I feel that the material was donated to the Historical Soc.- that they should pay for it. All this stuff was donated, at least most of it. Including the building. now we all have to pay for the material that was donated to that society.. Its a shame it has to be boiled down to money again. ----- Original Message ----- From: "J. Dave, I agree...I think, but I would not refer to the CCHS as a "business". The CCHS is a non-profit volunteer organization providing a very unique service to the community both locally and afar. I'm not sure why people expect to get something for free. Wake up folks...it's 2004! We were all very lucky that the Crawford County Library system sheltered them from normal operating costs for so long. Things change and we all need to adjust. Also, to the person who made reference to the Erie Blascoe libary; your example is at the sake of others in the community. Yes, the research room in the Blascoe libary is free to use for genealogical research, but at what cost to the citizens in Erie County? A majority of the county resources go into supporting the Blascoe library (and its free reseach room) while bunches of local libraries in Erie county are closing. Now families have to drive (gas $$ and time) all the way to downtown Erie in order to have access to a library. So where is the fairness to those people? Bottom line is if someone doesn't want to pay then don't, but stop acting like someone owes you something for FREE. My goodness all this back and forth about $15.00 for a year¹s worth of research- imagine if the historical society wasn¹t there at all. Some much more would be lost. I¹m on the mailing list as I do a family research project so I¹ve been reading this flurry of email. I live in NYC and the information and general help from this organization and people who volunteer has been very generous. No one has yet asked for a fee to do basic research and I have been asking for real digging. There is also a wonderfully rich web site which costs money and skill to maintain yet no one has asked that I pay for that service. Small not for profit organizations usually exist in addition to our taxes. The fact that information is cared for and archived for future generations is an extremely generous motive. It requires labor and expertise to house and archive historical information. I would like my daughter to go there in twenty years and be able to find out the stories and facts about her great great grandparents as I have done. It is invaluable. I agree that this list is for genealogy and ancestors research. I am one of the volunteers at the Historical society and the move as been very time consuming for all of us. We could have made the decision to stay closed for a longer period of time, but decided to open and have longer hours for more access to the information, and I am one of them who has made the additional hours possible. Lets get behind that Historical Society in there efforts and all will benefit. We have a nice facility where we can make additional information available to the public, that was not available before. The volunteers have done as much as they can at this time to accomodate the public as we are still in the process of organizing and finishing our unpacking from the move. Good Luck to all who are researching in Crawford Co and I hope all continue to support our effort. First, the HS did not want to move from the second floor of the public library, and did not do so by choice. The library wanted to expand, and basically told us to find another facility. After lengthy negotiaitons, and through the generosity of the Barco/Duratz family, we were able to relocate to the new building. The layout is different, and it does not appear as spacious as the old facility, but we are happy to be in a modern building at a central location in town, roughly two blocks from the court house, with some off-street parking, which we did not have in the past. Contrary to what as been mentioned, we do have furniture. There are tables and chairs, shelves, and more on order, if I remember correctly. I cannot imagine why anyone had to stand for two hours, and I am sure the staff would have found seating for the visitor, had they known. I know that many of the major genealogical/historical societies charge entrance fees. Western Reserve HS has been doing this for years, and charges substantially more. Our $5.00 fee is about the price of two cups of coffee at some fancy coffee shop, I think. The decision to charge an entrance fee was discussed at length. It did not come about because of "poor planning, decision making, or over an emotionally charged issue." The HS gets no public funding. We still have to pay for utilities, maintenance, supplies, etc., etc., and a small entrance fee is one of the few ways we have to cover those costs. We do pursue and obtain grants, but these are usually for specific things - evaluation of the railroad collection, for example, or publication of a specific book. The grants do not cover daily operating expenses. We do have some local fundraising events, but out-of-town researchers would most likely not be involved in those. I am sorry that someone was startled and offended by the change, and I agree that the fee should be clearly posted at the door. Otherwise, unfounded insinuations about the HS, its