Barb: I spent some time looking over " The Saeger Family " by Elizabeth Saeger Daniel and she does mention the following- The name Saeger / Sager / Seeger appears occasionally in old records of Germany and Switzerland. Conrad Sager of Zug, Switzerland, was killed by Austrians on a precipice in 1388. Burki Sager was a councillor in Bern in 1402, and John Sager was Governor of Arberg in 1553. Tradition also indicates that a member of the family was knighted Feriherrin von Seager of Seagersberg in the Austrian Tyrol. The Johan Nicholas Saeger family ( that relocated to Lehigh Co., PA ) came from - Brandau, Odenwald section, Starkenburg, of Hessen Darmstadt, Germany. lucy@cet.com
To Patricia H. Roberts and other Peters researchers: >Sometime when you have time, please send me data on the following >individuals (all last named PETERS) >Catherine Muckinhoupt >Charles H. >Henry >Jacob Jr. >Jacob Sr. >Levi (if different from that included in the Adam PETERS paragraph, p. 688) Here is the information I found on the above people for you: Catherine Muckinhoupt on page 850: "John Muckinhoupt, farmer, PO Venango, was born in Cambridge Township, this county, March 19, 1819, and is a son of George and Margaret (Himebaugh) Muckinhoupt. George and his father, Philip, a native of Germany, were among the early settlers of Cambridge Township, this county. Our subject married, September 20, 1843, Margaret, daughter of Henry and Catherine (Muckinhoupt) PETERS, of Cussewago Township, this county. The next year they settled where they now reside and cleared from the wilderness a farm of 110 acres. Their children are Geroge H., John A., Morgan D., Mrs. Emma Payne, Frank, Mrs. Maggie Peters and Mellie. Mr. and Mrs. Muckinhoput are members of the First Lutheran Church of Venango. In politics he is a Democrat." Charles H. Peters appears on page 883: "Levi Peters, farmer, PO Saegerstown, was born in what is now Hayfield Township, this county, January 16, 1821; son of Jacob Jr. and May (Siverling) PETERS. His paaternal grandfather was Jacob Peters Sr. who settled in Venango Township, this county, in 1804; afaterward located in Hayfield Township, where he died. His maternal grandfather was Christopher Siverling, who settled in Venango Township in 1796. Jacob Jr. had ten children: Samuel, in Erie County; George (deceased); Lydia (deceased); Saloma (Mrs. Peter Smith); Levi; John; David, in Oregon; Caroline (Mrs. George Kleckner); Jacob, and Edward (deceased). Our subject was married January 16, 1842, to Eliza, duaghter of John and Sarah (Graft) Liephart, of Hayfield Township, this county. Mr. Peters has seven children, seventeen grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and there has never been a death among his descendants up to May, 1884. His children are Lydia A. (Mrs. Stephen Woodring), Sarah A. (Mrs. John Flick), Francis, Charles H. Augusta (Mrs. Jacob Flesicher), Tamzen (Mrs. Morgan Muckenhoput), and Preston. Mr. Peters has been Surpervisor and School Director of his township; in politics is a Democrat." on pages 1119 and 1120 I found: "Theodore D. Kleckner, proprietor of the Kleckner House, PO Venango, was born in Venango Township, this county, February 16, 1847, and is the only child of George and Caroline (PETERS) Kleckner, who always resided in this township. His paternal grandfather was John Kleckner, a nataive of eastern Pennsylvania, and an early settler of Venango Township, this county. From 1838 to 1853 Venango Borough was known as Klecknerville, John Kleckner having bought a portion of the property in 1832 and a mill that had been erected thereon and caused an official survey to be made of the town plot. This gave the place a name, but at the time of its incorporation, in 1853, it received its present title. John Kleckner had eleven children: Daniel, Matthias, George, Joseph, Anthony, Philip, John, Barbara, Sally, Anna and Elizabeth. The maternal grandfather of our subject was Jacob PETERS (see sketch of Levi Peters, Hayfield Township,) who settled in this county in 1804. George Kleckner, in early life, was proprietor of the grist-mill, saw-mill, and woolen factory, which he conducted for many years. Since 1861 he has been principally engaged in farming. Our subject was reared in Venango Township, where he has always resided, and was educated in the common schools. In 1874 he embarked in the livery business, in which he was engaged up to 1878. He then engaged in the sale of agricultureal implements, buggies, etc., and in the spring of 1882 embarked in his present business. He was married, April 23, 1875, to Almira, daughter of Oliver and Rebecca (Peiffer) Barrett, of Venango Township, this county, by whom he has two children: Cora B. and Walter C. Mr. Kleckner is proprietor of the leading hotel in Venango, and is a representative citizen, a genial, jovial gentleman, widely known as a model landlord, and well adapted to his present occupation. He is a member of the K. of P. In politics he is a Republican." >Do