I can't remember the exact reason but I think it was to join his father and family in Ohio. John Brown got around, lived several different places. I think he was born in upstate New York, moved to Ohio with his father as a child. One of his wives, second one I think, was from Crawford Co. At one time I took a bit of interested because during his Crawford period he lived about a half mile from my ancestors, near Townville - my 3ggm Elizabeth Perkins Crouch was widowed young and became a "tailoress" to support her children; she is said to have once mended John Brown's trousers. This was before he was famous of course. He lived in Crawford Co about 10 years as I recall, 1830s or thereabouts. I have a couple of books on him and can look up more if you are interested but it may take a couple of days, I am behind on everything right now. Jan
