    3. Hi Darla- One of the things I found on a recent trip to the Historical Society in the Meadville Library was "A Complete Directory of Crawford County, Pennsylvania, 1879-80...Giving the name, residence, occupation and post office address of every citizen." It was reprinted by Closson Press in July 1998. The index lists both T. Harvey McMICHAEL and Alvin McMICHAEL. They are on page 94. Unfortunately I didn't copy those pages. Perhaps someone else has it - or you could contact the Historical Society. Linda in Utah ----- Original Message ----- From: Dick Straw Sent: Sunday, September 08, 2002 10:38 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Crawf'rd] Clara B. (Straw) Kepler I seek information on the parents and husband of Clara B. Straw, who is shown in the records of the Venango Cemetery as born in 1878 and died 9 Jan 1972 under the name Clara B. (Straw) Kepler (received from James Acker, secretary of the cemetery association). She has been identified as a child of Michael J. Straw and Sarah (Gillis?). The records in the 1900 census for Venango Boro indicate that this couple was married about 1876 (24 years earlier), when they were 27 and 21 years old, resp. and Sarah reported in this census that she had had six children of whom four were living in 1900, their names listed as Walter J, Jenny G, Blanch E and Robert C., ages 4 to 18. On this basis it is doubted that Michael and Sarah were the parents of Clara B. Straw. It has been suggested that Clara was the wife of James Kepler, but I have found no evidence on this at this time. The issue is somewhat confused by the appearance of a Clara A. Kepler in the Erie County, PA, census records. In 1900 she is listed as a daughter of Harriet Brundage, and born March 1860, age 40. She appears again in the 1920 census at age 60. 3. I, too, am surprised that this situation hasn't been mentioned on the list. We read about it in a copy of the Erie Times which my daughter happened to pick up for some other reason. The Historical Society collection is a real treasure, and many Crawford County researchers have benefited from it.

    3. We had a great trip to western PA. It was a "sentimental journey" - to my hometown, my parents' hometowns, meeting new relatives and renewing old acquaintances. We also enjoyed the magnificent Pennsylvania scenery, meandering across the state and stopping overnight at Bellefonte near State College and on the way back at Port Allegheny. We found Barber Cemetery in Conneaut Lake and took some great pictures of the Dennis headstones and the overall woodsy scene. At the Crawford Co.Historical Society on the second floor of the Meadville Library I combed through all of the Meadville city directories and picked up several obituaries as well as the newspaper birth notices for my father, my sister, and myself. The old newspapers there are precious, as is the card file of birth, marriage, and death notices and other items. The staff there was most helpful. We made some important genealogical discoveries in all 3 counties visited (Crawford, Mercer, and Beaver), and I can't say enough about the helpful people and resources in the local historical and genealogical societies. They helped me go back 2 or 3 more generations and I found two new surnames to research. We were quite concerned to learn that the C.C.Historical Society may have to move out of the Meadville Library. I'm surprised there has been nothing on this mailing list about it. There may have been further developments since my return last week, but the Meadville Tribune on line is very sketchy. I do hope they can resolve the problem. My high school reunion (50th) was great fun. Everyone had matured and mellowed enough to just relax and relive the old days. We also paid visits to Conneaut Lake, the Crawford Co. Fair, the Drake Oil Well Museum in Titusville, and Eddie's Foot-long Hotdog Stand. 3. This family never ceases to amaze me. I did not realize that Benjamin Franklin was a Byers. In both the 1850 and 1860 censuses, he is listed as a Parker! I thought it rather odd that Ledyard had given two sons the same name, but then, people do funny things. Do you need these census entries? John Parker's obit lists brother Ami, and two sisters, Margaret Whittaker and Nancy Hogle. Margaret is listed in the 1850 census entry as M.E., age 6/12, and the entire family, including Eli Byus (sic), age 19, and Benjamin Parker, age 11, appears in the 1860 census entry. Is Eli another of Margaret Minium's children by her first husband? Why would he be listed as a Byers but Benjamin listed as a Parker? And where was he in the 1850 census? Do you know Margaret's first husband's first name? None of John's Parker half-sibs are mentioned in the obit, so it is not surprising that Byers half-sibs weren't mentioned either. 1. RE: [Crawf'rd] Ledyard Parker

    3. Evidently Ben Franklin was popular. Just to make sure there is less (!) confusion, there were evidently 2 Benjamin Franklins: Benjamin Franklin Parker, born to Ledyard and Hannah Wolcott Thompson about 1838. Ledyard and Hannah were married Aug. 12, 1838. They were divorced in 1949. She might have filed in 1947 Then, based on the Byers family information, (Barbara, Nancy), there was a Benjamin Franklin Byers, born in 1948 to a William Byers and Margaret Minium. Margaret later married Ledyard Parker on Oct. 20, 1849. There is evidence, that Margaret Minium was still married to him when he died in City Point Virginia. An exceprt lists her as his widow. Hannah probably had her Benjamin Franklin Parker with her when they divorced. If Benjamin Franklin was 11 in the 1860 census it has to be Ben F. Byers, not Parker. As for the 1850 Census, I don't have it, and don't know the age listed, but I would assume it was Byers because Hannah left and went to Wisconsin. Mistakes were made in the census, so could be to us a coincidence because there were 2 Ben Franklins Sharon -----Original Message----- From: Annette Lynch [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, September 08, 2002 1:39 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Crawf'rd] Ledyard Parker This family never ceases to amaze me. 1. Re: [Crawf'rd] John D. GAMBLE info from book?