you by any chance know if the book (Hist of Crawford Co 1865) is >available for sale? I'm dealing with the PETERS(es) in two counties - >Venango and Crawford. Know that Venango reprinted their 1890 Hist of >Venango Co. and recently bought myself a copy for my birthday! No, I don't know for sure if the book is still available, but I will check and get back to you on this! Does anyone else out there know if it's still available? Hope this info helped! To PAULA1941@aol.com: >Could someone tell me where I can get a copy of " The History of Crawford >County" that everyone talks about all the time. I' m new to this stuff and >need some help. Paula, I know the book was republished at some time, but I'm not sure where you can purchase a copy - I'll check around and see what I can find out for you. My copy is the orginal printing from 1885 but I have seen some of the newer versions and they are printed as 2 volumes instead of one large one. >Dr. James A. Sterlingb.1822 d.1881 The only reference I found for a James Sterling in the "History of Crawford County" is on page 659 under the history of Summerhill Township. The paragraph his name appears in follows: "James McDowell is reputed the pioneer settler, coming about 1796 or 1797. He was of Scotch extraction, came from the region of the Susquehanna, and remained a life-long resident on his farm on the Conneaut, below Dicksonburg. He had five sons and two daughters, and many of their descendants are yet in the township. Daniel Myers came from the same locality about the same time and settled on the adjoining tract, near the center of the township, surveyed in the name of A. Power. He was killed while on his way home from Harmonsburg by being thrown from his horse. John STERLING, an old neighbor, soon followed to the new country, and his sons, James, Washington and Andrew became well-known property-holders. James Fetterman settled on the John Power tract, about one and a half miles southeast from Conneautville, where he remained till death in old age and where his descendants now reside. He at one time owned 1,100 acres of land. He came a young, unmarried man, and in 1798 wedded Betsy McDowell; this was the first marriage in the township." >Elizabeth (Betsy) Rider b. 1822 e. 1896 >James A. Sterling b. 1858 d.1934 >Irene Newbury b. 1863 d. 1881 >Ella Fisher Davenport b. 1862 d. 1937 I found no mention of the above persons in that particular reference. I will check into those names further for you and will get back to you as soon as I have any details. It may take a short while, seem to have a minor backlog of out-of-house research! Later they had a farm on Elizabeth Island. ( which might explain how the eldest son Nathaniel, happened to be married on Nantucket Island in 1756) A deed in dated 13 Sept. 1758 shows that Jonathan GRINNELL, cordwainer, of Elizabeth Island, bought land at Tiverton, R.I. Here are the parents of Gideon GRINNELL; father of Benjamin; father of Morris GRINNELL. Nathaniel GRINNELL b. 9 Nov. 1735 at Little Compton, Rhode Island; died: 17 June 1829 at R.I. or N.Y. or Ma. He married Ruth CLARK Oct 1756 at Nantucket, Mass. They had 5 known children: 1. Phebe GRINNELL b. 6 March 1759 R.I. married a Mr. EBER, she died : 12 May 1847. 2. John GRINNELL b. 30 April 1773 d. 28 March 1828 Nathaniel married 2nd Elizabeth________. She was born bef. 1755. Elizabeth died 1813 at N.Y. His family moved to Elizabeth Island when he was young and in 1758 returned to the mainland at Tiverton, where he was a weaver by trade. Two wedding dates are listed on microfilms of local town records in the posession of the LDS Church, 1st 11 Sept. 1756, which is probably the date of their intentions. The 2nd dated given is 1 Oct. 1756. Nathaniel had served in the Revolutionary War as a private in Capt. Daniel VAUGHN's Company of the Rhode Island Militai (24 Dec. 1777 to 24 feb. 1778). It is said that he had bad feet, but was able to ride a horse. In 1790, Nathaniel and his son Gideon ( 1767) are shown as living in Berkshire Co., (Richmaond) Mass. A deed of sale in Tiverton, dated 1780, makes it appear that they moved about that time. According to one family record, nathaniel and John (1773) moved in 1796 to the town of farmington, Ontario Co., N.Y. and yet later moved to Tioga Co., N.Y. to be with son Gideon. GOD BLESS!!!!!!!! Gideon married Abigail reportedly of Farmington, but more likely of Lanesboro, Mass, around 1790. It is stated that in the later part of 1810, Gideon moved to Tioga Co., N.Y. but the above 72 acres were deeded by Gideon "of Farmington" to Timothy ALLEN on the 15 Nov. 1813. Hi: Here's a little Steadman, etc. history. >From Western Pennsylvania, 1915 pg. 1402-1404 II John Garner Steadman, son of James Steadman, was born in Tioga County, NY, in Nov, 1807, and died in October, 1883. He grew up in the state of NY, assisting his father in the pioneer work connected with the farm, and at the age of eighteen years came to Crawford Co, Pa. , where he