Thank you for the tip. I wonder how I could get a copy of the records? Anyone have a tip on this?
There was a young lady who graduated from Spencer Hospital School of nursing named Gariety. This would have been in the late 1930s or early 1940s. Probably 1939 or 1940. I cannot remember her first name, but she was a friend of my second cousin, Dorothy Hogue. Those records are around somewhere as the school has been closed for some time. The hospital is there, just a part of Meadville Medical Center. Hope this helps, Jean
Thank you for sending the census to me. I do have some census records. I cannot find the Gariepy family on the 1860 census. I know that Frank Gariepy supposedly came to America from Canada (or a ship bound for Canada) in about 1858. Thank you kindly, Michelle

Lavina was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Henry) McClurg, who lived in West Salem Township for many years, and were buried in the old Seceder graveyard in Greenville. Joseph was born in Ireland, and probably married Mary in Westmoreland County. A member of the McClurg family still owns the family home in Ireland, and the line has been carried back a generation or two before Joseph. Mary & Joseph had a large family, named by Joseph in a letter sent to his parents in 1820, before the birth of the youngest child, Daniel. The letter was preserved by the family. Lavina and Hugh Brown were ancestors of Madge Henry and her sister, Janet, who were long time members of the Mercer County Genealogical Society. They had information about Mary Henry's family, too, since they were also descended from another member of the Henry family. I'm do not know if that information is available, since both of the Henry sisters are dead. My husband is a descendant of Joseph & Mary's son, David, who later lived in North Shenango Twp., Crawford Co.
Some members of this family are buried in Rocky Glen Cemetery, I believe.
Have information regarding this family and will be glad to exchange earlier information for information about Elizabeth and her family. Evelyn
Researchers, I have found this addl census info regarding my earlier post: 1850 W. Salem, Mercer Co, PA, fam 1209 Hugh BROWN, 40, PA, farmer Lavina, 34, PA Joseph, 10, PA Sarah, 8, PA Mary, 7, PA (my direct line of research/ aka "Mary Elizabeth") Hugh, 5, PA Lavina, 2, PA Lavina 38, PA Yes, there are three Lavina Brown listings - anyone know who they are and how they are related? And............ 1860 W. Salem, Mercer Co, PA, fam 666 Lavina BROWN, 38, PA, widow Joseph, 20, PA Sarah, 17, PA Elizabeth, 16, PA (aka "Mary Elizabeth") So, Hugh BROWN (b. ca 1810 PA) died between 1850 and 1860? Does anyone know death/burial info for this Hugh Brown? I note that Lavina has aged only four years from 1850 - 1860. I have found addl "Lavina Brown" listings in 1870 but they dont seem to fit the above family. Does anyone have 1870 census info for the 1850 and 1860 BROWN family noted above? Mary Elizabeth BROWN married John GAMBLE. I have no census info for either Mary or John in 1870; but they can be found in 1880 West Fallowfield, Crawford Co, PA, ED 99. Please forgive me if you receive this query twice - I would appreciate any help. Thanks, Sharon

Fr'ghysen St. John, Wounded at Fredericksburg, Va., Dec. 13, 1862--dropped from rolls, Oct. 31, 1861 [sic] On September 2, 1862, 101 Crawford County men (see http://petelois.home.mindspring.con/) were mustered into service and formed Company H of the 145th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regilment. Ravished by disease for 3 1/2 months, only 63 would answer roll call on December 12, 1862, the day before the Battle of Fredericksburg. On December 14, 1862, only 14 members of the company answered roll call. In Fredericksburg, Virginia, we recognize this battle, not by which side won and which side lost, but by paying tribute to one Sergt. Richard Kirkland, also known as the "Angel of Marye's Heights." During brief lulls in the battle, Sergt. Kirkland could hear the cries of the wounded and dying Union soldiers who lay in the firild below hjis position on Marye's Heights. Without permission from his sluperiors, he began carrying canteens of whater across the stone wall which protected his position and minister to the wounded. This feat of both heroism and humanisim was immidiately recognied, as the exchange of fire stopped when Sergt. Kirkland was in the fiield. Having been to the site of this battle and having spoken to historians of this battle, it is possible that members of Company H could have been among those who received water from Sergt. Kirkland. I invite you to visit http://petelois.home.mindspring.com/ where you will find the roster of the 101 Crawford County men of Company H, and the biography of Cyrus Wilson.
