Courier & Record, 1 Sept 1882: Mr. Calvin Gates of Beaver township, mention of whose critical condition from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy was made in our last issue, died on Monday, just one week after being attached...In his death passed away one of the oldest residents of Western Crawford, one who has been very useful and influential in his community for nearly half a century. He was born in Herkimer Co., NHY 24 Feb 1803. At the age of 20 years he came west to Chautauqua Co. where in 1831 he was married to Caroline Hubbard, who survives him. In 1836 he made another move west, settling in Beaver upon the farm upon which he spent the remainder of his life. Mr. Gates was among the first of the active, enterprising men to settle in the township, and he at once made his presence felt for good in pushing forward road making and other improvements so sadly lacking in the the new country. He was nver an aspirant for any office, but was often called to fill positions in his township in which he always tried to do his duty. In early life he associated with the Christian Church, but the local society going down, he did not again unite with any organization. He was alwys blessed with excellent health and a remarkably cheerful disposition, making him a general favorite, especially among the young. Five children, two sons, Luther and George H., and three daughters, Mrs. A. N. Belnap, Mrs. G. C. Cooper and Miss Ora Gates, survive him, all living in Beaver except Mrs. Cooper, who is a resident of Spring, and all were present at his funeral. Two sons gave up their lives in the army. Within the sphere of his wide acquaintance he held the respect and esteem of all. He was passed away in more than the fullness of years, with his work well done and with a memory long to be treasured among those who can testify to his sturdiness of character and to the services which he has rendered. -- ********************************* Patricia Butterfield Vedner R.
