In our recent visit to Crawford Co., we got into the will of Robert Blair b 1785 (son of Hugh Blair b 1741) who married Martha McQuiston b 1791(dau of Andrew McQuiston b 1762). The will actually states that on Thursday a new will was written from 12:00 noon until 2:00 am in the morning. On Saturday morning 3/4/1854, Robert died. Now Robert & Martha had no children of their own, so Robert left 1/3 to his wife; 1/3 to the children of his sister Elizabeth and 1/3 to others. Now Elizabeth's children, sons of James McMaster, just happen to be Hugh, John, and James McMaster. He also stated that if his wife protested the will; she was to get nothing. Did she protest the will!!! All the way to the PA supreme court. It is now 1858, Hugh McMaster is off to Pittsburgh for the hearing. Opinion delivered by J. Lowrie; "If this example (of overturning the will) were followed in the administration of the law, every dying man's will would be in danger". The will was upheld. So who got what!!! That's what we would like to know. Unfortunately, Crawford Co. has poor records on dispersement. There is no stone for Martha beside Robert Blair. Is she there? Also, we visited Hartstown Cem. and found vandals damaged about 10 stones. One of those stones was of Thomas McLenahan/McClenahan. Thomas McLenahan b 1767 d 1847 dau Mary b 1799 d 1844 m Alexander Henry (brother of Robert Henry) dau Esther b 1800 d 1856 m Hugh McMaster son Thomas b 1804 d 1876 dau Martha b 1815 d 1893 m James Free Henry (son of Robert Henry) We left Thomas Sr.'s broken stone pieces leaning against his son's stone. It is written that Andrew McQuiston stayed with Thomas when they arrived in Adamsville from SC. So Martha McQuiston knew Thomas as well as Hugh McMaster did. A sad moment when we saw his stone in pieces. Thomas McLenahan Jr's land can be seen on the 1876 map near J F Patton's land located half way between Adamsville and Hartstown. On the J F Patton land is the newly found McMaster Cem. All the stones appear to be replacement stones. What happened to the originals!!! It was reported that Hugh Fletcher Blair's stone was being used as a back step at the original Blair's homestead. Now Hugh Blair just happened to be the son-in-law of Hugh McMaster (they sure loved that name Hugh). Hugh Blair's daughter has a stone in the McMaster Cem; no record of father Hugh. Is he buried there also or is he buried under the back step!!! Did the Blair's make a raid on the McMaster Cem!!! Was this lawsuit the start of the Hatfield and McCoys of Crawford Co.? Bob Hayden