worked as a farm hand. Not long afterwards he married, and then rented a farm, which he cultivated for a time. In 1835, he was living in Tioga county, NY, but returned to Crawford county, where he located in East Fallowfield township. In 1843 he purchased a fifty acre farm there, this being heavily wooded land. In order to make the first payment for this land, he drove two steers through the town of Greenville, Pa., and sold them for fifteen dollars. He could only get five dollars in cash, the remainder being taken in the form of groceries and other commodities. He walked home, then to Meadville Pa., where he secured the deed for his property, paying the five dollars as security on it, and then walked back to his home. With the assistance of his sons he errected a log house, and commenced to clear the ground with a view to cultivation. This was done by cutting the timber, and burning it as was the fashion of that time. He lived on this place until within four years of his death, when he moved to a farm near Geneva, Pa., in Greenwood twp, and there spent the remainder of his life. He and his wife were active and devout members of the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he was class leader for many years.. Mr. Steadman married Catherine Gross, born near Beaver Dam, Crawford county, Pa., March 2, 1812, died March 10, 1895. Children: 1. Kinsley, deceased, was a Civil War veteran. 2. Earl, deceased, was a Civil War veteran. 3. Dow, of further mention. 4. Wesley, born July 31, 1838; is now living retired in Geneva, Pa. 5. Nelson, living on a farm in Arkansas, a Civil War veteran, who spent several months in Libby Prison. 6. Eliza, married Hiram Bedow, lives in Geneva, Pa. 7. Lester, deceased, was a Civil War Veteran. 8. Perry, born November 12, 1845, died in 1907; he owned and lived on various farms in Greenwood township; he married Rachael Grinnell, who afterwards married his brother Dow; children: Inez, married Silas Williams, now deceased, and lives in Greenwood township; Elsie, married Park Bailey, lives on a farm in Brookfield, Ohio; Pearl, married Harry Shadley, a machinist, and lives in Youngstown, Ohio. 9. John, deceased. (III) Dow Steadman, son of John Garner and Catherine (Gross) Steadman, was born in Tioga county, New York, Oct 9, 1835. He grew up in Greenwood township, Crawford county, Pa., and what little education he was able to obtain was acquired at the Finley District School, which was more than two miles from his home. His opportunities, however, were limited, as he was obliged to devote the greater part of his time at the homestead farm until his eighteenth year. He then left his home, and spent three years in learning the wagon making trade, under Thomas McDowell, one mile east of Atlantic, Pa. After his first marriage he purchased a farm in the woods of Randolph township, and when he had this cleared, he sold it with a satisfactory profit. He at once repeated this operation, netting a considerable sum by the sale of the second farm also. Feb 1, 1864, he enlisted in Company B, Eighteenth Pa. Cavalry, and served one year and three months. During the greater part of this time he was located at Harper's Ferry, and he participated in many of the engagements with the Confederate forces under General Early. At the close of the war he was in the hospital, and when he was discharged he returned to Randolph township, and bought a farm on the Oil Creek road, where he lived several years. He then moved to Adams county, Neb., and bought a farm there which he is still holding; he took up a claim in Chase county, Kansas, proved it, and returned to Nebraska, where he made his home until 1909. When he first went there he purchased eighty acres for four hundred dollars, and when he left he sold this land for five thousand dollars. He carried on general farming in Adams county. In 1909 he sold out and retired, and bought a house in Geneva, Crawford county, Pa., where he now lives. In political matters he is Republican. At the age of fifteen years he joined the Methodist Episcopal church, and has served as steward, class leader and trustee. Since coming to Geneva he joined the United Brethren church. Mr. Steadman married (first) Rachel Ralya, born in the old Block House in Meadville, Pa., in 1826, died August 18, 1908, a daughter of John Ralya, a farmer, of German descent. He married (second) April 29, 1909, Mrs. Rachael (Grinnell) Steadman, born Oct 3, 1853, widow of his brother Perry. Children: 1. Clara, married Ezra Reese, both deceased. 2. Nancy, married I.C. Warren, both deceased. 3. Ida, married Jason Dumas, a boiler maker, lives at Hastings, Nebraska. 4. Elmer M., a state evangelist, lives in Denver, Colorado: married Mary Garris. The paternal grandparents of Mrs. Rachael (Grinnell) (Steadman) Steadman, were born in the state of New York, at what is known as Grinnell's Corners. One of their sons, John Grinnell, served in the War of 1812. Another son was Benjamin, of further mention.
