    1. [PACUMBER] RE: WALNUT BOTTOM
    2. Joe Patterson is correct. The town of Walnut Bottom (also called Jacksonville for many years) is currently in South Newton Twp, which was taken out of Newton Twp. which was taken out of Hopewell Twp. This village (had six house in 1819) went through the following name changes: Frystown, Canada, Jacksonville, and Walnut Bottom. It is important to note that Walnut Bottom is also the name of the road which runs from Carlisle to Shippensburg. So, if your historical notation states that John Doe lived along, near, or on the Walnut Bottom , it may mean a township other than Newton.

Thanks, Dru > Dru, Being an old New Englander, I have come across this many times. Almost always, the term "consort" is used to describe a woman who died while her husband was still living. Had she been widowed, the stone would have said she was "Relict of" so and so. As I said, that is almost always the case. There are rare exceptions, of course, but they seem to have been created by a stonecutter or family member who didn't understand the terminology themselves. This is useful if you have found a woman buried alone, without an obvious husband nearby. If she's called consort, he was still able to have moved after her death, or he could have remarried and ended up buried elsewhere. I hope that helps. Brian
