    1. Brady Reunion
    2. Hello Brady Cousins: Just a reminder, the reunion is fast approching and we need to get our food count to the University. The reunion is for any and all descendants of Hugh Brady (born 1709) and his wife Hannah McCormick. Children are welcome. This is a reunion for the entire family. Revolutionary Encampment, free covered wagon rides, lots of Colonial re-enactors and Craft demonstrators. If you have not yet sent in your registration and you are planning to do so, please let me know so we can reserve your meals. The May 2006 Newsletters were all sent last week.  If you did not receive yours, please let me know.  A few were returned to me. So.... Hitch up the Team, Load up the Wagon and Head On Home to the land where Hugh & Hannah and their children lived, worked and prayed. Through the generosity of Bruce Lampe, owner of the Old Brady Homestead, we will be at the property for the reunion on Friday June 30 & Sat July 1, 2006. There is going to be a great opportunity to help get things ready on Friday June 30.  Come early and lend a hand.  Many hands make light work. See you there! Cousin Donna

    1. Conrad Ginther d 1728
    2. zurlauben
    3. Jean and others have told me the York County Archives held Conrad Ginther's will, probated February 28, 1828, and orphan court papers. The archivist sent me the will first and it may be summed up as follows: Conrad Ginther did not mention his wife nor any sons. He gave his house and two lots in the town of Mountpleasant (Managhan Township) to his unmarried sister, Catharina. He gave $100 to each of his daughters, Throaday, widow of Philip Benedick, and Christina wife of Martin Kindig. The balance to his brother, George. He named friend John Jacoby of Conewago Township executor. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have a Daniel Kinder in Cumberland County who I had reason to speculate came from York County, but since Daniel was not mentioned in this will I told the Archivist that I did not need the Orphan's Court papers. But when I discovered they had already copied them I said OK send them. (This is one of the most efficient, friendly sources I have ever known, and I very gladly paid for the Orphan's Court papers - even though I did not imagine they would be of any help.) Very surprising to me in those court papers - Daniel Ginter and his wife Catharine in May 1834 began an action to bring John Jacoby to the court to report on his handling of the estate. Daniel said he was an heir and that Jacoby was wasting and mismanaging the estate. The court accepted his statement and ordered Jacoby to file his administrative account - eventually in January 1835 the court ordered the Sheriff to bring Jacoby in on contempt charges. There were no further papers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So by this unusual circumstance I found a Daniel who could be and probably is the Daniel Kinder of Cumberland County. I suppose the only way he could be an heir is if he were the son of George and George has died - no will of George has been reported so I suppose he died intestate. There is only a George Giunder in the 1800 Manchester census (20010//3001), and no Conrad that we can find in York County census by any similar name. In the 1810 census no George in Manchester but a George Kinder in Dover Township (00001//00110). We assume the Conrad Ginter who wrote the 1828 will is the Conrad Kinder in Manchester 1810 census. And there is a Jacob Kinder in 1810 census York County, Manchester Township, Pennsylvania, page #: 162 (2 1 00 1 // 0 0 1 3 1 the male 16-18 block is not included) In 1820 Daniel Kinder is in Allen Township, Cumberland County. We found no George nor Conrad in York County by any name variation. They are both probably in York County, but we can not find them. Listers have sent me church records of Gunther vs sp early years in York County - 1750's that are very this Conrad or his ancestors - can not make a firm connection. Regards to the list: Hal

There are no federal land records for Pennsylvania. You would normally get land records from the individual courthouses in the counties in PA, but I would check first to make sure the records you want are not being held at an archives or historical society off-site from the courthouse. There were several years of tax records for Cumberland County in the 1700s that were published. I can't remember off the top of my head which years they were, but the Library of Congress has the book in their online catalog. The description of the book gives you the years of the tax records that it covers, as I recall. Go to: www.loc.gov Click on the "search catalogs" button and put the words "Cumberland Pennsylvania" and "tax records" in the search engine and it should come up.

Have you looked into this? Ancestry lists two different PA regiments that had a John Duncan in them. Interestingly, both regiments had two men with that same name. It is possible that this could be father and son serving--or not. The regiments are: 1. Cobean's Battalion, Pennsylvania Volunteers 2. 2nd Regiment, (Ritscher's) Pennsylvania Militia I don't know where these regiments originated. If anyone has a Virgil White 1812 pension index (book), you could ask them to check and see if either John was pensioned. A pension file would tell you a lot. Even if there is no pension file, if either of them lived beyond 1850, they could have applied for bounty land under the act passed in 1850, and would have a bounty land file at NARA.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JaB.2ACE/3519.1 Message Board Post: The homestead act wasn't passed until 1862. If your John bought land out west before then, it was for some other reason. There are a number of federal land purchases in Indiana under the name "John Duncan" at the Bureau of Land Management website, but because it is a common name, you would need to narrow down where his land actually was in order to know if any of those transactions listed might be the one you're interested in. Each listing at the BLM site has an accompanying file of information at NARA. The transactions that are marked: "cash entry" (when you click on them) have very little information, in fact, they usually just consist of a small dated cash receipt showing how much was paid, and also a slip showing the coordinates of the land that was purchased. Any transactions listed as "homestead" or "scrip" or some other act of Congress that the land was sold under may have more information than cash-entry transactions. Homestead files are very informative. The BLM site has the patent certificates viewable online, but anything else in the file would have to be obtained from NARA. The BLM website where you can search for patents in federal land states is: www.glorecords.blm.gov There is also a fine tutorial to the grid system at that site. Good luck in your search!

    2. CROTHERS/CAROTHERS/CARRUTHERS: On the 1798 federal tax list, we find no CROTHERS, however, the following are listed in Cumberland County: Alexander, (2) Andrew, Armstrong, (3) James, (4) Johns, Martin, (4) Thomas, and William CAROTHERS. There was one listing for Sarah CARRUTHERS. Two Johns were in West Pennsboro, one in Frankford, and one attorney in Carlisle.. In 1778, there was a John and George CARROTHERS and a John CARRUTHERS. George was in Peters Twp (current Franklin Co.) and the Johns were in East Pennsboro. If you go to _www.google.com_ (http://www.google.com) and type in "carrothers family" +genealogy, you will find twenty websites to research.

    3. Hello Wilmer - By any chance, do you have access to the 1798 Index to Cumberland Taxes? If so, might a family by the name of CROTHERS appear there? I've been trying to trace my James Crothers, who may have had a brother John. They owned farms in Phelps, New York next to each other. In 1836,they split; James took his family to Canada, while John moved to Rochester. But both claimed they were born in Pennsylvania, and another researcher thinks she traced John to Cumberland County. I haven't been able to find any birth records, thusfar - James was born circa 1806, and John 1810. Thanks for any information you might have! There will be a small charge for them to furnish the obituary to you, but worth it to you. Or if you live in the Harrisburg area, you could always go to the library.