    2. Sharon, The following appears in the HISTORY OF CRAWFOR COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA, pages 993 - 994 under the heading of South Shenango Township. JOHN D. GAMBLE, farmer, P.O. Hartstown, was born March 15, 1813, in Ireland, and is a son of John and Eliza [Dixon] Gamble, who had a family of six children, of whom our subject was the younges, his mother dying soon after his birth. His father was married twice, and had eight children by his last wife, a Miss Parr. Our subject was married May 2, 1837, to Mary, daughter of Thomas Baird, who had nine children, five now living, Mrs. Gamble being the third child in the family. Mr. and Mrs. Gamble have had twelve children of whom six survive: Eliza J., now Mrs. Atkinson, of Fulton County, Ill.l Martha C., unmarried, living in Geneva, Ohio; Sarah A., died in 1870; James D., died leaving one daughter, Emma; Thomas R. died leaving one daughter, Mary L.; J9ohn, married Elizabeth Brown, of Adamsville [have five children: Nancy, Alda, Mary, Martha and Thomas C.]; Susan, now Mrs. Brown, residing in Kingman County, Kan. [has three children: Bessie, Annie, Wallace], Mary E., now Mrs. Willis, in Fulton County, Ill. [has three children: Ralph, J.D., and Bruce]; William A., died unmarried; Nancy H. died in 1875; Harriet, now Mrs. J.B. Davis, at home with her parents; Roberty Y., died unmarried. Our subject has been long a leading man in his township, and has held most of the township offices, has also been School Director. As he had the advantage of educated parents he was well qualified for official life. By trade Mr. Gamble was a tanner, and worked at that business fourteen years. His education was received at home under his father, who was a prominent educator of his day. In his political views he is a Democrat. He is a member of the United Presbyterian Church. His beautiful and well improved farm lies in the northern part of the township. Additionally, the following info appears on pages 994 - 995. HUGH M. GAMBLE, farmer, P.O. Jamestown, Mercer Co., Penn, was born in this township, August 14, 1829, and is a son of Rev. John and Elizabeth [Parr] Gamble. His father was a native of the north of Ireland, and was twice married, his first wife dying in Ireland, leaving three children, one of whom, John D., a farmer, still lives. His father came to America in 1821, as a missionary for the Presbyterian Church of Ireland, and being a classical scholar he turned his attention to the profession of teaching for a pert of his time. He first landed in Newfoundland, where he remained for a time; next he came to Boston, Mass., and then to this county, where he was the real founder of the Mamestown Seminary, and the originan source for Bible instruction, for which the community is so much indebted. He was found to be the right man in the right place. To him did many of the most eminent men of his day look up for instruction. His second wife, Elizabeth [Parr] Gamble, was also a native of Ireland, and by her he had eight children, seven living; Mary A., wife of James M. Snodgrass; Martha; Caroline; William J., married first Helen Beebe, who left two children, next he married Esther Bingham, who has three children; Andrew T., who is in California; Hugh M., our subject; and David, who is married to Samantha Mossman, and has three children. Our subject was educated in the Franklin Academy, where his father was Principal. He was brought up to hard labor, and when embarking out on life's career for himself he had no money--nothing but stout hands and a willing heart, and by frugality and unabating efforts he has secured a beautiful farm near the village of Jamestown. Here he lives and enjoys the confidence and re4spect of his many neighbors. Mr. Gamble was married in 1862, to Ellen, daughter of William McKee, who died in 1865, leaving one child--Wilson P. Mr. Gamble was next married to Ellen, daughter of the late William Dickey, and by this union there are four children: William D., Mary E., Maggie M. and Samuel C. In this volume apprars a portrait of our subject as a representative of the Gamble family who did so