I thought some of you might find it interesting to see what was paid for items in my GGGrandfathers estate auction. Jacques Joseph PIE (pronounced Pee-ay) came to the United States in 1846 from Courfaivre, Switzerland which is close to the border with France and about 30 - 35 miles from Basel. With him was his married daughter, Marie Anne (Mary Ann), wife of Joseph Ferlin and his 5 remaining children: Eleanor (Later wife of Francis Anderhalt), Francois Joseph, Agustus (Justin) Joseph, Blair (Blawshaw/Blashan) Joseph, and Martin Jean. His wife, Marie Citherlet Pie had died prior to his emigration to Crawford County, PA. The surname evolved into Pee * Pees. However, as indicated by a hand drawn copy of his passport and his own signature on his will, it appears that the original spelling of the surname was PIC. A later biography of Justin Pie, his son, indicates that the family came up out of Italy in the 13th Century. After his death on either the 1st or 3rd of Aug 1852, his executors, Francis and Justin Pee held a public auction to resolve his estate. It is interesting to note that the Purchaser's names were listed. Perhaps some of you are related to these purchasers. On to the Auction: List of articles sold at a public vendue the 19th day of August 1852 being the pesonal property of Joseph Pee dec'd & sold by Francis Pee & Justin J. Pee Administrators of the estate. ________________________________________________________________________Articl es Sold Purchaser Amount___ One Clock Francis Pee $ 1.50 One Butcher Knife Justine Devillars .25 2 Hoes Justine Devillars .121/2 1 Dung Fork Justine Devillars .20 1 Spade John Messerall .621/2 1 Pitch Fork Joseph Ferley (couldthis be Ferlin?) .44 1 Hoe & Pitch Fork Isaac Kiser, Sr .25 2 Hoes Alexander Johnson, Esq .25 1 Axe Eleanor Pee .16 1 Dung Fork Joseph Money .31 2 Scythes & 3 Snaths Michael Schaffer .19 1 Scythe Michael Schaffer .59 1 Churn Justine Devillars .31 2 Scythes & Snath Susannah Monroe .20 1 Plough Francis Pee .32 1 Plough (tongs patent) Joseph Ferley 2.061/4 1 Armed Chair Eleanor Pee .51 1 Basket Michael Schaffer .18 1 Log Chain John Masseral, Jr 1.80 1 Peck measure Michael Schaffer .061/4 1 Ox Yoke, steepl & ring Peter Cuny .79 1/4 inch Augur Daniel Monroe .13 Augur & Pair of Shears Joseph Ferley .40 Plane & Augur Daniel Monroe .31 Chisels, Steeples, hooks etc J.R.
