    3. Laura: I would like the membership information, and list of books available for purchase. I have asked for and received research from the Crawford County Historical Society in the past and without its help would not have been successful in tracing my heritage. The society provides a valuable service. This is an organization that should be treasured by the community. Finding out where we came from seems to matter to more people than ever. It seems to me that the membership of $15 per year is a very small price to pay, and if possible and if it would be helpful, I for one would be happy to see the dues raised. Please sign me up to be a member. 1. [Crawf'rd] Library needs vs historical society
    2. gloria m rodas
    3. I live in WA state and have not been able to get to Crawford co yet, but it has been my number one dream, and I hope that this issue can be worked out to accommodate both parties. All of my roots are there in Crawford co...the Isaac Wright Collins/ Margaret Bennett line...and although Dale and Florence Collins are there on the spot so to speak, i do feel that fresh eyes and a different outlook may come up with something new, which is my goal on this line. I have memberships in the county historical societys of 3 eastern states, and was hoping to include Crawford co next time i am able to join another Society. Washington state is a recent history move for my family(1900) and so i really need all the resources available from other states. There is another idea that may help get staffing... High school students as researchers for high school credits and free research technique training... it has worked here in WA very well, plus it keeps costs down for people needing free or very low cost research help. My niece is a perfect example of the sense of the program. she is a sophomore in high school going for a 2 year college degree concurrently with finishing her high school credits, in a program called running start. I think all college bound students should be required to so some kind of genealogy research , because the benefits are far reaching in many careers , since the correct research techniques really make a difference in how efficient a task gets done. my niece helped me over the summer with research and computer word processing, and it made all the difference to me, and she learned more history than just family lines, a living vital history that applied to her people, and she became proficient in knowing where to research and how to get the info needed from obscure sources. she also learned a lot about analytical thinking , lineal projection, cause and effect, and creative research. Her mother also felt that the experience was positive in the extreme. My nephew ( from another sister) has just begun to take over, and he is a freshman in HS, and we are so far having the same results with him, possibly even more so, because he is a methodical person to begin with, which my niece was not. The CCHS can go to the high school, give a talk, show examples, show the possible benefits to students, and do a pilot program with volunteers to see if it is a viable program in your area. Our history shows us how we got to be not only where we are, but WHO we are. I for one think that is important in considering goals for the future, and since I have been working on genealogy I have been able to overcome a lot of genetic and social conditioning, because of the diversity of my near and far ancestors . I wish Crawford co all the very best in working out this issue. P.S. IL has a similar program using IRAD and College student researchers, and it also works well, and is extremely cost efficient. OR uses students as library interns for credits and free research in some places. This also works for genealogy because OR has many Oregon trail questions on a daily basis, as a required state study for students. gloria lange rodas- WA state. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 2. Hi, Guess I will add my two cents to this discussion. I live in Harborcreek (Erie) Pa, so not too far from Meadville. Have gone there many times for research. They do a wonderful job there, but I think they could use more space. I volunteer once a week at the Heritage Room in the beautiful new Blasco (Erie Co. Public) Library. We have a very large section, formerly staffed by just volunteers, now they have a librarian in addition to volunteers. It is very popular! I find it hard to believe the MPL's attitude toward the Crawford Co. Historical Society. I hope they will be able to solve this problem. It is important to so many people...after all it is one of the top hobbies of this nation. Dolores Laughlin-Hickernell

    1. [Crawf'rd] Genealogists helping the economy of Crawford County
    2. I'm planning my first ever trip to Crawford county in June/July 2003. I plan to spend 4 or 5 nights there, using commercial accomodations, restaurants, etc. If someone is working up some anecdotal information on the impact on the economy, please include my planned visit in the tabulation. I have lots of ancestors there from the late 1700's up to 1912 and some later, but there's a huge amount a data I need on them. It's probably going to take more than one such visit to cover all my interests. The Historical Society should be a key part of my research. Genealogy is a rapidly growing field. There will be many more of us in the coming years with a major interest in Crawford County. Bob Calvin South Glastonbury, CT

    3. I have to agree with George's letter below. I have also used the Meadville Library and Courthouse for much of my research. I am also putting money into the Meadville ecomony as I am coming down from Canada to search for information on my family lines. The area hold many family ties and I really appreciate the help and researches available to all of us through the collection held at the Library. Most libraries hold a small or large selection of Genealogical section within their halls, isn't that what a library is for - to house our books and history? I hope that someone from the Crawford County Historical Society, the Conneaut Valley Historical Society and others in the area take these vast e-mails to the Meadville Public Library. Let those peolple involved with making the decisions at the Library know what others from outside the community know. That there is a great need and interest in the books held in the within their walls and that it brings people from all over the country to their fair city who would not travel there otherwise. We are manned by volunteers and it costs the county nothing except the electricity for lights and copy machines etc. They forward all genealogical letters to us to handle thus freeing up their personel. We fund ourselves mainly by republishing old historical books etc and making a small profit on them and use it to publish more books etc and have programs. Dan Burrows Otisville NY

    2. Hello all, I have been reading with interest the discussion about the Library and the Genealogy folks and Historical Society. I was born and raised in Meadville and have a nephew still there. You must understand the Meadville "mentality" and I am not sure that is the correct word to use and I don't understand it well enough to put it in writing. But as I read all of this I chuckle and think "yup, that is Meadville." My feelings are that the College is on a "give and take," mostly take, relationship with the town and has been for many, many years. Charlie Anderson is President of the Chamber of Commerce and is truly civic minded from what I have known and seen about him. He also was born and raised there and his roots go back some generations. He may be the person to write to and put a bee in his bonnet. As in every town money talks and hopefully someone will make the appropriate folks wake up and smell the coffee. Keep it going folks, Jean in Texas
