    1. [PACRAWFO-L] Calvin Gates
    2. Pat Vedner
    3. Courier & Record, 1 Sept 1882: Mr. Calvin Gates of Beaver township, mention of whose critical condition from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy was made in our last issue, died on Monday, just one week after being attached...In his death passed away one of the oldest residents of Western Crawford, one who has been very useful and influential in his community for nearly half a century. He was born in Herkimer Co., NHY 24 Feb 1803. At the age of 20 years he came west to Chautauqua Co. where in 1831 he was married to Caroline Hubbard, who survives him. In 1836 he made another move west, settling in Beaver upon the farm upon which he spent the remainder of his life. Mr. Gates was among the first of the active, enterprising men to settle in the township, and he at once made his presence felt for good in pushing forward road making and other improvements so sadly lacking in the the new country. He was nver an aspirant for any office, but was often called to fill positions in his township in which he always tried to do his duty. In early life he associated with the Christian Church, but the local society going down, he did not again unite with any organization. He was alwys blessed with excellent health and a remarkably cheerful disposition, making him a general favorite, especially among the young. Five children, two sons, Luther and George H., and three daughters, Mrs. A. N. Belnap, Mrs. G. C. Cooper and Miss Ora Gates, survive him, all living in Beaver except Mrs. Cooper, who is a resident of Spring, and all were present at his funeral. Two sons gave up their lives in the army. Within the sphere of his wide acquaintance he held the respect and esteem of all. He was passed away in more than the fullness of years, with his work well done and with a memory long to be treasured among those who can testify to his sturdiness of character and to the services which he has rendered. -- ********************************* Patricia Butterfield Vedner R. 3. I just ran across a website offering photocopies of old maps, portraits, homes, businesses, etc., from various sources covering several states. I know nothing about the quality of what he's selling, I've never ordered anything so can't vouch for him as a vendor, (everything is $5.00/each) but there sure was alot of Crawford County material for sale that might interest some: http://aol.members.com/oldmapsetc/ Virginia Burke

    2. Jeremy Nichols
    3. LDS does not use the Federal microfilm numbers. They use their own numbers issued in order as they receive and catalog the films. Rome Township in Crawford County's 1870 census is on roll #552,830 (my people are in Rome). Since they tend to list the townships in alphabetical order, I'd have to guess that the first half of the alphabet is on roll #552,829. Jeremy Nichols [FINK, NICHOLS, STEARNS]

    3. Dear List: I'm hoping some kind soul would find out if my long lost ancestor (George W. Hewes/Hughes, born 1838) is buried in the Hewes family lot in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Titusville. I'm almost certain his son Joel Hewes is there (1869-1952). 2. Sue
    3. I am seeking information on Danial and Jane Burns who lived in South Meadville in 1860 according to the federal census report. Just prior to Danial in the report was a Redding Burns who I feel may have been a son. Both were listed as farmers. Danial was 76 years of age and Redding 49 years of age. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you John Burns

    3. Hi, The 1870 Crawford census is on two films.....M593 - 1330 and M593 - 1331. These are Federal numbers and I can't remember if the LDS uses them, but I think so. --Colleen Vancouver, WA.

    3. No, the Crawford County Census as enumerated is on microfilm at LDS. We have used the films, but do not remember if other counties were even partially on the same roll(s).