much for the village of Jamestown, in the way of educational interests. etc. It was preferable on the part of Mr. Gamble to have his father's portarit in the work, but as no likeness of the latter exists, he consents to appear himself. Mr. Gamble is a member and Ruling Elder of the United Presbyterian Church; is a sociable, affable gentleman, one who attends strictly to his own business and relies on his own judgement. W. J. Gamble and Esther Jane Gamble portraits appear on pages 348, 349. H. M. Gamble portrait appears on page 387. William Jenks Gamble is the half brother of John D. Gamble if I am interpreting the information corrrectly. Esther Jane Gamble is W. J.'s second wife. The information is a bit confusing in that it seems to indicate that both Rev. John Gamble and William Jenks Gamble are the father of the Hugh M. Gamble, the subject of the above. [Maybe it is the early morning foggy brain] There is more...........page 846 WILLIAM JENKS GAMBLE, physician and surgeon, Mosiertown, was born in Boston, Mass., December 23, 1824. His father, Rev. John Gamble, a native of Belfast, Ireland, of Scotch Presbyterian descent, born in 1777, married Miss Eliza Parr, born in 1785, in County Down, Ireland, and a descendant of the famous old Parr family of England. They immigrated to America in about 1807. Being educated for the ministry of the United Presbyterian Church, he adopted the profession of teaching and was engaged in Jamestown and Greenville Academies, makeing a specialty of classics and higher mathematics. After a long life of usefulness he died in 1844. His widow followed him in 1866. She was the mother of nine children. Our subject was educated in the Jamestown Seminary and Franklin Academy, and at the age of nineteen years he was teaching the English branches, mathematics, Latin and Greek languages. At the age of twenty-three he began the study of medicine under Dr. Gibson, of Jamestown. He graduated at the Eclectic Medical College, of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1854. He had established himself at Mosiertown in 1851, prior to his taking the degree of M.D., and has since remained there. He married, December 12, 1865, Miss Helen M. Beebe, of Pleasantville, Venango Co., Penn., and of their three children William M. and Robert B. Survive. Mrs. Gamble died May 25, 1873. On December 18, 1876, the Doctor married Miss Esther J. Bingham, born in 1846, in eastern Pennsylvania, a daughter of Rev. Bingham, a native of Mercer, Mercer co., Penn., born in 1810, and died in Mosiertown in 1876; his widow survives. The present Mrs. Gamble has blessed her husband with three children: Eleanor, seven years old, John K., four years old, and Martha Elizabeth, *six months old. The Doctor has been averse to office, yet his neighbors, recognizing his worth and honesty, thrust upon him the position of Township Treasurer for two terms, and School Director for many years, and he has been willing to serve his share of the small offices where pay is not considered. He was firmly attached to the cause of the union, and has been a life-long adherent of the Republican party, to which he clings tenaciously. Our subject became a member of the National Eclectic Association, June 14, 1877. He is a physician of first class scientific attainments, and enjoys on of the most extensive practices in western Pennsylvania. Personally he is of splendid physizue, being six feet, three and a half inches in height and portly in proportion. Elsewhere in this volume will be found steel portraits of this worth citizen and representative physician of Crawford County and his good lady. * Born August 22, 1884 There is also a bio connected with the Snodgrass that married a Gamble woman and who studied under Dr. W. J. Gamble. I'm sorry that I don't have time to copy that at the moment. If you would like me to get you xerox copies of the portraits as well as the Snodgrass info, please send me your snail mail address and I will send those. Hope I haven't made too many typo errors. I did hurry a bit. Also hope this info is of some help to you. Karen Ahlgren Russell, PA [email protected]
