p. 13 INTRODUCTORY THOUGHTS Many a visit in childhood and youth, accompanied by my twin brother, have I made to the old homestead of my grandfather, Robert Morehead, Sr., now owned by his son, Robert Morehead, Jr., in Vernon Township, about four miles west of Meadville, on State Rd. And I also remember with pleasure our visits to "Uncle" James Fergerson and family. Sometimes in May or June, when fishing season was in its glory, as we boys used to view things, we would be there and make two of a party, occasionally going to Conneaut Lake for a day's fishing. In this connection I would say that some of my relatives living west of Meadville, like my uncle, george Roudebush, of Blooming Valley, were noted fishermen, a compliment they have long merited. p. 14 Here he is talking about maple syrup time This year (1888) I am carrying on the work alone, as it is not so extensive as in former days. At one time there were several camps on the farm of Ira C. Waid, but at present there are but two--one on the old homestead farm, which was willed to R. L. Waid, but is now occupied by N. P. Waid, and the other the one which I myself work. My friends, George Floyd and Mrs. Laban Smith, make such a report concerning their sugar bushes. I have decided not to do the book verbatim, but only the parts where any genealogical info or any names shows up. I just have too many irons in the fire including a brand new granddaugher that need spoiling. Just had to get that in. Sandy

[I pause a moment here to make a remark, as the date of Mr. Baxter's death comes so near home to me as I write it. I had always loved him since our first acquaintance. He lived several years in our neighborhood; was superintendent of Sabbath-school at State Road, and I have always been acquainted with Phebe C. Baxter,* his beloved wife. She is a daughter of J. F. BREED, of whom I have spoken in this volume, and when I think of my own beloved wife, Eliza, whose name and memory to me are imperishable, never to be forgotten, died on the 4th of July, 1888, just six years to a day after my friend, Henry Baxter. Is it any wonder to the reader that I stop to think? But I continue to give the list of the departed ones. p. 340 AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THOMAS W. PHELPS (Written for his sincere friend Francis C. Waid) The record of my birth and parentage, etc., is included in the biographical record of the Phelps Family, and will be found at Page 338-339 in this book. When I left home, just before I was twenty-one years of age, I had no property I could call my own, and had but little schooling. However, during the winters of 1850-51 and 1851-52 I attended school, and in September, 1852, I commenced college, following which I taught school in various places, alternated with further studies at college. In 1856 I moved to Minnesota, and located at Marion, where I went to work immediately, and followed surveying several years. I was town superintendent of schools in 1860-61, and county superintendent several years. Have held nearly every town office; was a justice of the peace many years; was in the Legislature, 1871 and 1877' was president of the Agricultural Society, 1866-78-79, I have been district treasurer ever since 1874, and am now supervisor and treasurer. I have held nearly all the offices in the church; have been lay delegate, district and recording steward (many years); have held the office of class leader, steward, president of building committee (during the putting up two new churches); am at present steward and Sunday School superintendent On my farm we raise cattle, horses, hogs and the various kinds of grain and sees--hay, clover and timothy, for seed, doing well here. We have a comfortable living, enough for ourselves and whomsoever may visit us; and I wish you, my dear friend Mr. Waid, could come and see us and stay a long time. You and yours would be welcome and twice welcome. Things taste better when we have our friends with us. Come! Come!! Come!!! Your sincere Friend, THOMAS W. PHELPS. Chester, MINN. P. 338-339 - Second Souvenir MISCELLANEOUS BIOGRAPHY OF THE PHELPS FAMILY I take a pleasure in placing the following biography of the Phelps family on record in my SOUVENIT. It is not enough for me to say of Levi M. Phelps that I loved him. He helped me much in my lifetime, and God only knows how much he helped me on that never-to-be-forgotten occasion, when he knelt down and prayed for me in the old State Road Church on January 10, 1851. I loved Levi M. Phelps before than as a man and a friend, but from that day forward I loved him as a man, a true friend and as a father of the church until his death. And I yet love him, and cherish his precious memory with sincere reverence. It was his son, Nathan, who led me to the altar where I was converted, so it may not be wondered at that I love the Phelps Family. Levi M. Phelps was born August 3, 1803, in Maryland, and died March 31, 1857 in Minnesota. When he was but four years old his father died, and the boy was reared without education or any chance of improvement. He was a good father, a man who impressed all with whom he associated with the right, and was looked up to as a leader. He was for many years exhorter, steward, class leader and trustee of his church; was several times school and town officer. He died as he had lived. Shortly before he passed away he said: "I thought religion was good, but I never expected such a triumph. All joy, all peace, all Heaven!" (in italics) And though dead, he yet speaketh. His wife, Phebe M., was born July 28, 1808, in Allegany County, N.Y., and died July 29, 1875 in the town of Marion, Minn. She always despised wrong, looked with contempt on anything unchaste or dishonorable. She instructed her children in the right, and left a salutary impress on all she had to do with, and died in the faith. The children of Levi M. and Phebe M. Phelps were as follows: (1) Nathan S. born February 23, 1826, in Steuben County, N..Y., married Margaret Waldron February 18, 1870 and has three children, all girls. He resides in Olmstead, Minn., a wealthy farmer and a man of prominence in church and municipal affairs. (2) Eleazer C., born April 28, 1829, in Steuben County, N.Y., married Electa A. Rorman in September, 1750 (my note, must be 1850, no mention in the errata and emmandatins of a correction) in Crawford County, Penn., and has four daughters married. He is now a resident