    3. Hi Folks: There was in fact an 1890 Census. But... this census was only for the surviving Civil War soldiers and their spouses. Seeing that John was in the Civil War.... you may be able to find Susan listed as a surviving spouse. If she remarried, you may also find her by using her husband's Company and Regiment. Thumma at the Rehobeth Cemtary near Walnut Bottom, Cumberland Co, PA thinking that the Thumma in the grave was probably some how related, but never thinking he was my Gr Gr Grandfather. After requesting military records, I found out very quickly that he was my Gr Gr Grandfather. He married, Susan Wolf - daugher of Joseph and Elizabeth Wolf - had two sons, served in the Civil War and died when the boys were not very old. He is last seen in the 1880 Census as Thummy. Of course without the 1890 I have no idea where Susan and the boys went. Do later find the boys with families, but would like to find out what happened to Susan. Any help greatly appreciated. She married ALFRED A BARRICK before 1880 census was taken. In 1880 census with Alfred & Lizzie was his sister-in-law ELLIE JONES, age 12 (born c.1868). Does anyone have this line of Jones? I cannot find any clues as to parents. The only other reference from a family bible information is a reference to a JOHN JONES who died at age 72 (no dates given) and was a Civil War Veteran. I don't know relationship of John to Lizzie, his birth or death date. Any information or leads at all would be greatly appreciated!

    1. Map Guide to County Formations
    2. One of the best books I ever purchased is "Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Censuses 1790-1920" by William Thorndate & William Dollarhide. I am sure you can find it on the web some where, try google.com and put the name in the search box. This book is a map guide showing outline maps at ten-year intervals, the old county boundaries being superimposed over the modern lines. So at a quick glance you can see what counties the one you are working on was formed from. The maps start with 1790 and end with 1920. In the preface it says once the 1930 census is released they will be adding 1930 to any new editions. There may be sites on the Internet now that has the same maps but this book covers every state in the US and they are all in one book not on several different sites on the web. I do not remember what I paid for this book nor where I purchased it, I have had it for about 10 years. I can't tell you how many times I have referred to this book and it has been a great help in keeping me on track as to which county to look for records. The only thing it is lacking is the exact date of the formation for each counties. For PA that can be found at on the following website. http://www.pagenweb.org/formation.html

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JaB.2ACE/3550.1 Message Board Post: Cumberland County was created in 1750 from Lancaster County. Northumberland Co. was created in 1752 from parts of Cumberland, Northampton, Lancaster, Berks, and Bedford Counties. PA evolved from a few original counties to the present 67 counties, so your ancestors could live in the same spot all their lives, but their records could be in 2, 3 or 4 counties because of the way the counties were created. Your library may have maps of PA at different years, showing how the counties appear.

    1. Re: Newville Quad Map
    2. Hi Jack - The Big Spring Presbyterian Church was my family church as a teenager in Newville. This was Rev. Swaim's church and how I got to know him back in the early 1930s. In 1735, when the Cumberland Valley was part of Lancaster County, the valley was divided into Hopewell and Pennsboro Townships. So the Big Spring Church was definitely in Hopewell Twp, until Newton Twp. was formed in 1767. Then it was the Big Spring Presby. Church of Newton Twp. until Newville was established in 1790. Regarding your question about squatter's rights, I do not have any proof or source to check, but I do believe that they were able to sell their property when they found a buyer. This is probably when the term "buyer beware" first became popular. The Penn Family practically gave the land away, charging a few cents (annual quit rent) per acre per year. With the 1776-1783 Revolutionary War coming to an end, the Penns lost all of the state lands except the tracts that had been surveyed prior to 1776 into Manors or Proprietary Tenth. However, the new Pennsylvania authorities must have felt some guilt, so they also paid the Penn family about 160,000 pounds sterling to "buy" the remainder of the 45,000 square mile commonwealth. Glad you found your ancestors' farm tracts.........Max