planning, organization, motivation, etc., do not really offer any positive input. I believe that I will end with the following. Thanks to all I've enjoyed the discussion. I do not believe that I made any insinuations. If so please point them out. I was asking questions and did not intend to insinuate. It seems ambiguous to say the Library wanted to expand so we had to go. If the Library was going to expand there would be more room added on correct?, or am I missing what an expansion is? Or were they expanding room by the removal of the HS? Would not most libraries appreciate having this type of information for their patrons? The Albion Pa library has just accepted a large donation of Genealogy data. I'm not positive but I believe they even put it in the local rag. How can you say HS did not do so by choice and then go on to quote that there was no " emotionally charged issue". Being asked to leave when it was not by choice did not evoke any emotions? After what you have explained it seems to me that some one would have been upset. No poor planning? It is obvious that there was no contingency plan. Let me understand this correctly, you have access to a facility with free rent and it never crossed anybody's mind that this gift would one day end? If the HS was paying rent I couldn't imagine that the Library would rid itself of funding. Currently most libraries seem to be screaming for funding. You go on to mention that large Historical Societies have cover charges, that's great. But they are also dealing with a larger scale operation. There was no comment on how Erie HS could run their operation with out a cover charge, I'm sure their organization is close to the same scale as Crawford County HS,this seemed to be conveniently omitted. I have done some grant writing and you can have daily operating expenses covered with some grants, you can ask for anything in a grant, it is how the subject is approached. I believe the same can be said with public funding. Also, there was a lot of positive input that was generated by the many emails over this issue. If you are a member of the Historical Society you have just received a number of opinions of potential customers, for free. This should be quite valuable. Maybe we should thank Jeff and everyone else that chimed in on the discussion for their opinion. You now have some idea how people feel Is the glass half empty or half full? Note to Jeffrey Blystone: Just wonder if you would explain WHY you had to stand for two hours? Was it due to lack of seating space, or rules regarding use of files, or what?
I've stayed out of this discussion, but that last comment was insensitive. I have a computer that I bought several years ago - not the fastest, but serviceable. I was laid off from my job after coming back from surgery a year ago and haven't been able to find another job, my husband is disabled, and we're to the point of choosing between food, medications, and gas for the car. I stay on the genealogy lists for enjoyment and research, not to hear a bunch of whining and sniping. Certainly not for condescending remarks about people's financial status. Please stop this argument and get back to ancestors.
I think we've exhausted the subject of the Crawford County Historical Society. Please, no more discussion. Let's get back to finding our ancestors. Teri List Admin
Hello, I have been watching all the e-mails about this subject and I don't know if it will help or even change anyones minds, but it seems to me instead of asking for a $5.00 entrance fee, I think it would have been better if they just asked for donations instead. I do agree what information they have is well worth the $5.00 entrance fee however, I am a strong believer in keeping genealogy free. I also wonder what right they have to charge for accessing this public information? Am I missing the mark or do they have to pay for the volunteers? It seems to me volunteers help organize and produce this information, and then the Historical Society wants to charge it's patrons, seems to me they are just trying to make a fast buck off of their decision to move, and how fair is it to the volunteers to donate their time and hard work, not to mention the researchers who have donated their material as well, while the Historical Society reaps the financial benefits? Just somethings to think about I guess. My two cents worth...... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rick Polaski" <r.polaski@att.net> To: <PACRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 24, 2004 5:50 PM Subject: Re: Fw: [PACRAWFO] NEW FEES - Crawford County Historical Society > > Pardon my soap box for a minute. > > I have in the past and currently belong to a number of organization(s) that > provide quite a bit > of service for free to many people that have fallen on hard times or simply > can not afford much.. Just for the record, I volunteer every Monday at the Clay County Archives in Liberty, Missouri. We receive free rent from the city for the use of a former library but have to pay for all utilities. Our fee for use of the facilities is $5.00 a day or $15.00 for a years membership. Of course, copy work is additional. Most visitors seem to understand when we tell them we have to pay for all the utilities. And of course, there is always someone at the Archives to give help and assistance to our visitors.
