Thanks Kathy. The photos at Carlisle are the ones my dad sent in., along with some papers. While I'm on the subject of the 150th, I'd like to mention that William L. PERRY's tent mate was Charles FLICK. I know he went to Cleveland, Ohio, after the war. I have some info on him that I would like to share with any FLICK descendants. Beth
there is a book entitled "Pennsylvania Bucktail: A Photographic Album of the 42nd, 149th, & 150th Pennsylvania Regiments The author is Patrick A. Schroeder (no relation) from the collection of Ronn Palm. Ronn Palm has a museum in Gettysburg. It is printed on high gloss acid free paper. I checked for any Meyer but was not listed as an identified Bucktail. There are many unidentified. http://www.civilwar-books.com/index2.htm This space for rent. Debi: Marriage records begin in 1885, and continue to the present at the county court house. Birth and death records were only kept at the court house from 1893 to 1905, and after that they are with the State Dept. of Vital Statistics. There were birth death and marriage records kept from 1852-1855, but most people did not comply with the law, so they are not nearly complete. For Crawford Co. they have been published in the county genealogical society magazine, Crawford Co. Genealogy, and I understand they are available on one of the Crawford Co. websites. The cities of Meadville and Titusville also kept birth and death records beginning in 1881, and they are at the city halls. The earliest Meadville ones have also been published in Crawford Co. Genealogy, and microfilms of them are available at the Meadville Public Library. Beyond that, there are no official records. Births were rarely announced in the newspapers, so one usually has to find a family Bible or possibly a church baptismal record. [Check the county history for churches in the area where your relatives lived and then check modern telephone books to see if the churches are still there.] Crawford Co. Genealogy has published some church records, and the LDS [Mormon] Church has some on microfilm. But some church records only give the date of baptism and not the birthdate. Marriages and deaths were often published in the newspaper, and the Crawford Co. Historical Society has an index to the Meadville papers from 1805 to the 1960's. If you find a citation, you can order a microfilm of the paper through your local library's interlibrary loan from the Pa. State Library in Harrisburg. The Historical Society also has a fairly complete collection of cemetery inscriptions. They do research for $25 per hour, and could copy and send them to you. They have family histories which have been donated to them as well--but some are them are like the one you describe: information but no sources listed. Hope this helps. Does anyone on the list have some helpful hints for long-distance researchers (I live near Boston) on locating Crawford Co. birth, marriage and death records prior to 1893 (which I understand is the earliest date available in the County Courthouse)? At the moment, I'm looking for records in the 1830's. I'm looking for the name WINTON just in case anyone out there is looking for it as well. Someone once sent me an excerpt from a book giving specific birth dates ofr certain people, but I don't know where the author got them and I'm trying to verify. Thanks in advance. Debi Ham
Hi, I'm looking for the DUNCAN and McINTIRE families in West Fallowfield township. They apparently moved to Crawford County in the 1810s or 1820s. If anyone has any information about these families, I would be grateful to hear from them. Marsha Heizer Chicago
A lot of the early German settlers in Crawford County came from eastern PA rather than directly from Germany. A good many of them came from Berks Co. and/or Lehigh Co., after having been in that area for several generations. You might want to look there for your family name or names. WBM: Have you read the history of the MUMFORD family at the Crawford County web site? David MUMFORD had a son James, born in NJ (not NY, but you did have a question mark beside NY). This James was born in 1783 and married Catherine Wright. There is more information in the histories of early Crawford Co., on Mr. Yoset's site, I believe, which is a linked from the Crawford County site. I am descended from the above James' sister, Margaret. Your James may be connected to this family, even if he is not the son of David and Abigail Poole MUMFORD. Sally Price
If Mr. Brakel was a German Lutheran, then Venango Twp. was a logical place to be. Zion Church (a union church - Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed) was established in Venango Twp. quite early in the county's history. Records from this church survive from 1814 to 1871, although some years seem spotty. The original records are on deposit at the Lutheran Archives, Langenheim Library, Thiel College, Greenville, PA. The Crawford Co. Genealogical Society published the baptisms and confirmations in its 1995 journals. Unfortunately, the Brakel name, under any spelling, does not appear in the baptisms, communicants, or confirmations.
