Hi Mary and Todd, Todd is close on the company's locations. The Meadville Malleable Iron Co. was west of French Creek between the B&LE RR tracks and Pennsylvania Ave (that is, in Kerrtown) and just across the tracks from the sewage treatment plant. Westinghouse, later Sunbeam, was east of French Creek between the B&LE RR tracks and the Erie RR tracks and on the south side of Mercer St. I worked there during the early 50's. Both are shown on the 1954 City Engineer's map I have, latest revision Feb, 1968. Meadville had more foundries in 1910 and your ancestor could have worked in any of the others, including the Erie RR shops. It sounds like the employer name is subject to interpretation. Ever onward and backward, Dale
Mary, A one time there was a company "Meadville Malleable Iron" ie 1940s. If I remember correctly the property became the "Westinghouse Furnace Division" which shut down c1956 and was taken over by Sunbeam about the time I left Crawford Co in 1958. Listers, I found an ancestor on the 1910 census for Meadville. His occupation was listed as "moulder" and the employer was "iron" works or "gun" works. Is anyone familiar with companies that might have been considered as iron works in that time frame? Or perhaps a gun manufacturer? Appreciate any responses. Mary
If you can find a directory for that time frame, you should find it, or perhaps several qualifiers, there. And also your relative, listed at his residence. Here is the transcription of Wright Sheldon's biography from the 1885 Crawford County History. I find it interesting that there is mention that Wright Sheldon underwent cataract surgery in the 1880s. Being an optometrist, I can only imagine what his cataract surgery and recovery must have been like without the medications and surgical techniques that are available today. Bob Wheatall 1885 Crawford County History Pages: 1043-1044 Wright Sheldon, farmer, P. O. Springboro, was born in Addison County, Vt., January 15, 1806, son of Arad and Jerusha Sheldon, native of Connecticut, who came to this township in January, 1832. Their family numbered ten children, five now living. They were members of the Baptist denomination, of which church at Springboro, Mrs. Sheldon was an original member. He died in 1868 and his widow followed him in 1870. Our subject who is third in the family, came to this county with his wife and one child in March, 1832. He was married July 1, 1824, and reared eight children, seven of whom are now living. Their son Arad was a soldier for three years during the late war, in the One Hundred and Eleventh Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He contracted a disease, through hardships undergone, which caused his death in the fall of 1868. The names of those living are Patience, Samuel W. Levi, Eli M. ( was in the army nine months), Theodore, Phoebe (wife of R. C. Sloan), and Judson. Mr. And Mrs. Sheldon, two sons and one daughter are members of the Baptist Church at Springboro. Our subject is owner of 150 acres of well improved land. He was almost blind for nearly two years, owing to cataracts in both eyes, but by proper treatment has greatly recovered his eyesight. In politics he is a Democrat. _________________________________________________________________ Check out the great features of the new MSN 9 Dial-up, with the MSN Dial-up Accelerator. http://click.atdmt.com/AVE/go/onm00200361ave/direct/01/

Jan, that was an excellent service you did for someone. I have Shafer's in the area but none of those names rang a bell! Jean GBA
Hi all, This is from a newspaper clipping, don't know what paper or date, probably the Erie, PA Times, recently, that was sent to me by someone who thought it might be mine - because I have family in this area. However my people in this area are not FRANKs and I don't relate to these so I am passing it on to the FRANK list and the CRAWFORD and VENANGO county lists. I do not know anything more than what is here: FRANK Addie LaDora MYERS FRANK, age 86, died Wednesday, January 24, 2004, in Venango, PA. Born on March 13, 1917, daughter of the late Maurice SHAFER and Edith M. OSBORN SHAFER. Wife of the late Harry Floyd MYERS and Robert A. FRANK. Mother of Edith HALL and her husband Robert of Corry; Lynda THERASSE and her husband John of Venango, PA, Ralph MYERS and his wife, Darla, of Edinboro; Dennis MYERS of Waterford. Mother of the late Paul T. MYERS and Frederick F. MYERS. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and many greatgrandchildren. Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 and are invited to attend funeral services there on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Venango Cemetery. He came to Allen Co, OH and married Sarah Lippincott on March 28, 1839. He is my great great great grandfather. No one has been able to go further than this with the Swaney side of our family. He died between 1850 and 1860. We can not find out when exactly or where he is buried. We are working on this. There aren't any family members left who even knew about him. I'd appreciate any help. I saw someone had posted something about John Swaney Jr. who was born around the same time as James, and lived in Crawford Co.
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Mr. S.K. STELLE of Venango, Crawford Co., Pennsylvania. The photograph was taken at the Langhorne Studio in Plainfield, NJ probably in the 1890's with Mr. STELLE appearing to be in his 30's at the time. An additional photograph obtained from the same source including the same handwriting is of Mrs. M.T. FREEMAN of Crossingsville, Crawford Co., PA. The two could be related, maybe brother and sister, though I don't know for certain. I'm hoping to locate someone from this STELLE Family so that the photograph can be returned to family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
The Sons of the American Revolution have started including pictures of Tombstones of Rev War Patriots and/or their spouses in the latest edition of their SAR Patriot Index CD. If any of you are taking pictures in cemeteries and run across a Rev War grave we would appreciate a picture of it for inclusion in the next edition of the SAR Patriot Index. There are only a few requirements: 1) We need the name and location of the cemetery 2) We need a transcript of the tombstone unless it is clearly legible in the picture 3) If you e-mail the picture as an attachment send it to PatriotIndex@cfl.rr.com - NOT this list 4) Individual pictures should be scanned to produce a file in the 300,000 to 500,000 byte range or if your using a digital camera set it to produce a picture in whatever the "Medium" setting is for your camera(i.e. we want as large a picture as possible to be able to read the stone) You can read more about this at http://www.sar.org/pat_idx/ TIA for all help Doug Little Chairman, NSSAR Patriot Index Committee __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Correction, Lavilla was married to "Perry Shontz". I so, that explains the family relationship to the Vickers Family. My grandfather was hard of hearing from age 12, thus he did not always have his facts straight. There is a marriage announcement for Lavilla A. Frame, daug. of Abner and Susanna, 1 Jan. 1877, to Perry Shontz, son of Samuel and Mary Meyler Schontz (Meadville Evening-Republican, 6 Jan. 1877).
