. None seem documented, but it might be a good idea to contact the various people who posted them. Kathy
Donna, I am looking for more information on Josias Brown, b. 1744, place unknown, married Hannah Mitchell. He lived in Newville I believe and served in the PA Militia. I believe he moved into Cumberland County in about 1862, We have been to your historical society a couple of years ago. If you have any information on any Browns in that location I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you, Jan O'Brien
I dont find Bertie Mae Cohick marred into Burkholder line anywhere. What was the name of the children? I will continue to look for this family if they tie in with Ulrich Burkholder.
