I believe everyone who wants to should pay the $15 a year, or $5 each time. I simply don't want to. My way of supporting the Society was by donating my books, as each was published. I won't be doing that any more, either. Those of you who wish to may certainly pay any fee you choose. I was just pointing out that it will be an ever dwindling number, which seems to be the exact opposite of what the Society should be doing. Simple economics teaches us that a rise in cost will result in a decrease in demand. A dramatic rise in cost will see a correspondingly dramatic decrease in demand. Even when it was FREE, the Society was hardly overwhelmed with patrons. I was just expressing my opinion that the Society will fail soon. By their logic, if the number of patrons decreases by 50% due to the new charges, they would have to RAISE the fee in order to compensate. No business that ever tried that theory is still IN business. I still wish them well, as I do to those of you who will continue to patronize them. I will just not be one of them. And I personally saw other people walk out without paying, so I know I am not alone. And that was just one day.... If you had been reading these emails last year, you would know that the historical society was forced out of the library. I don't believe that anyone who owns a computer can't come up with $15 a year. Pardon my soap box for a minute. I have in the past and currently belong to a number of organization(s) that provide quite a bit of service for free to many people that have fallen on hard times or simply can not afford much.. I'm not trying to criticize an organization of dedicated volunteers, but being a dedicated volunteer I personally would have a hard time imposing a fee because poor planning, decision making, or over an emotionally charged issue. I feel that if you make a decision, because you do not like your surroundings or how things are handled, it should not be up to the rest of us to pay for that decision. Not everyone has the where with all to pay. I originally sent out an email to try to find out what people think and also to see if anyone could put the situation into proper perspective. In light of the absence of this information it seems what your saying is that this information should be for those fortunate enough to be able to afford this fee no matter how it was arrived at. Also Erie, Just up the road from Meadville ( 45 miles north on I 90) has a Historical Society with a free library, the only fee is 0.30 cents per photocopy. How can they obtain this level of service, for free, such a short distance away and Crawford County Historical can not? It still comes down to this for me, are we being charged for poor decisions? Back in October the Historical Society Library was located in the Meadville Public Library ( info from this list October 2003). Why the move? Did the Library need more room? What was the issue for the Move? I do not mind paying the $5 for supporting any program, I also pay for my own mistakes and I'm not looking for a free ride. I also pay taxes, like everyone else, some of the tax money is returned in the form of grants for programs like this. I believe I read a while ago Crawford County Historical received some of these funds. What is really going on? I do not see anything wrong with charghing a fee to people who walk in the door for research, but I do think there needs to be a research room with chairs and tables at least... that standing up to do it all is prohibitive to some elderly or infirm researchers... As far as a sign goes, maybe that's why they are charging money, to have enough to use for those kinds of things. We were all gung- ho for the Hist soc library just a short time ago, so I say we need to have a little patience while they get going. I do agree that if they are charging money I would hope the results will soon be seen by the public. I have been seriously thinking of donating materials to them, but I think I must wait on that also.... g ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! I am extremely grateful for all the help I have received from the Crawford County Historical Society. I belong to several other societies and all cost much more and none have been more pleasant and helpful than the volunteers and staff in Crawford County. I am looking forward to another trip back this summer where I can continue to search the tax records that have revealed so much about my ancestors. Although I will renew my membership I would not be at all upset if there were an increase in membership fees to support the organization. I have not used any historical societies libraries where there was no fee for nonmembers. Val Zerambo Reading, PA

Seems to me that the $15 annual fee is really cheap. My only suggestion is that when someone comes through the door, they should give the visitor a choice--$5 per visit or the annual membership at $15. Perhaps the problem is that they aren't communicating that choice. Is th e membership considered a donation that is tax-deductable? If so, they should mention that. Secondly, having the materials in a very user-friendly environment, with chairs, etc, seems like it would be a first priority. Surely they can find a means of providing a couple more chairs and a flat spot to work with a small budget. Or is the space too cramped? I hope not. Sounds like too many people are looking for a free ride. The most you have to pay is $15 a year. Even one visit would be worth that to me. Instead of criticizing an organization of dedicated volunteers, how about giving them some financial and moral support for all the good work they do? I agree with Rob Walton that the information available is well worth the fee. The newspaper abstracts and index are sources not to be found anywhere else, and have provided many clues for me. The cemetery records save a lot of hunting too. The move to the new HQ did not allow a lot of planning, so it will take the volunteers and staff some time to have everything in shape. I have no doubt that more equipment, furniture, etc. is on their wish list. I think it is about time some of us who make extensive use of the library also take some responsibility for keeping it in place. If it means a small fee for use, then so be it. Evelyn
I plan to visit the Crawford county Historical Society in September of this year and would gladly pay a $15 fee for the opportunity to search records that are unavailable otherwise. A new building needs support and genealogy cannot survive without finical support. There is a $15 yearly membership fee though. I do not know if that is new, increased, or remains the same. A $5.00 entrance fee, up from ZERO last year, seems like a steep increase though. I think they will turn away more people (like myself) who may never return. During my time there on Friday, it was clear that not one person coming in was aware of the new fee, and some simply walked out without paying. ----- Original Message ----- From: <BJHErie@aol.com> To: <PACRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 23, 2004 7:31 PM Subject: Re: [PACRAWFO] NEW FEES - Crawford County Historical Society > Hi > Are they charging a $5.00 admission fee to the members of the Crawf Co. I have to say that everytime I have been at the Historical Society, the information that I was able to research was definately worth $5. I agree with you Rob. I have never been able to go to Crawford County PA and I am a $15 dollar a year member too. Hi Jeff: Thanks for the info. I am a member but was soon to be an ex-member if they were going to charge me an admission fee. Bev
No fees to members. Hi Are they charging a $5.00 admission fee to the members of the Crawf Co. Hist. Society? If this is the case, I guess I too will be doing my research someplace else! Bev in Erie
