    1. [PACRAWFO-L] German emigration
    2. I just wanted to Thank everyone for the response on the Stokes line and mention a book that I recently found that was helpful regarding German descendants . The Saeger and Graff family's of the Saegertown area originally started off in the North Alsace region before emigrating to the Lehigh Co.- Egypt area. A great book is- 18th. Century Emigrants from North Alsace to America by Annette Kunselman Burgert 974.8004 The book has maps of the area plus additional references to both American and European records in regards to emigrants from that region. So if you find that your relatives came circa 1825's to the Saegertown area ...they may have been with the German group from Lehigh Co. with Daniel Saeger, S. Balliet and the Graff's. 1. [PACRAWFO-L] Stoke/Stokes genealogy and Venango Cemetery
    2. Hello fellow Stoke/Stokes researchers. Enclosed is a census index breakdown for the family in PA. I would like to know if anyone has answers to the following: 1. Does anyone have an cemetery index to whom is buried in the Venango Twsp. Cemetery- regarding the Stokes ? I know that Frederick and Sarah Stokes , Lovinia Stokes Muckinhaupt are there..but is anyone else ? 2. Somewhere along the line I had the information that a John ( son of George ) and Margaret nee Peters Stokes settled in Venango Twsp. in 1804 from Union County , Pa. It was stated that they had 12 children. John was b. 1780 d. 10 June 1861 at age 81. Margaret b. 1780 d. 27 January 1876 at age 96. Does anyone have the obits - from the newspaper and /or other sources on these people. I would like to know the name of their children. I also had listed a Elizabeth Stokes who married a David Fullerton in 1847. 3. The census index indicates the first group being in Crawford Co. area in the 1830- John , Jacob and George.. no John is showing up there in the 1810 or 1820 census index. 4. My branch is the Frederick Stokes- and his death cert stated place of birth as Venango Co. in 1820...so maybe they were there and missed showing up on the 1820 census. 5. It was also stated by another researcher that they came from Germany..possibly with the Graff family--the Graff's came from Northern Alsace- Kuhlendorf...anyone have any data on that ? Sincerely, Kathleen Whelpley aka lucy@cet.com

    2. Theuriet
    3. Hi Annette: Thanks for the "Greeting". Yes, still working on the MCDILL family. Anna is the last link to find. Theuriet family was put on hold for awhile. Kept running into dead ends. No fun! Will pick it up again after the first of the year, maybe. California has been beautiful with lovely fall weather. Going into a bit of a cold spell now but look for warm weather again next week. Hope you are doing well. Sorry not to have written but have been working on my mother's side of the family since last September. Just had a family reunion in Pittsburgh and all but one family was there. What a job but well worth it. Nice to know I can e-mail you. :-) (happy face) Fondly, Carol

    3. The 1840 Federal Census included a special inquiry regarding pensioners for Revolutionary or military service. This section named persons who were either family heads or members and specified the pensioner's age, not just a range of ages. The results were summarized in Census of Pensioners: Revolutionary or Miliitary Services...(Washington, D.C: Blair and Rives, 1841). The film is Roll 3 of the National Archives Microfilm T498. Here is another resource to use in tracing your revolutionary war pensioner! Barb

    3. This cemetery is located at Coon's Corners, Hayfield Township, Crawford Co., PA. Going west on Route 198, pass Coon's Corners and take the next dirt road running north. "It was opened prior to 1810 which is the earliest date on stones now there. It is part of the original James Dunn farm. James Dunn and his half-brother, Philip Dunn, came into the region about 1795. Both fought in the revolution, were first settlers and are buried in the cemtery. They came from Piscaraway, New Jersey. The early graves were usually marked by rough stones and were mainly on top of the hill to the east. They are remembered by the present President of the Association, but have been removed. The present road was private until late in the last century. On February 24th, 1877, the application and order of court for the Dunn Cemetery Association were filed and recorded in Crawford County Agreement Book "C" at page 159. The thirty-eight (38) applicants, practically without exception, became lot owners. Some of the earlier lot owners were granted deeds but many were "squatters" in this novel sense. The three who took the oath for the application were: Thomas H. Dunn, Charles Burns and Henry Deeter...The present seven maple trees in front were planted May 7th, 1883...The south side and rear were American chestnut ....In the early days the fence was wood. In 1898 it was decided "to place hitching posts in front of the cemetery".... The present fence, consisting of steel posts in concrete with wire on the sides and back and wood in front, was built in 1950....The cemetery is deep in the country and has a well and facilities for those who wish to visit, work there and have picnic suppers.... The original cemetery deed was given by Walter G. Dunn and his wife, Polly M. Dunn, in 1877. It is part of the original James Dunn Farm and Walter was his grandson. The records show Polly was buried New Year's Eve in 1882 and that Walter left early in 1883 for the West. In 1912 the part on the north was purchased for $34.00 and in 1949 Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Price, not only donated a piece on the rear (east) but also gave an easement on the south which will make an attractive entrance through trees now planted. An up-to-date map was drawn in 1950. Of possible interest is the history of the sexton. At first he received $1.50 for a grave up to four feet long and $2.50 for others. The prce went up very gradually. By 1916 the minutes read significantly "nobody wanted sexton" and the present practice is to have the funeral director make arrangements. There is no maintenance fund worthy of the name. But there is considerable interest and annual picnics are held late in August at which some definite job is undertaken. There is probably no system of maintenance so desirable as some organization among "those who care". The cemetery is now being used for the sixth generation by some families. Our President, Mr. Thomas R. Deeter, tells me his children will be the sixth generation, that is: Thomas is the son of Forest, son of Fred, son of Michael, and son of John who first came over from the "old country". My own family stems from the original Hugh Dunn who went to Dover, New Hampshire, before 1640, and moved to Piscatawy, New Jersey....James and Philip Dunn were the sons of Jeremiah and their background includes such familiar early family names as Martin, Langstaff, Hull, Drake, Bonham, Dunham, Roberts and the three Mayflower Fullers....T. P. Dunn" There is an index on file at the Crawford County Historical Society in Meadville along with the rest of this description. Bill: George Dearborn died 25 September 1864 age 57y11m12d Dearborn, Walter D. born 1839 and died 1906 Dearborn, Cordella E. born 1842 and died 1926 (NOTE: Bill got in touch with me and asked about this cemetery; this is his response) -- ********************************* Pat Butterfield Vedner Conneautville, PA 16406 http://www.toolcity.net/~vedner

    3. MCDILL - MALONEY - MCCANDLESS - NORTHROP - GLEEN I am trying to find the maiden name of Anna MCDILL who was married to Hugh MCDILL. Anna was born in 1792 and died in 1875. She is buried with her husband in Black Ash Cemetery, Crawford Co., PA. Hugh and Anna had 10 children. John 1808-1886, Mary 1810-1888, Hugh 1812-1888 m. Mary Ann GLENN, Anna 1815-1877 m. John MCCANDLESS, James 1818-1894 m. Elizabeth Jane NORTHROP, Elizabeth 1821-1859, William 1824-1858, Lucetta 1827-1836, Nancy 1831-1836 and Harvey 1833-1836. At one time it was believed that Anna might have been the daughter of Daniel MALONEY who was a native of Ireland. He came to Crawford Co. in 1797 from Westmoreland County. His grandson Hiram A. MALONEY and son James MALONEY are mentioned in Biographical Sketches - Conneaut Township. James was a farmer in Mead Township all his life. Could James have been Anna's brother? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Carol McDill-Theuriet theuriet@lodinet.com
