James A. Gregory's grandparents and numerous relatives are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Rome Township, about 10 mi. north of Titusville, so that probably accounts for the desire to print his obituary in a Titusville newspaper. The cemetery inscriptions were published in the Crawford County Genealogical Society's magazine for Spring/Summer, 1990, pp. 27-33. The Gregory annotations were based on a Gregory family chart provided by David Gregory of Bellaire, Mich. and Mary [Mrs. Jeffrey] Dunbar of Meadville, Pa. [pp. 37-40] (The Dunbars no longer live in Meadville.) The chart did not list James A. among the 4 children of James & Caroline, so apparently they hadn't found complete information on that family. Is the name of Emilena SCHWARTZMAN familiar to you. She was b 1893 and d. 1981 probably in Meadville. Her sisters were Stella, Marie and brother was Wm Swartzman. Are these names familiar to you? Can you share information? I can share information on her brother's children and grandchildren. Adina Roberts Researching Roberts, Inman, Perry, Yarnell, Standley and Swartzman
Interested in obtaining Methodist records for area around Titusville,Pa. Are there any links for same? Interested in GREGORY FAMILY. Many, many thanks! trudy ny Trudy, Do you have any more specific information regarding the area and possibly the congregation? In general, Methodist (now United Methodist) church records are kept at the particular local church. Not all pastors kept good records, and many books have been lost or destroyed over the years, so it is hard to tell what might be available. If you know the particular congregation, or even a specific community, I might be able to point you to the pastor who could check for you. If the congregation was merged into another, its records should have been transferred to the new congregation, but no assurance that this happened. If a church closed, the district superintendent should have taken custody of the records, and they should have been deposited in the conference archives. But notice I said "should!" Give me some specifics, and I'll try to make some suggestions. I am a United Methodist pastor, and I grew up just a few miles from Titusville. I'll look forward to hearing from you. Ernie Tracy
Jan: That would be wonderful. I have no pictures at all of them. My great uncle who is 94 had a few pictures, but his house burned down about 20 years ago, and all were lost. Matthew McMichael was my gr gr gr grandfather, Thomas Harvey, his son, my grgr grandfather, Oscar Randolph McMichael, his son, my great grandfather. I know that Thomas Harvey and Oscar R. are not buried in PA, but the McMichaels before them are. I am looking for info about the McMichaels, but also, Thomas Harvey McMichael's (1832-1911) wife, my great grandmother, Margaret Jane Ewing (1832-1913). I think they were married in Crawford County around 1855. I am wondering if any of her family is in any of the cemeteries. Thank you so much for your help!!! Hello list, I discovered a note I had put away that there was a man by the name of A. Clinton Rallya who died in 1939 in Los Angeles formerly of Meadville. Apparently he was a Vet. of Custers Campaign according to this note. I would like to be able to tie him into my David's family. I am thinking his name might have been Anthony Clinton or Clinton Anthony as I found Clinton A. Rallya in the 1920 census in Los Angeles. The census shows he is 72 living with Howard A. Estes and Carrie E. Webster. It states that Clinton A. is a cousin, from PA as were his parents and he was a sign painter. Carrie E. is also shown as being a cousin. I am hoping this might ring a bell with someone. Thanks in advance. Betty Macdonald
Irene: Thank you so much!!! How nice of your brother to go to the cemetery. I hope to come to Crawford County PA some day and visit it also. I am related to all of them. The Matthew D that is mentioned is the one that was my gr gr gr grandfather. Thomas was his father. I have been trying to find out why Matthew died so young. I can't seem to find a reason for his death, (like a sickness and I am also wondering if he was in the war.) So many of them have the same first names that it becomes very confusing. Jean, Thank you, This is indeed the Jack SWARTZMAN that I am inquiring about. I am his niece by marriage, the daughter-in-law of Bob Roberts. his partner. It is