of Rochester, Minn. (3) Thomas W., born April 28, 1829, in Steuben Co., N.Y., married August 29, 1858, at Faribault, Minn., to Eliza Jane Hooner, and has four daughters and one son--Sadie P., Mina E., Thomas L., Emma B., and Jennie L., all living and well to do. He resides in Chester, Olmsted Co., Minn. [At page 340 will be found a brief autobiographical sketch of Thomas W. Phelps--F. C. W.] (4) Sarah J. born October 15, 1850, in Steuben Co., N.Y., has never married. She has taught school nearly 30 years, commencing in `848 in Crawford County, Penn. She is also a resident of Olmsted County, Minn. (5) Mary A., born April 15, 1832, in Potter County, Penn; is married and has four children. She was the first of a family of eleven children converted at the meetings held at State Road Church, Crawford Co., Penn., in 1850-51. She now lives in St. Clair County, Mo. (6) Sylvester N., born September 17, 1833, in Potter County, Penn.' is married and has one child, a daughter. He was converted in December, 1850, at the State Road Church, attended Allegheny College in Meadville, PEnn., and moved to Minnesota in September, 1844. Joined the Conference in 1856. and preached nearly twenty years. He owns a very fine farm. (7) Letita P., born August 15, 1835, in Steuben County, Penn is married and has three children living, all girls. He resides in Rochester, Minn. (my note - I wonder about this info - Is there a Steuben Co. PA??) (8) Loretta P., born August 8, 1837 died in April, 1874, in Marshall County, Iowa, leaving two children living--one son and one daughter. (9) Margaret E., born February 18, 1840, in Crawford Co., Penn.; married in 1858, and had two children by first marriage; in August, 1864, she lost her husband in the was, and in 1879 she again married, bu which union she had three daughters. She died February 9, 1887. (10) Amelia S., born July 26, 1846, in Crawford County, Penn.' is married, and resides in Marshall County, Iowa. (11) Emma, born in February, 1848, in Crawford County, Penn.; is married and has one child living. She resides at Crook City, Dak. More to follow
Hi Helene, Thanks for the information, but what I am looking for is the uncertified copies. They are usually less expensive and for genealogical and medical purposes only. In Ohio, they are $.03 versus $3 for certified. The forms you sent the links for are for certified copies. The note on the page says to "call for information" on non-certified, genealogical copies. Sorry to be such a pain... will probably just call tomorrow and get it over with :) Thanks! In our recent visit to Crawford Co., we got into the will of Robert Blair b 1785 (son of Hugh Blair b 1741) who married Martha McQuiston b 1791(dau of Andrew McQuiston b 1762). The will actually states that on Thursday a new will was written from 12:00 noon until 2:00 am in the morning. On Saturday morning 3/4/1854, Robert died. Now Robert & Martha had no children of their own, so Robert left 1/3 to his wife; 1/3 to the children of his sister Elizabeth and 1/3 to others. Now Elizabeth's children, sons of James McMaster, just happen to be Hugh, John, and James McMaster. He also stated that if his wife protested the will; she was to get nothing. Did she protest the will!!! All the way to the PA supreme court. It is now 1858, Hugh McMaster is off to Pittsburgh for the hearing. Opinion delivered by J. Lowrie; "If this example (of overturning the will) were followed in the administration of the law, every dying man's will would be in danger". The will was upheld. So who got what!!! That's what we would like to know. Unfortunately, Crawford Co. has poor records on dispersement. There is no stone for Martha beside Robert Blair. Is she there? Also, we visited Hartstown Cem. and found vandals damaged about 10 stones. One of those stones was of Thomas McLenahan/McClenahan. Thomas McLenahan b 1767 d 1847 dau Mary b 1799 d 1844 m Alexander Henry (brother of Robert Henry) dau Esther b 1800 d 1856 m Hugh McMaster son Thomas b 1804 d 1876 dau Martha b 1815 d 1893 m James Free Henry (son of Robert Henry) We left Thomas Sr.'s broken stone pieces leaning against his son's stone. It is written that Andrew McQuiston stayed with Thomas when they arrived in Adamsville from SC. So Martha McQuiston knew Thomas as well as Hugh McMaster did. A sad moment when we saw his stone in pieces. Thomas McLenahan Jr's land can be seen on the 1876 map near J F Patton's land located half way between Adamsville and Hartstown. On the J F Patton land is the newly found McMaster Cem. All the stones appear to be replacement stones. What happened to the originals!!! It was reported that Hugh Fletcher Blair's stone was being used as a back step at the original Blair's homestead. Now Hugh Blair just happened to be the son-in-law of Hugh McMaster (they sure loved that name Hugh). Hugh Blair's daughter has a stone in the McMaster Cem; no record of father Hugh. Is he buried there also or is he buried under the back step!!! Did the Blair's make a raid on the McMaster Cem!!! Was this lawsuit the start of the Hatfield and McCoys of Crawford Co.? Bob Hayden
Thanks to help of an Internet friend, I have some new names that are associated with my Charles L. Butterfield and his wife, Alvira/Elvira Diane Shirtliff. Elvira had a sister Elizabeth who married Henry Carter. Elizabeth died 5 July 1911 in Summerhill and is buried in Denny Cemetery. I have her obit but it doesn't give me any information on her parents. They also had a brother and sister living in Erie (no names). Are there any descendants of their kids? Hi! I am hoping someone on here can save me a phone call :) The Pennsylvania Division of Vital Records says that they do provide genealogical copies of birth and death certificates (1906 to present) but you have to call for more information. Now, I can do that, but I figured if someone on here knew the answer already as to how to go about getting them and how much they cost, I would save myself a step. Anyone know? Thanks in advance! I have found a wonderful picture of a First Grade class, Room 3, Landon School taken about 1913. Since my father's family moved from Titusville to Cleveland OH sometime around then, I am not sure if the Landon School was located in Titusville or Cleveland. The photo has an ID 8433 on it and is crystal clear. It may be of interest to others in the Titusville area if in fact there was a Landon School in Titusville. Does anyone know?
