James Duratz, in memory of his wife, Helene Barco Duratz, and his sister-in-law, Yolanda Barco, donated the Barco office building to the MLAHA in 2000, with the intention it be used by the CCHS. It was the idea of the MPL's Director to try to rent it to CCHS instead, and restrict the CCHS in the building's use. Annette, Has anyone approached the Barco family regarding a grant/help in this situation? They seem to be doing lots for the community from what I have heard and noticed in the paper. Too bad Dr. Winslow is long gone! Jean in Texas
Not exactly. The real issue, in my view, seems to be our relationship to the MPL, and our right to share the building. Of course, if we had sufficient funding to purchase and maintain our own building, that would be great, but it's not realistic at this time. As for the potential site (in the other building which the MPL now has), some of the things you asked about are currently being negotiated, so I really have nothing definite to report. As I said earlier, the original offer had many strings attached which would have limited our ability to run the CCHS as we chose. I do know that the MPL had threatened to take away our stacks, which would have left all of our material on the floor. Wouldn't that have made a nice picture for the newspapers! Has anybody thought of asking the local Bar Association or the newspapers to research the time funds where raised for the MPL, CCHS and MLAHA groups back in 1925 ? Ms Polo I would like information about membership for the Crawfords County Historical Society. I have not had the opportunity to visit Crawford County, I was hoping someday of making that journey and maybe doing some research for my Leiphart ancestors. I live in Wisconsin and work full time so this would have to be a vacation, if I can talk my husband into it. I would hate to see the CCHS not be there if I ever make it. I hope you all can find a solution to the problem of space. It would be a shame to lose a collection of our history or not beable to access it. My email: [email protected] Sincerely, Debra Barlow (Leiphart)
Hi Evelyn: Support of the Historical Society, if you mean monetary, isn't exactly the issue, though, if the Library has its way, the utilities and staff costs would require about $15,000 additional revenue PER YEAR, according to the figures the Library gave us last year. The Barco Duratz building would provide more space, handicapped access, and 6 parking spaces. The Historical Society has sufficient furniture, and the Library is would buy new shelving in exchange for the current shelves which they would keep on Diamond Park, so I don't think equipment and supplies are a big need at present--though the Historical Society won't turn away any willing volunteer or contributor. Annette, I sent my letters today and my renewal for my membership. Just a thought. I belong to the Hacker's Creek Pioneer Descendants in West Virginia and they had a problem with the old building they were in. Through a grant they were able to get an old school house for there new building. Not sure what was all involved but if you went to email the director, Iam sure she would fill you in on what she had to do and may give you some information may help our problem. Her name is Joy Stalnaker and she can be reached at [email protected] I hope this may help with our problem. If nothing more then some other ideas that may fit our problem. Bill and Annette: To clarify. Is the real issue here continuing support for the Historical Society? Would the proposed new location provide more space( such as sufficient tables and chairs, and room for microfilm readers?) Handicapped access? Parking? Longer hours if volunteers could be found to staff it? I, for one, would be willing to donate to a start-up campaign for equipment and supplies. if the move takes place. Evelyn Anderson
Bill, Thank you very much. Now for the method in my madness. It is our (WE, THE PEOPLE who have used, are using and plan to use the CCHS Library) turn. Borrowing a page from the successful "Third Battle of Manassas" (I have lived in Manassas, VA for the last 15 years.) when concerned citizens the world over objected to the local government permitting a real estate developer to start to developing the property on which the "Second Battle of Manassas" (Second Bull Run) took place in August of 1862. A letter writing campaign prompted congress to purchase the property and add it to the Manassas National Battlefield. Now it is time for all of us to write the people listed and voice our opinion.
