    1. Best place to research early Cumberland Co. records in PA?
    2. Jill F Lackey
    3. I would like to go to PA this summer and do some genealogy research. Can anyone advise me on the best place to do this? I don't plan on driving there, so I hope it is in a fair size city and not in a rural area. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, March 19, 2006 9:00 AM To: [email protected] Subject: PACUMBER-D Digest V06 #55

Jane was born 1781; and died in December 1838 in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. James Spottswood was born Abt. 1780; died in 1828 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He was the son of William Spottswood. The only other information I have is: On April 13, 1799 James bought lot number 52 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, which he and his wife Jane sold in December 1805. I would appreciate hearing from you if you have any information on this family.

    1. Courthouse parking & Peters Twp
    2. First, there is courthouse parking within 1/2 block. It is a commercial 4 or 5 story garage located behind the "old" courthouse. Several other metered parking lots are within 1 and 1/2 blocks to the north. As to Peters Twp (now Franklin County) one of the earliest families to settle there was Maj. William Maxwell and his wife Susannah. They came from Ireland and settled in Peters Twp in 1738. However, it was still part of Lancaster County and was called Rathmullen Township. As a Major in the colonial wars, he served under Col. Benjamin Chambers. William also became the first justice for western Cumberland County in 1750. He had two sons, James and Patrick, and four daughters, Mary, Catherine, Ruth and Agnes. The Kittochtinny Historical Society has detailed information on this family. Several years after his death, the family evidently moved down the Great Valley into Virginia. Up until about 1750-60, the entire Cumberland Valley was approximately 90% Scot-Irish according to the research of Rev. William Swaim. He wrote many books about the early Presbyterians and their churches in the Valley. He also wrote about the Samuel Blunston Licenses and listed the first c300 familes that crossed the Susquehanna River to settle in York, Cumberland and current-day Franklin Counties.

    1. Moore, Oates, Davis, Spence, Scott, Wilson
    2. Jill F Lackey
    3. These are surnames of people who were (apparently) in Cumberland Co., PA very early (mid 1700s). About half of them migrated to the area of the fluid NC counties of Tyron, Lincoln, Rutherford on areas such as Indian Creek, Buffalo Creek (along the Broad River), and Ward's Creek; and to Crowders Creek which is on the SC/NC boundary. Some of the Oats and Moores (later joined by a Going) were Indian traders. Is anyone on this list tied to these families? If so, I would like to share information. Also--can anyone tell me something about the early inhabitants of Cumberland Co.--especially those in Peters Township. These folks appear to be Scots-Irish by the naming patterns, but they are too early to be part of the Scots Irish large migration waves. Were these some of the indentured servants (Irish and Scots Irish) who were shipped for a period to Barbados and then came to the mainland early when their time period was up? Or were they English Quakers? Were they Scots? Does anyone know? My later ancestors (by later I mean late 1700s) were Presbyterians so the suggestion is they were Scottish or S-I, but I am just not certain. Any info from your family histories would help me a lot. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, March 07, 2006 1:00 AM To: [email protected] Subject: PACUMBER-D Digest V06 #51

    1. Migration from Cumberland to York SC
    2. I do know that some people from Cumberland ended up in Rutherford Co NC, which was right on the SC border and not so far from York Co SC. Martha Giffin of Cumberland Co (baptised Mar 1757, daughter of Andrew) married Samuel Young, almost surely in Cumberland Co since her family was still there, and this couple was in Rutherford Co by 1798 at the latest, perhaps earlier. There are many other names I've found on the Cumberland tax lists of the 1750s and 1760s who appear to be the same names found in that part of NC later on, though I've never traced any of them to the degree that is absolutely certain. I do suspect that some of those folks may have stopped over in the Shenandoah Valley of VA for a bit. If you'd like a lookup(s) on the Cumberland tax lists, let me know. Graham Louer Frisco TX

    1. John Sylvester ARNOLD
    2. The Coleman's
    3. Good Morning Everyone! I am looking for information on the parents of John Sylvester ARNOLD. I have him being born on January 1, 1820 in Silver Spring Township. I have his parents as Ranson (Renson or Reason) Arnold and Elizabeth Beltz Arnold, however, this is where the information on them ends. They were both born around 1784. Ranson/Renson/Reason appears in the 1820 and 1830 census in Middleton. In the 1850 census, Elizabeth is living with her son John in Sandycreek Township, Venango Co., and his brother William Arnold and family are living in Irwin Township, Venango Co. Before the 1860 census, they move to Meigs County, Ohio. Any information on Ranson and Elizabeth would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gary
