Rootsweb List I was so pleased to read about your interest in Titusville, Pa..I was born in Titusville in 1939, and lived there till 1960 when my husband, myself, and our two children moved to Denver, Colorado. Benson Memorial Library is the Public Library and is located on North Franklin St.. The private library you were speaking of is The Scheide Library at 221 North Washington St.. In my book " Titusville An Illustrated History " written by Mabel K. Clark Social Studies Coordinator of Titusville Area Schools it say`s it was one of the outstanding private libraries in the United States. When John Scheide died in 1942, his son , William H. Scheide took over the responsibility of the Library. In 1959 William gave the property to the Titusville Area School District. Since that time , it has been used as the Administration office for the District. The book`s and paper`s from the Library were moved to the Princeton University Library. If you are interested in purchasing one of these wonderful book`s ( I have two, one of the original`s published in 1976, and a revised edition published in 1993 ) I believe you can purchase it from the 221 North Washington St. address of The Titusville Area School District. You will be thrilled reading about Titusville and the Oil Industry. There are many pictures to show you what Titusville looked like then and now. I also have another book " Titusville of Yesterday " published by Seneca Printing Co. of Oil City, Pa., copyright 1984 that hold`s a very special place in my heart. I purchased this book at the Drake Well Museum souvenir shop of Titusville. Anyone who is interested in Titusville would be proud to own these two book`s.
