    3. Linda, If you get a chance to go to the Columbia County Historical Society in Bloomsburg ask for a cemetery map. I got one last summer and it has been very helpful for me. My husband knows Columbia county but he is not always around to ask. There hours are posted on the Columbia county pagenweb site. I need to ask if there is a map like this for Montour county. Have a wonderful trip. The court house in Sunbury is very dusty, dirty. Twenty-five years ago I got to help with some microfilming the LDS church was doing. It was very interesting to me. Little did I know some of those were records I would need to search for! Are you going to go to the Bloomsburg Fair? 1. STROUP, WEISER, BOMBOY, BAUER, ANDES, WEISE
    2. Doug and Linda
    3. Hello again! Briefly, here are the lines I'm researching in Columbia County. Philip A. STROUP/STRAUB was born 1835 in Schuylkill County, PA. His mother's name was Catharine and his father's was possibly Jonathan (died around 1845?). I believe they moved to Mt. Pleasant Twp around 1840. Philip's siblings were Elizabeth (b 1830), Jacob (b 1832), Mary (b 1837), Christiann (b 1839), David (b 1841), and Jonathan (b 1844). Philip married Julia Ann WEISER in 1860. Julia was born in 1829 but I know nothing else about her before her marriage. They lived briefly in Mt. Pleasant Twp then moved to Hemlock Twp where they lived until Julia's death in 1898. Philip moved to Berwick shortly after that and died there in 1914. Philip and Julia had the following children: Anna Rebecca (b 1863), Mary (b 1864), Amelia (b 1866), David (b 1867), and William Herve (b 1870). Jacob BOMBOY was born 1787 in Rockland Twp, Berks, PA. In 1808 he married Elizabeth A. BAUER who was born 1790 in Bloomsburg. They lived in various places in Columbia County including Hemlock Twp, Centre Twp, and Mifflinville. They had at least 10 children and the oldest was Justina Christina Chesty who was born in 1809 somewhere in Columbia County. Justina married Joseph WEISE (born 1805 in Columbia County) in 1830 in Centre Twp. They also lived in at least Madison Twp and Hemlock Twp. They had 10 children - the ninth was Angelina Elizabeth born in 1846 of Centre Twp. Angelina married Jacob ANDES (born 1840 in Germany) in Columbia County in 1864. They lived mostly in Hemlock Twp. They had 8 children - the fourth was Phoebe Johnston who was born in 1873 in Buckhorn. She married William Herve STROUP in 1891 in Espy. William Herve and Phoebe had 6 children and moved to Phelps County, Nebraska around 1903 and then shortly after that moved to Gregory County, South Dakota. Do any of these names ring a bell with anyone? Sincerely, Linda Allen dallen3@isd.net

I'm going to making a trip to Columbia county in the very near future to do some genealogical research. <Snip> I'm looking for any guidance about <Snip> the different repositories I'll be visiting. My time will be somewhat limited <Snip> . . . < Linda . . . A couple of comments from one who's researched that area for 25 years. The state library? I'm assuming you mean the library/archives at Bloomsburg State College. Excellent source but don't pass up the Bloomsburg Public Library either. They have cemetery records, etc. Maybe sks who lives there can give you the hours to these places; very important when trying to stretch time. I remember hitting the libraries in the evenings. Also, since I don't know what area history you know, keep in mind county changes. My family spanned three. They settled on Montours Ridge near Danville in Northumberland County in the early 1770's. The area around Danville & Bloomsburg changed several times. Until 1815 -- Bloomsburg, Danville, etc and what is now Columbia & Montour Counties were in Northumberland. County seat is Sunbury, just across the Susquehanna. Their library and courthouse are excellent, expecially if you can get into the basement vaults of Deeds, Wills and the County Commissioners. The last especially, has all the old assesment books for land and occupation plus the books on Unseated Lands (aka: proprietary land warrants) for the area. Many of their old records, however, were never filed and remain mixed in boxes on the vault shelves. If you don't find an estate file, that's probably where you need to dig. And I mean dig; dress for dirt and take something to clean your hands. The NU County Historical Society is another good place in Sunbury and worth a stop. After 1815 -- Columbia was formed from Northumberland with Danville as the first County seat which later moved to Bloomsburg. Their courthouse and records are impressive; very well organized. I only had time for Deeds since I found such a goldmine in Northumberland. In 1850 -- Montour split off and re-established a County seat in Danville. Several border townships had pieces that went back and forth. The Thomas Beaver Library has microfilm of old local newspapers. At the courthouse, the Prothonatary's office has Delayed Birth Certificates; very useful. Their historical society is in Genl Wm Montgomery's home at the head of Mill Street. Hope this helps a little. If you have specific questions, I'll try to answer. Kathleen W-F mailto:woodside1728@uswest.net

