I am trying to document a marriage which likely took place circa 1850 at the "Ev. Lutheran Church" at Saegertown. This could also be documented through baptisms of their children, no doubt at the same church. Do records for this church exist? Who would I write to to obtain such a record? Any help appreciated! I am trying to locate my Smock Family. Naomi Smock born April 04, 1866 in Conneaut Lake. She was the daughter of Christopher Smock and Eliza (?). I was hoping someone might know of the family or where the family might be buried. Thank you, Jason Mushrush
Hi, I am new to the mailing list. I am curious to find out if anyone is working on the TITUS family that settled Titusville? My 4x great grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Titus, married to Peter Bish. She was born approximately 1782 in either PA or Maryland. (She gives both places on various census records.) Her mother's name was Elizabeth Titus, and she died in 1808 in Armstrong Co., PA. Her father's name may have been John Titus. There is also a Timothy Titus listed on the 1830 census of Buffalo Twp., ARmstrong Co., PA, aged 40 to 50 years. I may be barking up the wrong tree here, but so far I have had no luck in pinning down my Titus ancestry. Thanks a bunch, Sherry

Looking for information on any Antes or Stamm families that came from this area.
Hi Everybody: Was copying this for Tom Yoset to put on his Website at http:www.gremlan.org/~ yoset/ and thought some on the list might enjoy reading it. If anybody is researching the Betts/Bates family that is mentioned in the write up I would appreciate hearing from them. Crawford County Directory of 1874 pg 118 WEST SHEANANGO was formed from South Shenango August 14, 1863. It lies in the south-west corner of the county, being separated from South Shenango by Shenango Creek, which is the only considerable stream. It contains 5,195 square acres. The surface is level and the soil adapted to the culture of fruit and grain. The Ashtabula & Franklin R.R., passes through the township adjacent to Shenango Creek. The population of the township in 1870 was 357, all of whom were white and all, except 13, native. During the year ending June 3, 1872, it contained four schools and employed eight teachers. The number of scholars was 89; the average number attending school, 75; and the amount expended for school purposes, $589.23. TURNERSVILLE (p.o.) is situated in the eastern part of the township and is distant from the A. & F. R. R. one-fifth of a mile. It contains one hotel, a school house, store, harness shop, wagon shop, two blacksmith shops and twenty-one dwellings. ROYALTON (West Shenango p.o.) is situated in the south-west corner of the township. Settlement is believed to have been commenced in 1800, by Andrew and John Betts, father and son, the latter of whom preceded his father a few months. They came from Fayette county and located on the farm now owned by Henry Betts, on road 6. Andrew followed hunting for a number of years and his son John relates that in one season he killed deer to the number of 175. John subsequently became a preacher of the Methodist persuasion. Benjamin Snodgrass and Thomas Loughery also came in 1800. They both emigrated from Ireland. The former settled near where Matthew H. Snodgrass now lives. Samuel Scott and John White, the latter from Perry county, were early settlers. A son of the latter advices us that his father settled about 1791, on the farm which he (the son) now owns, and that Scott settled about two years prior to that time. There is reason, however, to doubt this statement. Jeremiah Yokes, from Fayette county, settled in 1801, on the farm now owned by Alfred Kinne, and Robert French, from Redstone, settled in the northern part of the township in 1802. The first school in the township is believed to have been taught by Edward Hatton, who located on the place now owned by his son Leonard Hatton. State Line M.E. Church was organized with fourteen members, about 1819 by Rev. E. Morse, the first pastor. The Society first worshiped in a school house, and in 1851, their church edifice, which will seat 400 persons, was erected, at a cost of $1,100. The present value of Church property is $1,875. - (Information furnished by Mr. Francis H. My ancestor - Washington Huckelbery - was in the 11th Reg't during the Civil War. He died of wounds received at the Battle of Cedar Mountain in 1862. I was interested in Marilyn Hesse's entry about the regiment and wonder if she or anyone else knows anything about them - a roster of the men; the battles they fought; where they were recruited, etc. We have an unidentified photo of a soldier in uniform. Is there any info about what their uniforms were like? Appreciate any information anyone has - Marilyn Weeber --- cweeber@mindspring.com
Recently I saw a message on the Mercer Co. List and noticed the Bortner name in the signature. When I was a small child my Mills Grandparents lived on the "Bortner Farm" in southeast (or southcentral) Crawford Co. I think it was taken over by the Keystone Ordinance Works (called the TNT when I was growing up there). My Hamilton homestead in Greenwood Township was also part of this war effort. Hello all, Where would I find city dir.info for Springboro, 1920?? thank you.David.
My brother and I are finally going thru my father's pictures and trying to identify the people. We have one that is stumping us. We are hoping someone out there will know something about these people or the ball team, possibly dating the picture. There is a group of men, some in ball uniforms, some as umpires, some in regular dress. On the uniforms are the letters TK. Some of the men are wearing straw boater type hats, others old fashioned hats. If there is anyone out there that may be able to identify any of these men, I would appreciate it and am willing to send a scan of the picture. Remember, Barb Seyler's famous words, regarding pictures. Please identify them. We were also lucky enough to find a picture of my great-grandparents, John and Kathryn Hamman. You could look for John Scott in the 1860 census index. Unless they moved between 1858 and 1860, that would give you the township where their child was probably born. -----Original Message----- From: Nancy Scott <npscott@mwt.net> To: PACRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com <PACRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, March 03, 1999 5:02 PM Subject: [PACRAWFO-L] William Leonard SCOTT b. 1858 >William Leonard SCOTT, born in Crawford County on 14 Jan 1858 to John SCOTT >and Sarah Ann FRY. We would like to thank all the wonderful people that are on this list. Especially Beverly and Sharon, on helping me with the Grinnells and Culver's genealogy. It is so nice to have access to PACRAWFO-L rootsweb to help us have connections with other people who may have info. that people we are looking for. Also we get to know our relatives that we have never met . Thanks again Ray and Pat
To Pete Wilson- Yes, some of my McQUISTONs were from S. Shenango. I am descended from Rebecca McQUISTON (1836-1908), who married Robert MILLS (1835-1891). Thank you all for your suggestions. In the 145th Regt. was my ggfather Robert MILLS, who was born in Mercer Co., but later lived in Crawford Co. On his tombstone it says he was in the 145th. Other Crawford Countians were Ezra WILLIAMS, and possibly his son Robert, in the 111th Regt. They were from Conneaut Lake. Ezra died of chronic dysentery in Baltimore. >From Mercer Co: Andrew and John Mills were both in the 64th Regt.; David MILLS was in the 83rd Regt. I don't know the McQUISTON Regiments right now. I would very much appreciate any lookups, and I really would like to know more about what these regiments experienced. Marilyn Mills Hesse and kili... Company H of the 145th PVI came out of the Shenango townships. Give me the names of your ancestors and I will check the rosters. Otherwise, the CCHS has a file of the veterans of all wars. Pete Wilson PS Marilyn...Are your McQuistons from S. Shenango? Several of my MILLS and McQUISTON ancestors served in the Civil War from Mercer Co. and Crawford Co. Do you know of any good sources for Civil War history in this area? --
Pete, Marilyn, et al - Small correction - the CCHS has a card file index of all veterans BURIED in the county. Those buried here are only a part of those who served from Crawford County. CCHS has an assortment of regimental histories, some of which include details about soldiers after discharge. Would need to know which regiment(s) you were interested in. Annette Lynch Crawford Co.
