    1. NELSON Family Query: Emily NELSON, Robert W. NELSON
    2. Lisa Bail
    3. For five years, I have watched discussion about the Nelson family on this listserv, but have never been able to make a connection with my own research. Can anyone help? EMILY NELSON, my great-great grandmother, was born on May 11, 1849 and married ISRAEL TAYLOR GRAHAM in 1869. Emily Nelson Graham died on August 29, 1914, and Israel Taylor Graham died May 3, 1927. They are both buried in Conneautville Cemetery. From the 1850 Census, I believe that Emily Nelson was the daughter of ROBERT W. NELSON (b. 5/11/1849 in Pennsylvania) and Mary S. Fish (b. 1814 in New York). I recently obtained a copy of "History of Crawford County" from the mail-order loan library through the New England Historic and Genealogical Society, but unfortunately due to my limited knowledge of my Nelson family connection, it did not help my research. 3. Wanted to take a few minutes to apologize for not saying Thank You, sooner, to Pete, Todd and Kathy for their replies and help. The information was just what I was hoping for and more besides!! Between trying to get ahead at work and getting ready for the trip, I haven't had as much time to work on the family ties as I had hoped. I feel confident now that I can find the cemetery and stones with little problem. As far as getting to the library or courthouse, I doubt if time will work for me. We are staying in Meadville overnight but have a 7 hour trip ahead of us for that day. Any descendants of Robert (b ca 1773) and Ruth Bennett out there? South Shenango Township. If so please reply would like to ask a few questions. Thanks for the help and extraordinary effort! Kandi

Espyville is my family's hometown as well and I have ancestors buried in both the Espyville and Wilson cemeteries there. The index (alphabetical) of the Espyville Cemetery was published in the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Quarter (Pittsburgh, PA) in Vol. 6, No. 2 (Nov 1979), pp.76-109. I have a copy of it and of the Wilson Cemetery index. The indexes will tell you who is there, but not where. Before going, you might like to take a look at a late 19th century map of Espyville. I have reproduced it. Go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~petelois/index.htm, scroll to the bottom, and select "Espyville." I give you a "Tour" of Espyville. At Frame 8 you will be at the old Methodist Church, which is at the edge of the Espyville Cemetery. Suceeding frames take you to Cram Road and the Wilson Cemetery, and where the first home on the right, which has a trailer park built around it, was the Wilson house and was the Cram house when I last visited there. Frame 18 contains a map and index of residents of Espyville in the late 1800s. Enjoy the tour of Espyville. Be sure to supply up before getting there. No accommodations. Not even a traffic light. Talk about small. It has fewer residents and homes than in the 19th century. Luckily, the lake, built in the 1930s to supply industry in Pittsburgh with year round water, did not engulf the town. Also, I have embedded comments in your original message (above). Do you have a library card for the Delta County Library? If you answer yes to one of those questions then you probably would have permission to use the web site. If you answered no then in my opinion you are stealing. It appears from another message to this list that you can no longer access Heritage Quest from the libraries web page which implies that the library also thinks it is stealing and has restricted outside access. -- Robert Blair

    2. I have to put in my 2 cents worth here...........about going through a library to access Heritage Quest. Here in TX you can go there through the TX state library site, just using your local library's access code, which is freely given.........ALL it costs is for you to have a library card. Which is a lot cheaper than $35.00 a year. So ask your local library. Sharon

    3. If your local library has a subscription to it, yes, that will work. There's two differences in the situation. The Godfrey Library is a private library, I believe. Not a small local library. And it specializes in local histories from all over the country and even the world, though mostly the international histories are British. I have seen French and Spanish language books there, also. Secondly, it would be free or almost so if you live in CT. I live in CA. And my local library does not have a subscription. So, Godfrey works just fine for me. It's a good idea to check your local libraries--it's very possible you can get HQ for free with a card. But, short of that, Godfrey is a terrific on line source. 3. Jeffrey, Heritage Quest is something that the library pays to subscribe to. It's for library members only, as it should be. In fact, it's probably part of their contract with HQ that it not be free except for in-library use. This is not the first time that someone has found a way to access some library's database through a flaw in their website. In the past, the flaw has been found quickly and then the free ride ends. As much as I wish we could all access this stuff for free all the time, that isn't the case. It's expensive to get and maintain the system and servers and to get the stuff for us to access. I expect to pay something for that. And $35/year is so cheap, it's incredible that we can get access for that. I'm just thankful. Just as I'm thankful for the countless times that someone on a list such as this has given generous help--for free. You can consider it ok or theft, whichever your conscience tells you. Either way, it will probably be coming to an end soon. 3. I agree. My public library offers Heritage Quest to its card holders, and you can obtain a card (if you do not live in my county) for 35.00 a year. This is SO much cheaper than Ancestry.com, and they have census indexes that Ancestry doesn't have. My library requires your library card number to enter the Heritage site, which is as it should be. It costs the library money (the amount depending on the usage) to have that available for their customers. If you are not a member of the library do not use it with out joining the library. Other people have done this to other libraries and those libraries have restricted the access to only the computers in the library which hurts a lot of their members because they can no longer access the web site from home. We do not need to steal time on other peoples facilities as this only gives us a bad name. If we don't pay our own way, because these web sites cost a lot of money, we will loose access to a lot more. That said you can join the Godfrey Memorial Library which has access for only 35.00 dollars a year. 3. Yes. The URL is www.godfrey.org. It's a wonderful resource and for only $35 per year, and incredible bargain. Take a look at what 's available there--which they still continue to expand. I'd much rather support a library. And NOT support the big on-line genealogy database monopoly. 3. Are you kidding me? If using a Web site is considered "stealing" where you are from, I truly hope I never visit that deep, dark corner of the world. 3. I joined Godfrey Library (in CT) last year and access their resources on a daily basis. They provide a wonderful resource at an affordable cost. Plus, I feel like my small payment helps them continue to obtain other genealogical resources to help others! Barb
