My great grandfather, James Shannon is listed in the 1900 Census as residing in Athens Township and is renting.. Reference is made to Farm Schedule #251. If anyone has access to information regarding the location of this property and who the property owner was I would greatly appreciate it. I do have an 1876 map of Athens township with the property plots and the owners, but there is no indication of the farm schedule numbers. Thanks in advance. Wen Hayes Kent, Ohio
Wen: The 1876 atlas listed property owners. Your ancestor was a renter, so the 1876 atlas won't show it. The 1900 census--as all censuses--had lots of federal census tracts and districts. They have nothing to do with land ownership, and change from census to census, so there would be no connection between the 1876 atlas and the 1900 census. If you would make note of the people who are listed near him in the 1900 census, who own their farms, you might get lucky and find some who'd owned for 24 years and did show up in 1876.
