I've been trying to join the CC Genealogical Society, and have been wondering if it has a building or a room somewhere in Meadville where a visitor can go to do some genealogy research. Is it possible that the CCGS has no such place, and that the CC Historical Society, in effect, fills that role? My other question is about joining CCGS, since I' m most anxious to start receiving the journal: Crawford County Genealogy - which I consulted in Boston and found to be extremely useful. I sent a letter (and a check, to join the Society) to CCGS, PO Box 514. This was sent about 8/23; having heard nothing, I'm wondering if the Society is less active this time of year, or if the address I used might be incorrect. Is this the Jacob Shontz who was the father of Friend Shontz? If so, I would like to know a bit more about Jacob and his family. Jan - I have a hunch your Rouche is actually Roueche. Roche and Roueche are absolutely distinct, separate names. There are two apparently unconnected Roche families in the Frenchtown area, and one Roueche family. I have information about one of the Roche families, and the Roueche family - place of origin in France, US arrival, etc. Please contact me privately at [email protected] Would be happy to see if we can place Harry Rouche. >From: "Janice A. Not to my knowledge. Jacob and Rebecca Reed Shontz arrived in Allegheny Co (now Sadsbury Twp) in the late 1790. He received patent on the 400 acres on the Southeast shore of Conneaut Lake from about Bud Miller's Ford east to the township line. He brought his mother, mother-in -law and sister-in-law with him. (All buried in Lakeview Cemetery which Jacob gave to the SCEDER church (Today the United Presbyterian) The 3 eldest sons John, Jacob and Christian were probably born in Huntingdon Co. The following in Sadsbury Twp; David (1803-1828) drown in Conneaut Lake- wife and 2 children unidentified, Mary B (1804-?) married George W Richards (Family disappeared from Summit/Conneaut Twp, no stones in Cemetery lot), Susanna (1808-1880) married John McMichael, Jeanette Rebecca (1811-1889) married Rev Mathew Snodgrass and Samuel Reed (1817-1895) married Maria Myler. The family tree is published in The History of Conneaut Lake and the High Street United Presbyterian Church. If larger quarters are the ultimate result of the library/CCHS problem, shouldn't the old court records be taken into consideration as far as housing? I understand that the courthouse also has a space issue concerning old documents. I've seen the two combined and it works well. / Where can I find pre-1848 county tax records? Beth
