We have 4 large scrapbooks filled with obits, weddings, etc., at the Linesville Historical Society and I found the following Creggs and Seagers listed, thought I would share with you and others on the list who may be interested: "CHURCHILL-CREGG: In the Argyle House parlor, May 27th, 1892, by Rev. J.A. Klucker, Mr. Geo. W. Churchill of Union City, Pa., and Miss Meda Cregg of Linesville." "CREGG-LITWILER: By Rev. J.A. Klucker in the Baptist parsonage, Jan. 28, 1892, William H. Cregg and Miss Melva Litwiler, both of Linesville." "CREGG-GLANCY: In Pine township, Mar. 8, 1899, by George P. White, Esq., John A. Cregg and Miss Nellie Glancy, both of Pine township." "John Cregg died December 7, 1904, of pneumonia. He was 24 years, 4 months and 11 days. He was born in Linesville; leaves a wife and child. The funeral took place in the M.E. church Friday at 2 o'clock, Rev. Gillett officiating. Deceased was a member of the Junior Order and had been out of health for months; was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Cregg, brothers Wm. and Milo of Albion, sister Mrs. W.T. Mackay, and Leon and Lena at home." "Wm. D. Seager was killed at Conneaut, O., June 28, 1905, by a Lake Shore flyer. His remains, accompanied by his cousins, Perry Seager and Thos. Craig, and a friend, William Dalrymple, were brought to the home of his nephew, F.E. Lyman, that evening and his funeral, conducted by Rev. Palmer, was held Thursday morning at 11 a.m. with Miss A.A. Seager, of Mecca, O., is the only remaining one of the family. Mr. Seager was 53 years, 3 months and 23 days old, and although odd and eccentric, had many friends." "CREGG-DeROSS: Miss Lena Cregg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Cregg, was married to Delvin DeRoss of Meadville, Jan. 15, 1917, Rev. Shantz of Erie, officiating." Hope you found these of interest! Hi there , have been on the list a while and although I have not learned much about my Morris group I have learned that Clarion County is close by and that everyone moved around...therefore I have this lengthy post that may help some..I know some of these folks were in Meadvi;lle from other letters''' October 16 ,1998 Alsbaugh Family and More: I found this information in some old note books probably written by my great Aunt Della Mae Morris (also known as Vanessa), or by my grandmother Zeta Laurine Morris Necco (Nicco). In all instances the letters are written to or referring to Amelia Vandalia Alsbaugh Morris my great grandmother Letters to her from my great grandfather , John Benson Morris, are adressed to Della. As you are all aware the 1800 to early 1900 folks changed their names around and this often makes them hard to track. I have not validated any of this as I really have not worked on the line. I am posting it since there are quite a few names and we all might benefit from having it viewable. Possibly we will all make some connections. Sandy (slschroe@intrepid.net) I found several listings for Roderick Frazier in the "History of Crawford County, Pa, 1885." On pages 385 and 386, in the section telling about the history of Meadville: "Roderick FRAZIER was running a tannery on the corner of Plum and Steers' Alleys, and also carried on a boot and shoe factory on North Main Street, and the Pattersons - John and Joseph - had two tanneries, the former in the southeast suburb of the town, and the latter on Mill Run, west of Water Street." on page 436, also in the section about Meadville's history: "Philip Leighty established a tannery during the War of 1812-15, on the corner of Plum and Steer's Alley, which he carried on until 1826, when Roderick FRAZIER bought the yard. He ran the tannery until his death in June 1852, and his widow conducted the business for a couple of years afterward, then closed the yard." on page 439, also in the section about Meadville's history: "Roderick FRAZIER erected a grist-mill near Mill Run, in the eastern part of Meadville, in 1850-51, and with David Morris ran it until his death in June, 1852. It was then leased to Jonathan David, who was succeeded by David Morris. The mill was afterward carried on by MRS. FRAZIER, and after some ten or twelve years' operation altogether it was closed, and subsequently burned down." on page 560, in the section about the history of Hayfield Township: "Near the southeast corner of the township, Roderick FRAZIER had located a tract on French Creek as early as 1793. He was a Scotchman, a bachelor, and was in the English service at the fall of Quebec. After remaining at Meadville a year or two, in 1796 he took possession of his land, and remained there till death, living o the age of over one hundred years. Roderick FRAZIER, second, no kin to the above, was also a Scotchman from near Inverness. He was a British soldier during the Revolution but deserted to the American side. In 1806 he came to this township and settled on the tract of Roderick FRAZIER, first, supporting the old man in his advanced life and purchasing the tract, a part of which his descendants yet own." on page 562, also in the section on the history of Hayfield Township: "In 1814 James Dickson and William Gill both started distilleries, which had a capacity of about four bushes of rye per day. Roderick FRAZIER and others also operated stills, for the demand for whisky was great." on page 563, also in the section on the history of Hayfield Township: "Near Black's Corners, on the farm of Roderick Frazier, stands a Wesleyan Methodist frame church, erected about 1849. Among the early members of the society that worships here were: David Jones, Esack Jones, Samuel Marsh, Andrew Ikler and Appleton Blakeley. The membership is now reduced to six or eight, but the society, with commendable zeal, still maintains services." on page 739 - in the Biographical Sketch section for Meadville: "James F. FRAZIER, druggist, Meadville, was born in Meadville, May 16, 1847, son of Roderick and Mary (Morris) FRAZIER. The former, a native of Chester County, Penn., of Scotch descent, born May 2, 1802, came to Meadville with his parents in 1806, and here learned the tanner's trade and carried on a tannery for many years. He also manufactured boots and shoes, and carried on a meat market, conducting all three businesses contemporaneously, besides, in later life, owning and operating a flour-mill, thus proving him to have been an energetic, active and useful business man in the early days. Mr. FRAZIER died in 1852. His family consisted of seven children, four of whom are now residents of Meadville. His wife was of Welsh descent, and came with her parents to Meadville in 1815. Her father, a farmer, was a native of New York. She died in 1856." on pages 876 and 877, in the Biographical sketch section for Hayfield Twp: "John Hartman, farmer, PO Meadville, was born in Vernon Township, October 26, 1822, and is a son of John J. and Barbara (Marsh) Hartman, who settled in Vernon Township, this county, about 1810, clearing up a farm there, and afterward removed to Hayfield Township, locating on the farm now owned by David Seavy, which they cleared and improved, and where they lived and died. They were natives of Switzerland, and had the following children: Barbara (Mrs. Joshua Ware), Catherine (Mrs. S. Shoup), Jacob (deceased), John, Henry, Samuel (deceased), Elizabeth (Mrs. Joseph Baker), Abraham, and Mary (Mrs. Roderick FRAZIER). Our subject came to Hayfield Township with his parents in 1830, and was married September 16, 1845, to Julia A., daughter of Conrad and Mary (Renner) Bachman, early settlers of Woodcock Township, this county. By this union there are eleven children: Mary (Mrs. A. Rice), Sadie, Samuel, Christiana (Mrs. Owen Powell), Emma, William, Tama (Mrs. E. Minnis), Minnie, Jennie; Alvin L. and Edgar (twins). Mr. Hartman has resided on his farm since 1840, which he has cleared and made all the improvements thereon. He and his wife are members of the Reformed Church. He has held nearly all the offices in the gift of his township; in politics is a Democrat." on page 890, also in the Hayfield Twp Biographical Sketches: "Reading Wilson, farmer and blacksmith, PO Meadville, was born in Bucks County, Penn., October 6, 1823, son of John and Betsy (Himelwright) Wilson, who settled in Meadville, this county, in 1826, and in 1827, removed to Woodcock Township, this county, and settled on the farm now occupied by the widow of Francis Wilson, which they cleared and improved, and where John Wilson died in 1848 at the age of sixty-nine. Our subject resided in Woodcock Township until eighteen years of age, and then went to Meadville to learn the blacksmith's trade, at which he worked three years there. He then located in McGuffintown, in Hayfield Township, and opened a blacksmith shop, where he has worked at his trade up to the present time. In 1849 he purchased the farm, where he now resides, of his brother-in-law, John H. Culbertson, which he has since that time carried on in connection with his other business. Our subject was married March 22, 1849 to Catherine G., daughter of Robert and Alice (FRAZIER) Dickson, former a native of Scotland, and a son of James Dickson, generally known as "Scotch Jimmie," who first came to Meadville in 1793, settled in Meadville in 1794, and then on to the farm now owned by our subject in 1796. On reaching Meadville Robert Dickson was enrolled in the militia and performed military duty with the men when but nine years of age, serving with credit to himself and danger to the redskins. For this service he was afterward awarded a State pension. Then in 1811 he was commissioned by Gov. Simon Snyder for four years Lieutenant of the first company of the One Hundred and Thirty-Seventh Regiment of the millitary of Pennsylvania in the First Brigade of the Sixteenth Division, composed of the militia of the counties of Beaver, Butler, Mercer, Crawford, Erie, Venango and Warren. He took part in the War of 1812 and for patriotic services in that struggle was given a United States pension. After which he lived for over three-quarters of a century. He was regarded as a man of strict integrity, highly esteemed and respected by his neighbors. He died in the ninetieth year of his age. Mrs. Wilson's