    3. Hi, Listers . . . I subscribe to a free daily email service called EVERTON'S FAMILY HISTORY NEWSLINE Sponsored by: The Genealogical Helper. To subscribe: http://www.everton.com/subscribe I get short but informative article on a different topic of genealogical research each day. Thursday's really took me by surprise! I'd never heard of this and can't say I've ever heard anyone discuss it either so I wanted to share it. Have you ever thought of searching Appellate Court Records? Nor had I! Seems they are printed and arranged chronologically by court, with alphabetic indexes to the parties involved. These records are typically found in legal libraries of law schools, large legal firms, and state governments. Has anyone in your family ever contested a will? Well, this is where that wealth of information will be found. I understand a lot more of these are going online, too. Here are some links to explore further; the last a link to Everton for reprints. 1. Grave stone
    2. Alice Kern
    3. Found this in today's paper, The Press Enterprise Whose stone? By MICHAEL T. BURKHART Press Enterprise Writer CLEVELAND TWP. -- Ignatius Oswald has been dead for 70 years, but something of his showed up this spring in a local police department's lost and found box. Oswald's marble gravestone was discovered along a back road, and police are trying to find where the man is buried so the marker can be returned to its rightful place. The white stone marker, bearing Oswald's name and date of death, was found in May by an unknown individual along Happy Hollow Road between Knoebels Amusement park and Bear Gap, police said. It was turned it over to Ralpho Township police, who gave it to the Locust Township force, said Cpl. Allen Breach. The marker has remained at the police station since its discovery. Despite advertisements in area newspapers, no one has come forward to claim Oswald's marker. The rectangular gravestone is described as 16 inches long by eight inches high and wide, police said. Oswald's date of death -- Aug. 9, 1928 -- is clearly visible, although a symbol to the left of the stone's face with the letters F.O.A. inscribed underneath is indiscernible. As far as lost property goes, Breach said the white marker is one of the strangest things he's seen cross through the police department. He said he has no theories about where the marker belongs or where it could have come from. No reports of area graveyard vandalism were received at the time the marker was found in early May, he said. Police contacted the Roaring Creek and Catawissa Valley Historic Study Group to see if members could unearth any information about the stone's resting place, said Wayne Petro, president of the group. The group said it would help police ask around for information. Anyone who knows about Oswald is asked to call Locust Township police at 799-5806.

    1. Correction to "The Brobst Chronicles"
    2. Bill Brobst
    3. A sharp-eyed reader, Patrick Dwyer, found an error in The Brobst Chronicles which those of you who have a copy (hundreds of them out there) may wish to correct. In Chapter VIII, under "Intermarrriages", in the fifth paragraph, last sentence, it states: "His brother, "Jurg" Probst (1742), first married the oldest of the Stambach girls, Anna Catharina (1746), and later married her younger sister, Anna Maria (1764)." That sentence was written nearly five years ago, when I had relied on a report which I have since found to be in error. But I never corrected the text in the book to reflect the newer finding. His second wife wasn't Anna Maria Stambach, but Anna Maria Derr, daughter of Melchior Derr. If you have a copy of this, please delete the second part of that sentence, beginning with "and later married....." Thank you, Patrick, a sharp-eyed reader indeed! My apologies for the error.