good to know someone on the list remembers Jack and Bob. Maybe they can remember things that will help my search now that they know who I am looking for . Both families moved to CA. The Roberts in 1951 and the Swartzmans' in 1954. The Roberts still live in CA and half of the Swartzmans in CA and half in AZ along with grandchildren and great grandchildren. I have done reasonably well with the ROBERTS family history, but no one seems to be able to find anything on the SCHWARTZMAN/SWARTZMAN family so I thought that I would give it a try and turned to this list. I hope that others can give some information. It was good to hear a little about the store as that is the way my father-in-law always referred to it. Adina, I don't know if this will be helpful or not but there was a Jack Schwartzman who owned a grocery store on the corner of Arch St. and Grove St. in Meadville. I don't remember when it was opened or when it was closed but do know that for a time it must have been a fairly prosperous business. All of the families in the neighborhood traded there and folks who worked at Talon up the hill would stop, also employees from Spencer Hosp. too. There was a man named Bob who was a partner of his and for some reason want to say it was his brother-in-law. Can't remember his last name. When the super markets came to town they could not compete with the prices so went out of business. My Mom told me one of them moved to California but don't remember who. Hope this helps, Jean
Researchers, Is there anyone who could look-up some info on John D. GAMBLE from the book, "History of Crawford County", published by Warner Beers ? I am most interested in the wife and children names of John D. Gamble. Is this book on-line? Thank you, Sharon
Researchers, Through the kindess of those who shared from their resources, I have compiled the following info on John GAMBLE's family. Family connections, corrections, helpful suggestions, and/or 1920 and 1930 census info are most welcome. 1880 W. Fallowfield, Crawford Co, PA John GAMBLE, 33, druggist, PA/Ireland/PA Mary E. (Elizabeth), 35, PA/PA/PA Nannie, 5, PA/PA/PA Alda B., 3, PA/PA/PA Mary, 1, PA/PA/PA (my line of research) John GAMBLE died July 1885 per headstone at Rocky Glen Cem., Adamsville, Crawford Co., PA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1900 W. Fallowfield, Crawford Co., PA (very hard to read) Elizabeth GAMBLE, 56, widowed, PA/PA/PA Nannie, 25, single, daugh, PA/PA/PA school teacher Alda, 23, single, daugh, PA/PA/PA, seamstress Mary, 21, single, daugh, PA/PA/PA, post mistress (my line of research) Carl, 17, single, son, PA/PA/PA (no other info than this entry) Daye, 15, single, daugh, PA/PA/PA Additional info: Nan married aft 1900 to unk KLINGINSMITH; Nan died 1922 Alda married aft 1900 to Charles L. POSSIBLY, there is another daughter for John and Mary Elizabeth (BROWN) GAMBLE named Martha. This possibility based on the Gamble name and the location of Martha Gamble NEWBOLD's (1881 - 1910) grave to all the other graves of the above. I have no more info on Martha. Lastly, it is possible that John GAMBLE was a son of John D. and Mary GAMBLE; and Mary Elizabeth (BROWN) GAMBLE was a daughter of John F. and Emeline L. BROWN. Hoping this info will help others also, Sharon
I recently came into more old pictures, many of which had belonged to my greatgrandmother, Rosetta LUPHER GILSON TAYLOR OSBORN of Crawford County. A small suitcaseful, literally. Many of them are not identifiable, not by me, not yet, but I have put some more of those that are on my website. I now have more information about Rosetta's last husband, Hart Osborn, including a picture of him. I myself am from her TAYLOR period and there are new pictures of her and her second husband, my greatgrandfather Chandler Price TAYLOR, too. Other names connected to Crawford Co include COBURN, CROUCH, FOUST, OAKES, PERKINS, ROUCHE, many more. Bev, From this email it does look like the Clyde E Williams and Clarence are brothers. Clyde married my ggrandfather's(Newton Earl Powell, husband of Maude Marie Anderson) sister,Florence Anne Powell Stenger. She was to have been married to a Samuel Stenger and widowed in 1925. Her children's info says their father's name was Samuel Stenger but other than that I really haven't located him. I will dig up that marriage application and send you a copy by postal mail if you want.Let me know.