maternal grandfather was Roderick FRAZIER, a native of Scotland, who served in the British Army under Cornwallis, and after the close of the war located in Carlisle, Penn; in 1806 settled in Hayfield Township, this county, where he died at the age of seventy-five. Our subject by his marriage has had five children: Alice E. (deceased), Kate E. (Mrs. J.C. Dickson), Wanda A.E. (deceased), J.R. Eugene (deceased) and William H. Mr. Wilson has served his township as School Director. In politics he is a Republican." Hope one of these Roderick Fraziers' is one you're looking for! Hi Everybody: For those that have e-mailed me regarding an address for the Discharge papers: I would suggest writing to the: Crawford County Court House Register of Wills/Recorder of Deeds Office c/o Mrs. Rebecca Jordan, Register & Recorder 903 Diamond Park Meadville, Pa. 16335 (814) 333-7411 I would assume they are still in the Recorders Office. I see in the telephone book there is a Veteran Services located in the Courthouse & their telephone number is (814) 333-7314. I have no idea what the charge would be for requesting papers. Good Luck! Good Morning Kathy: Thanks so much for the obit on Bertie Craig. He could very well be a nephew. Great Grandpa George W. Cregg had a brother by the name of John. John and his wife Jane are mentioned in grandpa's Civil War pension papers. It states in an affidavit, they were all friends from childhood and all lived in the same neighborhood. It also states John is the brother of George and he and Jane stood up for George at his wedding which took place at the Linesville Methodist Ch., mrd. by Rev. L. Heard, 17th day of April, 1872. Gr Grandma Cregg's name was Isabell Brandon Briggs, not Anna. It's been a long time since I have worked on the Cregg line. Anna was their daughter, my grandma. If you would like family history (what I have so far) on the Creggs for your records at the society, I would be glad to send them to you. The name Bullis is also in the family line; I believe Anna was mrd. to a Bullis but I have not found out as yet when. Anna was then married to my Grandfather, Frank Herman Rider. I don't know if this Bullis died or if they got divorced. Anyway, Dad (John H. Rider) had two stepsisters, Mabel Bullis and Bessie. Wasn't there a Bullis family that had a big celery farm there in Linesville? Seems to me I heard that somewhere. Thanks again Kathy for the obit. If I can be of help from the Lorain Co. OH area, please let me know as I am also a volunteer at the historical society. What would they do without us???? Jan

To Jan Brooks (jan@kellnet.com) I am sorry, but I did not find any Creggs (Craigs, etc.) in the "History of Crawford County, Pa. 1885." I do have a copy of an obituary, though, for a Bertie "Craig" from Linesville - copy of the obit follows. Don't know if this is someone you are looking for or not - but here it is! Craig, Bertie died August 13, 1883 Another case of "didn't know it was loaded" happened in our midst. Thursday morning, the two young boys of John Craig's, Willie and Bertie, were fooling with a loaded gun when it was accidentally discharged in the hands of Willie, the charge entering the cheek of Bertie and coming out the back of his head. He lived but a short time after being shot. Both boys supposed the gun to be empty. People should profit by this warning. It is dangerous to have a loaded gun around the house where there are children, and equally dangerous to allow young boys to use firearms. It is much better to be cautious before some one is killed or wounded than afterwards. The friends of the bereaved have the sympathy of the community. - Linesville Herald August 18, 1883; page 3, column 1 Kathy Brubaker Volunteer Genealogist Linesville Historical Society kbrbkr@toolcity.net -----Original Message----- From: Jan Brooks <jan@kellnet.com> To: kbrbkr@toolcity.net <kbrbkr@toolcity.net> Date: Tuesday, October 13, 1998 7:31 AM Subject: Creggs >Good Morning: > >Are there any Creggs listed in your 1885 History of Crawford Co. book? Lucy, Thanks for clearing up that muddle. Guess I'll have to look elsewhere for Seager connections... Now I'm off to look for that book. Kathy, I am doing research from California on the HAMMON family of Conneautville, Crawford County. I was wondering if there is any info on this family in the History of Crawford County, 1885? Our direct descendant is Marshall Miron HAMMON (1813-1881) married to Harriet Sophia COOPER. They arrived in Conneautville approximately 1845. Harriet's father Silas and her brother William Page COOPER came at the same time. Marshall and Harriet had 4 children who lived to adulthood. France Emiline(1851), Ellen(1848), Wendell P(1855). and Edwin W. (1849). The last three came to California in the 1870s. Ellen married a Daniel Derby of Conneautville. Marshall's brother Daniel and his family were also in the County. One the brothers, Hiram married into the Power family. Any information will be greatly appreciated. > >From the tranquility of Fanstamagloriana Roberta & John Hammon -----------------------------------------------
